Devin Thomas
This preseason, the one thing I was looking to see was how good our rookie wide recievers are. I was mad when neither of them were in the first two games, but Im even more upset now after watching Thomas. He was in throughout the entire length of the game and didn't even make one catch...not even against the people who are gonna be cut. This kid better pick up his game quick.

One, they did not throw his way enough. Two, your right, when they did, he was rather unimpressive. |
Re: Devin Thomas
Yeah, and Desean Jackson has set the world on fire in Philadelphia.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
Yeah I wasn't very impressed with Thomas either. Sure, the Qb's may not have been looking at him but maybe it was because he wasn't getting open. I know the Jets rookie CB, Dwight Lowry, was covering him pretty well tonight.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
It's his first game. Give the kid some slack. It's going to take time and very few rookie wr's ever come in and light it up. It was a risky pick but in all fairness let's judge him this time next year.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
No, he wasn't Randy Moss, but he's new and he's still raw. I was encouraged, he got his hands on the jump ball they did throw him and I think that's a catch he'll make next time. This was his first action and unlike Desean Jackson the Skins didn't make a concerted effort to get the guy the ball, they seemed to be targeting McMullen a lot. But he's a rookie wideout who hasn't had a full camp because of his hamstrings, he'll get better.
I think the reason he wasn't targeted is because the qbs were throwing to the guys they developed a rapport with in practice. |
Re: Devin Thomas
yeah, he needs to be conditioned, but you can't expect him or kelly to really light it up as rookies... wideouts almost always take a couple of years to adjust to the nfl for some reason...
|
Re: Devin Thomas
CUT HIM!!! :cussing:
<sarcasm> |
Re: Devin Thomas
Like I said before in an earlier thread, Devin will be our best wideout before the season is over. We did not get him the ball at all in the game like we did the other receivers. I mean we could have got him the ball in a number of ways: drags, outs, slants or a quick bubble screen which I did not see. If Zorn wanted to get him the ball then trust me he would have had the ball. I did not see why we did not get his feet wet and see what he can do besides on kick returns which is Cartwright's job. I have to believe that this will change against Carolina when the playcalling starts.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
He played like a kid that didn't didn't take part in off season work outs because of coming out of school and being his first NFL game. He going to be good with each week he gets to play. Is he going to be a super star out of the gate come the Giants game? No But if he can get 3 of 4 catches and maybe a TD that will not be bad. Coach Z will put him in postion that he can be the best he can be for that game! That is something coach Z is great at is getting the best out of his players and right now Thomas just tock his first NFL step!
|
Re: Devin Thomas
Before we all go on a witch hunt against Thomas, keep in mind this is his first game since college. He still getting adjusted to the game, and the way the deffense works. we all now its a lot different than in the pros than college. Plus our qbs did not throw to him that much, and the ones he did get thrown to him he appeared well covered for someone with his speed, but that could be because of his hamstring, its probally not fully healed. I will admitt though i was hoping he was gona have a good game like Jackson did for the eagles *shighs* ohwell, there always next week!!!!
|
Re: Devin Thomas
He's behind because of his injury and we need to keep in mind above all he's a rookie. Nothing to get too upset about.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
Let's give the kid more than 1 preseason game before we label him as the next Michael Westbrook. As stated by a few of you already, rookie WRs need time to adjust to the pro game. It's a lot faster in the NFL. I'm not too worried about him or Kelly.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
He caught some balls, they were out of bounds :) It's his first game as a pro, give the guy a break, he'll come through.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
No one on WP has patience anymore. I'd hate to see what any of your stock portfolios looks like.
He will not be cut, so just be patient and let him develop into the player tha twe drafted. |
Re: Devin Thomas
I thought everyone looked like crap last night, why do we have to single out Devin. The only player that looked good was man-crush Brennan.

offense stars: rock, mason, mcmullen, brennan, mann defense stars: boschetti, richardson, hamilton, jets PK nugent all these guys stood out the most to me that are fighting for spots. Mason continues to impress me over and over, he deserves to be on this team and be the backup if betts or portis was to go down. Mcmullen is catching my eye over and over this season. I would like to see Brennan behind a better and more consistent line because his time to throw is so limited at times. Mann was very solid and love the way he fought for yac. Boschetti was the big stand out on our back up line. Richardson looked very solid again in man coverage and loved his body slam tackle. Hamilton was huge on a few tackles and this guy is a gamer. love his tackle ability... but coverage??? dont know yet. |

slow down buddy, there were some positives in the o'line, but to many negatives especially rhinehart this game at LT. mid game we almost lost our back up qb, and devine and colt had very little time to throw. and if you noticed, i didnt mention any starters... this was an evaluation of guys trying to make the cut. run blocking was good, but pass blocking was very unimpressive especially in the 3rd and 4th qtr. And Devin looked like a guy who has not practiced alot so we should give him til the end of preseason to evaluate him for this up coming season. |

The majority of the backups are rookies and in my opinion are doing a great job in run blocking, pass blocking hasn't been too bad either. I know there were breakdowns, remember most of these guys are rookies, Clark, Rhinehart, Crummney. |
Re: Devin Thomas
so far from what i seen, it appears our 2nd and 3rd string O linemen are blocking better than our starters, but then again maybe thats beacuse its preseason and their figthing for a spot on the roster=]
|
Re: Devin Thomas
He needs more time working with the QB's, if they aren't on the same page they aren't going to go to him. He should have shown up early to camp and in shape, he has alot of making up to do.

