Passing The Ball!
I know that our running game has not changed from last season but why the hell are we running more than we are throwing since the passing game is new for us. If you watch Minnesota in the preseason and they are basically just passing on every down to provide some confidence for their quarterback Jackson since they know they can run the ball. I just don't understand Jim's reasoning but I believe he knows what he is doing. This west coast offense is not easy to learn which is why we need all of the practice we can get in the preseason for our receivers to get accustomed to. What do you guys think?

Re: Passing The Ball!
Each week they make a list of things to work on. Maybe the running game, and the types of passing routes they are running this week is what was on this week's list.

Re: Passing The Ball!
You cant just throw it all the time, even if you can run the ball. You still have to throw some runs in there to keep your Rbs going. You dont want to be like the patriots were the continously throw the ball, and when they tried to run they didnt to all to well. While everyone would love to throw everyone down, you have to run to mix it up and keep the deffense honest

Re: Passing The Ball!
I agree with you. I really didn't like Zorn's playcalling at all tonight.
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
In real games in starting in September I agree that we need to run the ball and pass it to to become a balanced team. In the preseason you are supposed to be working on things like I don't know a "NEW OFFENSE". The running game is the same but the passing game is new so we need to find a rhythm before the season starts. This is starting to remind me of Saunders/Gibbs preseason of not showing everything and using only 2% of the playbook. We need to practice this offense in the preseason to become more efficient for the regular season.
I agree with you. I really didn't like Zorn's playcalling at all tonight.
I like that he is willing to go after what he is being given by the D! Play calling wasn't that bad but for a droped pass here and there, missed block and a QB[Collins] that is having a hard time getting to know Coach Z's O didn't help. As the season gets going and Portis,Cooley, Moss,El and other WR's get in there I really think this O is going to fly! Coach is going to hit anyone any where and as much as I love Gibbs this isn't our fathers O! In any given game the run is going to be working and others the pass because D's come in and try to take away what you do best. Believe me come september they will be up in the box to stop the run and Portis untill Campbell and coach Z makes them think other wise!

Re: Passing The Ball!
We had 22 rushes on the night vs. 34 passes. What's so crazy about that???
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
Very poor play calling and we need to work our rookie receivers more.lets get mason in the mix earlier and work on colt .we know what we have in collins
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
Barring a crazy barrage of injuries Colt is not going to play this year. Collins on the other hand is one injury away from being the starter so he definitely needs the work more than Colt.

Re: Passing The Ball!
Id like to split all of Devine's playing time between the top three quarterbacks. Keep Devine at practice, because we all know theres really no battle with him trying to unseat Brennan as our third.
Also cut Frost now, Brooks needs the work. |

Exactly. The problem was not the play calling. They need to hit the passes they throw, especially in the red zone. We moved the ball well between the 20s. |
Re: Passing The Ball!
Cut Devine, waste of time and space.
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
Why are people complaining about the playcalling? It's freakin' pre-season!
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
Right. Not only that, scrub Devine threw at INT in the end zone. We put together quite a few really nice drives. Now, if during the first half next week our starters can't put anything together, THEN I'd start getting worried.

Re: Passing The Ball!
Honestly, I thought we passed more than we ran while the first string offense was in. I love to see us throw the ball and I think JZ (Jim Zorn) did a good job at splitting up the pass and run attack.

I agree, but the Seattle connection is going to make sure that other teams get a good look at Devine. As far as I can tell they are just trying to help him get a job elsewhere. |
Re: Passing The Ball!
We will see this week against the Panthers, when the starters play for a half. That should give us an indication about both the players and JZ playcalling.
|
Re: Passing The Ball!
It looks to me like he's saving his real red zone stuff for the season. No one should be upset about the playcalling yet.
What did concern me is that Rocky Mcintosh was , like Lavar a few years back, running like he was in high heels. Are we going to have to limp along for half the season while he gets well? |
Re: Passing The Ball!
When it comes to playcalling I think people need to understand the difference between regular season football and the preseason.
In the regular season your main goal is to win. You gameplan, and you call plays to put you in a position to score. In the preseason your main goal is not to win the game, your goal is to evaluate your players in a game situation, and therefore the playcalling is going to be different than what you might do in the regular season. And the gameplanning is very little to practically none at all. |

I did not watch the Vikings game but they had 38 passes and 38 runs so it was not all passing like you stated. We have to use somewhat of a balance approach to keep the other team from knowing what we are doing. This gives us a better understanding of how players look because it more of what we will do in a real game time situation. |

Apparently Zorn was skeptical of the way Campbell holds onto the ball as well. Seems like he's not trusting his stuff, sort of like how Eli was last year. |
Re: Passing The Ball!
Does anyone know if Fred Davis is working with the first team? I thought that we'd see some two TE sets this preseason. Anyone have any news on this?

Re: Passing The Ball!
Nice to know I'm not the only one wondering why the f Devine is getting any time w/ the pigskin. WTF! We've got our three QBs in order and all three could use much more time building chemistry w/ the offense. If we see Devine get any playing time this weekend I'll be scratching my head bald.
As to the play-calling I don't see any there there. Zorn has every reason not to show his hand in the passing game. It's been said he spent a lot of time drawing up unique plays in Seattle - why would he let anyone see them in pre-season. I actually would like to see us run more this weekend - bout even instead of lopsided toward the passing game like Matty said we did against NY. For one thing, if Betts is healthy he should get a ton of carries to keep building the rhythm that makes him so lethal if he's needed down the road. Second, pounding the f'n ball down the defenses throats builds a certain attitude. We had it during the 2nd half of '06 and we could use it again - beat the shit out of defenses w/ an aggressive rushing attack. |
