When will Jansen go?
Ive been sick of this guy for the past two years, he used to be a beast, but now just cant cut it (blame it on injuries or age, i really dont care). The guy has a monster contract (25 mil, 15 guaranteed over the next 4 years), and is always either hurt or playing like shit (at least in pass protection). If we are gonna have a shitty starter, we should be paying him a shitty salary. When do you guys think that Jansen will go?
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
Well he was hurt last year, not sure why you would hate him for that. And the year before he battled through a bunch of different injuries and was still solid playing with broken thumbs.
If there's not a better option then he should remain the starter. I don't think Heyer is ready to overtake him just yet. My question is why are some people so eager to run him out of town? |
Re: When will Jansen go?
I agree Matty right now what other choice do we have and the season has not even started yet. Lets give him a few games before we start kicking him out of town.

But, I've got to agree that he just looks like he is about washed up. It seems like only yesterday he was dominant, when in reality he hasn't been playing at a high level since 2003. In 2004 he was on IR, in 2005 he struggled and we all attributed it to his recovery but he also struggled in 2006, and he was on IR for the 2007 season. He's still a good road-grading RT, but he just looks old and slow in pass protection. He's the best RT we have, but we should find a new starter and Jansen should be relegated to back-up duty in 2009 if he doesn't have a good season. |

Why are you mad at him for his contract? Should he rip up his contract and suggest one that pays him much less? Jansen has been a real solid, real good tackle for many years. Give him a little time. He's coming off major injuries. No doubt he's getting older, but he could still have a couple of solid years left. Shouldn't you give the longest tenured Redskins who's played thru major injuries the benefit of the doubt instead of throwing him under the bus? I'm not saying we should throw someone out there that's a liability to the team, but JJ is a proven NFL starter in this league. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
The really sad part is that he is the best RT the Skins have right now. The Skins dont have anyone better so he's the guy they gotta go with until he gets injured again.
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
I realize Jon Jansen has been a loyal member to this team for a long time, but he has had some devastating injuries - especially the one last year. He seems to be injury prone now and on the down, downside of his career and is below the average starting RT in our division. I hope I am proved wrong, but it seems that only out of loyalty would he stay on the roster past this season.
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
He'll come through and shut all the naysayers up. The guy hasn't even played in a regular season and they are already calling for his and others heads.
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
He's been one of my favorites for a long time and I hope he's able to rebound. He has struggled in the preseason, but he's a true pro and I think that he'll be fine once the season starts.

Re: When will Jansen go?
My question is why are some people so eager to run him out of town?
Because he plays a position that can get franchise players killed if he misses a block. I like jansen more than Samuels but you have to keep an eye on him. He is clearly struggling. Hopefully it's just rust and he can rebound this year. |
My question is why are some people so eager to run him out of town?
Big contract probably. I haven't gone through all the threads after the debacle on Sat., but so far I've seen Jansen getting run out of town, but not much mention of Samuels getting MANHANDLED by Julius Peppers. Maybe we should get rid of Samuels too? (sarcasm) There sure wasn't a cry for Jansen's head when we were 3-0 and the starting O was looking solid. Is the guy playing at a high level, not really, but he's not ready for the trash bid either. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
I have been a big fan of the original "Rock" (before Cartright came) as a guy who played every game and, even as a rookie, handed Strahan admirably. But I must agree that it haa been quite a while since he performed like a stud.
With his big salary, you can't help but wonder if that $ might be better spent elsewhere. However, I know we can't free ourselves of his contract. There is about a $14m release fee this year (per crazy canuck). I wonder if we can get creative NEXT year. If he were to retire could we recoup that signing bonus money and then hire him as an expenses o-line coach? His work ethic and lockerroom presence are great, just not his on field performce these days. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
What a hater thread. Jansen deserves every chance to come back and see how he plays. Our line has been decent and when Jansen and Samuels are on top of their game it is among the best. Again, with out hating on Campbell to bad, the problem is getting rid of the ball in 3 seconds, not pass protecting for 10.

