Mason v. Rock
After watching the first preseason game Mason looked much better then Rock. This has been the story for the past two preseasons. If the redskins only go with 3 backs on the open day roster does Mason have a shot given all the extras that Rock brings to the team? Thoughts?
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
I wish we could keep Mason, but Rock plays a specific and valuable role on special teams therefore making it almost impossible for Mason to make the team instead of Rock.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
I don't think they keep 4 RB's either. It's too bad because Mason appears to be a better fit for the running game that we run in DC. Could Betts possibly be on the way out? I've read on this site that he might be in jeopardy of getting cut.

Re: Mason v. Rock
trade betts 4 a few picks to get back what we spent on taylor.
keep mason & rock. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
trade betts 4 a few picks to get back what we spent on taylor.
keep mason & rock.
Not a bad idea! I would stock piling a few draft picks for him. However, if we were going to do that we should've done it after his 1000 yard season. His value coming off last season is low. Plus, if CP gets hurt, I am much more comfortable with Ladell back there. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
i'm not that big a fan of Betts... so i'm a little bias i guess but i like the idea of trading him for a few picks.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
we have no idea how mason would do against actual starters in a regular season game. betts is proven in this league, mason is not. he had a good pre-season game, we should not jump to conclusions over one pre-season game. if portis were to go down, i would be extremely uncomfortable handing the run game over to someone who has no regular season experience and someone who hasnt run the ball in years in rock.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
It's tough to trade Betts because he has proven to be a valuable back up in the past. However, the skins do have to ask themselves if they are willing to carry 4 RB's, cut Mason, cut Rock, or try and make a trade to an RB needy team. I don't think they can keep mason on the practice squad this year. The only way they do that is if they cut Devine...which I am all for! We don't need him as a 4th qb.

The way I worked it out we could easily carry 4 RB's on the roster (keep in mind I don't know how the ST units are put together outside of the K, P, and LS) but it's definately possible. Re: Mason v. Rock
I love Mason's speed and slitherin style, I hope they keep both. This battle will last throught out the exhibiton season, if Mason shows this on a consistent basis then find a place for him, make a roster spot.

Re: Mason v. Rock
good question. I think because rock brings a good kick return, and great st'er overall, he'll take up any questionable roster spot. mason has shined every time he's had a shot, though. I think he may have a chance to be a great backup, and if we had someone that could return kicks and cover like rock, it may be considered.
trading betts... i don't know if we could get enough value for him. he's a good running back, but i don't know if anyone would give up a second for him... |
Re: Mason v. Rock
speaking of betts what is up with the linebacker Alfred Fincher having the same #46 as betts?

No, he was definitely wearing 46. |

They don't have enough numbers so some players have to share because we haven't made our cuts yet. Mason looked good last night. But Rock just can contribute more to the team. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
Mason has to step it up on special teams.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
Ive been an advocate for trading Betts since he did well when Portis went down. I like Betts, but we have Rock and Mason. This year, someone will take Mason if we practice squad him.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
That's very true.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
Unless I'm mistaken, practice squad guys are safe from other teams. I know you can't go on the practice squad after your second year though.
The ideal time to trade Betts would have been immediately after the 2006 season when he was steamrolling everybody. I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of parting with Betts for a couple of picks, but one of them would have to be a 2nd rounder at minimum. Betts fumbles too much for my tastes. Besides, serviceable spot duty-type running backs grow like weeds in this league. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
Mason is fine and all but is it really a big deal if someone scoops him up off the PS? Our RB tandem of Portis and Betts is more than satisfactory and should be that way for 3 or 4 more years. By that time, I would hope that another running back of Mason's skill level would be available either through FA or the draft in the next couple of years. We currently have a solid running game and a solid return game. Take away Rock and we still have a solid running game but now our return game becomes....questionable. I say keep Rock and let Mason sit on the practice squad, even if it means another team knows more about him than we do and grabs him. The Redskins future is not in jeopardy if Mason is not part of the team these next 3 years.