And maybe that is because they're going up against 2nd and 3rd string defenders. Speaking of backup O lineman, Chad Rinehart looked really bad last night. I was really disappointed with him. |

He's not the savior guys come on. Just remember he isn't going to take us to the Super Bowl. Its the collection of weapons and recievers that will help us get there. |
Re: Devin Thomas
I don't think one catch is too much to expect, especially in a preseason game.
There are plenty or rookies who've made their presence known so far in the preseason: David Clowney, Desean Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins, Eddie Royal, Josh Morgan, Martin Nance, Dominique Zeigler, Onrea Jones and many more have been able to show up against the practice squad bound defenses they've faced. Devin did not. I'm not going to label him a bust, but you've got to admit that it's disappointing. And I'm sure there's no one more disappointed than DT either. Let's see if he bounces back next week. Some have pointed out that Dwight Lowery was manned up on Devin most the night, and it looks like the Jets have found themselves a quality CB in the fourth round. I wish the same could be said for the Skins CB from the 4th. |
Re: Devin Thomas
I want to take this time to let everyone know that patience is a frickin virtue!!
Devin Thomas will be in the starting lineup before week 5 of the regular season. Mind you, he has yet to be seen with the first team and in cumbent started JAson Campbell. He has a looooooong time ahead of him. My advice to everyone is to chill out. |

It's hard to compare DeSean Jackson to Devin Thomas. The Eagles have the same QB and offensive system they've been running for years. It's easier to try to integrate the rookie into a veteran system. The Redskins are taking veterans and trying to integrate all of them into a new offense. In his defense Devin was over-thrown a couple of times. He's no Art Monk or Jerry Rice, but it's completely unfair to expect that (especially right away). HAIL!! |
Re: Devin Thomas
You guys are hilarious.. Nevermind he practiced this week for the first time in nearly a month.. Nevermind he played his first game since January.. Nevermind he played with 4 different QB last night.. Dammit, we inducted one hall of fame WR 3 weeks ago and we expect Thomas to be the next one immediately!!!
If in Week 8 he plays 35-40 snaps a game and still doesn't have one catch, feel free to start asking questions, until then chillax! |
Re: Devin Thomas
You beat me to it, Paintrain. People seem to forget he's been hurt for weeks upon weeks. He's getting back into it, he's a rookie WR -- who are typically uneventful for a few years, give the guy some time.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
I totally understand the he's just getting back from his hammy tweak, he's new to the NFL, it's just preseason, all that. I wasn't asking for him to be ready for a yellow jacket. I just wanted one catch. Man, even B Lloyd's got one catch. In all fairness though, Devin did have a decent return last night, and he showed great effort in snagging that poorly thrown Devine pass that was ruled out of bounds. Hopefully, things come together for him in Carolina next week. I might go now, just to see that.

I agree! The other player that looked good and has continued to do so was mason...he is developing nicely! Colt will by next year be the back-up QB! I think his upside is tremendous. The team did not perform that well against the Jets and will need to work more in the preseason. Devin looked like the game was passing him by...as most rookie WR get introduced to the NFL. The game will slow down and he will get faster...the real question is how long will it take? |
Re: Devin Thomas
give him a chance to develop.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
Devin Thomas looked pretty pathetic out there but it's too early to judge him. Still, I didn't think his route running skill would be as bad as it was...then again, I was watching Santana Moss too...dude has mad route running skills.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
DT was on STs, so that says a lot about a rook. If they think they are a prima-donna, then they don't play teams. It takes more than one PS game for WRs.
|
Re: Devin Thomas
In a post game interview Devin stated that he was tired. I think the kid is not in NFL shape yet and is even further behind because of the hammy. It's going to take time. He ran a couple of kicks back and ran down on punts and is exhausted. He'll learn what it takes to play at this level but no one is going to feel sorry for him because he's our #1 pick. I wonder if any veterans have taken him under their wing? Antwan? Or is he a cocky kid who thinks he's got it figured out?
|
Re: Devin Thomas
He's admitted he isn't in the best shape and was tired during the game. Give him credit for owning up to his poor play.
He is probably a little too far behind to make an impact anytime soon but if he is willing to admit his mistakes I assume he is willing to correct them |
Re: Devin Thomas
Honestly, seems safe to say Thomas doesn't have enough of a track record to expect or anticipate any particular thing. I believed at the time of the draft he made a strange first pick (regardless of the round) because in the first pick you want lots of value w/ a strong scouting report. He's just a kid who had a phenomenal year in college - not much else to scout. He's a kid that could have huge upside but just as much downside, we won't know for quite a while. I still think he was a strange 1st pick.

What Thomas will do this go around is be in packages in coach Z's O. Not a full time player. Next spring he will need to put in big time in the weight room and running along with hours with JC throwing the ball to him! This is not college ball and this is the big time. He will learn that like all 1st year WR's do!
|
Re: Devin Thomas
Devin did cactch a ball as he was diving out of bounds. If he would have gotten his feet down it wold have been a completion. Had he gotten that completion, the thread would have read something like "Start him now" or "Devin Thomas for HOF".
He is still a rookie guys; give him at least 3 years before you call him out. On average thats how long it takes to develop into a good WR in this league. |
Re: Devin Thomas
Devin Thomas may turn out to be a complete bust or he may be the next TO. To even have an opinion about him at this point, however, based on his first preseason game after missing most of training camp to injury, is so stupid it makes me dizzy.