If I'm correct Samuels name was only called once when Peppers ran right through him but there could have been more. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
I try to ignore the players' contract in evaluating them, especially after the 53 man roster has been set.
The best player should play, regardless of their pay. If he is the best we have for now, play him. History does show he is injury prone, no matter how well he plays when he's not hurt. That has to be a determinant in how long we keep him around after this year. I'd say if he's out more than 4 games this year with injuries, he won't be around next year. J-Dawg. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
I'm not at the same level of anger/hatred as the OP, I'm kinda tired of seeing Jansen playing like he's on roller skates. It's been a few (2003?) years since he's been healthy and a standout. He's serviceable at best right now. Thankfully the best pass rushers we'll face in the division (Cole, Ware, Tuck) all play over the LT so that's not too much of a concern but Heyer needs to get up to speed rather quickly cause Jansen's demise isn't going to be pretty or gradual.
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
Am i wrong? but didnt Parcells say that Jansen was done 3-4 years ago? He is a pretty good talent evaluator. If Jansen keeps playing the way he has been, then we might see Colt alot sooner than we expected.

Is the guy playing at a high level, not really, but he's not ready for the trash bid either.
I'll admit I'm slightly worried about the Samuals getting manhandled by Peppers situation (I haven't had the guts nor the motivation to download the game and see for myself) but from what I understand, Pepers is a man on a mission after amassing only 2.5 sacks last year in 14 games (yes THE Jullius Peppers). In fact some might say he's walking into a Ben Rothesberger type situation this year, though from what I know he's never been on a motorcycle. So it might have been more of a combination of Samuals lack of motivation in a preseason game combined with Peppers overwhelming desire to prove himself again (which he had a chance to do this weekend against a guy of Samuals caliber in the preseasons only half game). In the end though I'm kind of glad we got our ass kicked this week. My Dad use to always talk about how he was happy that Maryland went through the same things before March Madness during the year they won they title, and in this case it's happening during the preseason so at least the loss won't sting to bad. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
The game against Carolina was an aberration, the players and coaches are trying to get over Joe Bugel's daughter dying. People forget these guys are human, remember last year against Buffalo the infamous Gibbs timeout mistake? This guys are human, I wouldn't be surprised if Holly's death didn't linger from last years tragic events.

Re: When will Jansen go?
I knew a thread like this had to pop up at some point.
I truly hope jansen can get it together, but he has struggled in pass pro & that's not surprising given his age, injuries. Maybe he'll regain form later in the year, but how long will they wait for that? I think you have to pose the question in relation to the entire o line, can Rinehart take Kendall's job later in the year? How ready is Heyer? I actually think there is a chance they move Jansen inside to play guard in the future. That might save his career. He'd be good at pulling & he can still run block well. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
Just watched the Chris Samuels interview on Redskins.com and he attributed the JP punk job to poor technique, specifically bad hand placement. It sure appears that this O-Line cannot afford one day without Joe Bugel. They throw all technique out of the window. Rabach got handled as well. So far the good news is that Randy Thomas has looked good coming off of his injuries last year. That aside Jansen has not played well for years. I think his days as a RT are over. Ask any DE in the league that has played him over the last 4 years. In fact ask are own DE's. He does not look good in practice either. Let's just be honest for once. He's a great leader but the tape does not lie. I've rewatched the preseason film and it does not matter who he is lined up against in pass coverage he get's handled.

Yeah, tuna hit the ball out of the park on his pre-draft opinion of Chris Cooley too. |

Re: When will Jansen go?
Jansen's injury last year wasn't something that could've been prevented. He got rolled up on. Just bad luck. So I wish people would stop calling him injury prone. However from what I've seen so far he simply can't pass block anymore. I can't even imagine what Tuck is going to do to this guy a week from Thurs. We'd better start running the ball, stop sending out 5 guys and max protecting.