Haven't seen much of a blocking roll for Mason, although he ran his ass off last night. But have seen plenty from Rock over time, I think clearly that would be Rock. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
From Wikipedia:
Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on their "practice squad" in addition to their 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons. Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week; however they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: the minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 is $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[1] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000. (Some practice squad players are paid considerably more, however: in 2006, the New England Patriots paid third-year player Billy Yates the full $425,000 he would have earned on the active roster.)[2]They are also ineligible for many fringe benefits such as service time, pensions, and the like. They hope to be promoted to the active roster either by their current team, or by another team who is scouting them. They retain free agent status and may sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team. |

Re: Mason v. Rock
also, There is no way we go into the season with one backup Offensive Tackle.
I know. I accounted for the fact that Fabini played tackle for most of his career as well as the fact that the team is currently giving Rhinehart reps at T. Zorn indicated that Rinehart could "be a factor" this year because of his versatility. He could back up at both guard and tackle positions. "I wish we could keep at one position," Zorn said. "For a rookie to come in and play both positions and do decently, we're pretty excited about that." So with that you have 5 possible tackles dressing up on gameday. 4 Guards and 1.5 Centers which is why you have Crummey on the practice squad. My predictions might not be the most accurate but they do have some substance to them :D |

I'm biased... my cousin is good friends with him from Prep. However, I DO think he is awesome and deserves a shot. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
I don't see Mason beating out Rock. The only way I see Mason making the team is if someone in front of him gets hurt.
By the way PS players can be signed away from other teams as long as they are signed to that team's active roster. |

Nemo can't be on the practice squad anymore since this is his third year. I think they'll also need one more fullback behind Sellers. That makes Mason the odd man out.
Sure about that? I haven't looked at all the position scenarios, but I've thought all along that they might make it work to keep 6 wr's for 3 reasons: 1) injuries; we're already seeing the hamstring problems & it's a position that has frequent injury problems & has been in the past (Moss) 2) Both Mix & Thrash play spec teams & play it well. Don't know if they'd have the #4 wr play teams, but that would make it even more feasible to keep 6. 3) Solid Depth; the potential of all these wideouts combined w/Thrash's value to the team might allow them to keep 6. Zorn is an offensive guy too. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
Mason was solid but keep in mind he broke a few long runs late in the game when the super scrubs were in. I thought Rock ran well too but the holes just weren't there at times. That's what happens when you're juggling guys in and out on the OL.
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
Mason is good enough to keep on the roster, no doubt.
They need to find a way to keep him. Perhaps they should have him trying to return kicks or punts or something. Keep in mind that Mason did very well with the draws that Zorn was calling...he is quicker than Rock for our new offense. Rock is old school Gibbs....yes he's decent, but Mason fits the scheme better...kinda like a poor man's westbrook.... If he catches well...something we don't know yet....he could actually be a viable 3rd and long back...I just don't see Rock in that situation. Rock cannot be cut...he is a must keep with special teams and a key team player...kinda like a Thrash...only younger...so that means to keep Mason, he must be able to play teams.... It is entirely possible if Mason returns kicks well with Rock, that may eliminate the need for Thrash....I'd keep my eye on this |
Re: Mason v. Rock
if Mix shows anything, Thrash is gone. i dont understand all the man love for him. and , barring injury, Mason is gone too. just cant beat out Cartwright. but i am not saying Mason cant play in this league. i thought he ran well
|
Re: Mason v. Rock
Competition is good. Mason looks like a better runner, especially for this scheme. Rock has proven himself as a standout special teams player. This is going to be a tough choice the Redskins staff. Lets just see how it plays out the next four weeks. Injuries seems to solve these problems.
In regard to the battle for punter, I think Brooks is already the winner. The kid can boom them. I don't care if he cannot hold for the place kicker, that's what backup quarterbacks are for. Having a backup quarterback as holder opens up fake kicks. |
Re: Mason v. Rock
There is no way you take CP out on third and long . . . so Mason is no help there.
We kept Rock for a reason, he is our ST. I like Betts alright, but two years ago anyone could have been running through the holes our OL was creating. If we could get anything of value for him Id be all for it, but I doubt we would. So Mason really is overkill. I love the way the guy runs, but we really dont NEED him, he would just be a luxury. Hopefully we can keep him for another season on PS and see what to do from there. P.S. Thrash gets love because he has been a fairly consistent possession receiver in the NFC East for several years. No he is not a Super Star but he makes the clutch catches often. |