Re: When will Jansen go?
I don't think Heyer has looked much better than Jansen so far this preseason, after last year I really felt that he might push Jansen for the starting RT job. As far as Samuel's goes I am not to concerned, Zorn said in his press conference that he was fine outside of the play.
|
Re: When will Jansen go?
Thanks a million Beastsofthe... Not only am I forced to watch the trainwreck that is John Jansen now I'm reminded that we're paying the guy like he's one of the best RT in pro football - this for a guy I think any honest observer realizes wouldn't get the league min from the other 31 teams.
If he's the best option we've got at RT my grade of the draft/off-season has to drop. On the other hand, I think we'll know whether he's the best option fairly soon. Already injured and looking more arthritic every day, I can't see JJ playing a full game in the regular season - easy prediction. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
I just don't get all the hate.
1- good tackles are hard to come by. 2- Jansen KNOWS the position VERY well. 3- He's coming off a huge injury, and needs time (yet another reason NOT to watch preseason games) 4- If he truly has nothing left, I doubt Zorn / Bugel would be dumb enough to allow him to start at tackle and hurt the team. Either you have faith in Zorn or you don't. I haven't exactly been a Zorn advocate, but I certainly am giving him a long enough leash that includes quite a few games...regular season that is. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
Well said Jsarno. Tackles are hard to come by, and the team is doing the right things with Heyer and Rhinehardt in the wings developing.
Dont hate, even the best tackles get beat. Personally im more worried about rabach getting dominated in the preseason than jansen. |

Good post. The Tuna is not always right. Great football guy but he's been wrong before. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
Yeah, tuna hit the ball out of the park on his pre-draft opinion of Chris Cooley too.
I think a pre-draft opinion is clearly different that and evaluation of a player who has been in the league for years, how many people passed on Tom Brady? Parcells said JJ lost a step, which he clearly has. While he is a great leader and locker room guy, he is also a liability. We dont really have that much depth on the line (as far a quality backups that have the ability to move in an supplant a starter) so we will have to stick with JJ. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
i disagree..Heyer performed very well at both sides last year as a rookie. Rhinehart is versitile enough to play tackle. There is depth there.
i disagree..Heyer performed very well at both sides last year as a rookie. Rhinehart is versitile enough to play tackle. There is depth there.
Not in the games I watched and not according to Buges. He often performed adequately. He consistently needed help in dealing with any DE that was above average. In one game (don't remember which), Cooley was effectively removed from the passing game b/c he was helping Heyer. Earlier this year Buges was asked "Is it true some of the younger guys are looking to Stephon for advice on how to make in the pros?" To which Bugel responded "They better not be, he's got learn how to do it himself before he gives anybody else advice." As for Rinehart, been trying to watch him play but can't tell from what I've seen how he's doing. He seems to be a favorite of both Buges and Zorn. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
Heyer has another year under his belt, and lets be honest buges is critical of everyone!
Even jansen and samuels. Plus wade is there to play tackle. i still think jansen is our best bet, and we'll just have to wait and see how he does. But to be honest i feel better about "depth" on our line than i have in a long time. whether they play well or not is another issue. Id be more concerned about center right now. Rabach has been lackluster. |
Re: When will Jansen go?
Yes we have depth, but i dont think any of the back ups at this point are good enough to take over the starting job from our current starters. Barring injuries we are stuck with this line, and if the preseason is any indication as to how this line is going to perform, then it is going to be a long season for our QBs

Real funny. Not sure whether you're making the connection here but I've actually been concerned that Jansen's presence puts JC at higher risk for injury. People keep saying there is no better option at RT and if that's true things look a little scary IMO. |

Yes good tackles are hard to come by but have to ever thought that Jansen isn't any good anymore? 2. Just cause he knows his position doesn't mean he can play it very well 3. Yes he's coming off a huge injury but how much time does he need? Maybe the coaches should start mixing in Heyer some til Jansen is 100% 4. Yes cause maybe they trust a vet more than they trust a 2nd year free agent. Right now I don't trust Jansen or Heyer. |
