Heyer will Start against Giants
Heyer to Start; Practice Squad Set (Updated) - Redskins Insider
No word on whether this is a demotion for Jansen, or a one time thing due to injury. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Thank the lord. I love JJ but I'm tired of seeing him get destroyed by less than top flite pass rushers. I think he and Heyer should split a lil time.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
It's the right move. Keeping Durant Brooks was the right move. Keeping five wide recievers was a curious and quite possibly completely crazy move. Keeping Tryon was the move of someone who smokes crack.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I hope its not permanent (atleast for this season). I love the terps and was impressed by what heyer was able to do in a pretty crazy situation last year as an undrafted rookie but I still think jansen is our best option at RT. Jansen has slowed alot since the year he played with 2 broken hands(?) but he is still imo the entrenched starter. Next year i would like to see a very competitive battle for the RT spot with jansen given every opportunity to keep it. Jansen isnt an elite or even great tackle anymore but he is still good and gives us the best chance to win this year imo.
heyer's got that great big body with a large wing span and reports were that he reported to camp in great shape but i think he is still a year away from getting serious starter discussion. I also would like us to draft a tackle next year in the first couple of rounds. go skins! only 5 days left!!! go skins! |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
My guess is that it's a combination of the injury and Jansen's piss-poor play this pre-season. I am very curious to see how Jansen responds--my hope it that it will light a fire under him and he'll step back in. He's got a lot of pride as a player. Now he needs to step up and show why he should start.
Funny how Wise at the Post thought this was disrespectful to Jansen. Does he really think Jansen won the job this season? And it puts the lie to Wise's comments about a lack of open competition in camp. The FO can't win here, I suppose: either they've gone too much with draft picks or they aren't respecting vets. I have an idea: let's just let the Post pick and coach the team. That would solve all our problems, no doubt! |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
tryon = darrell green
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
tryon <> DG YET! (great if he becomes a 20yr Skin)
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Tyron has more potential than the cut DBs, IMO. Let's see if he can improve over time. With draft picks, a little patience!!!
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Good call. Jansen is finished IMO. He did a lot for the franchise, but his time is over.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Bottom line, Jansen had a horrible pre-season. Stevie Wonder could have seen that. I like the fact that coach Zorn has the guts to make the call before we got two or three games into the season, and watch Jansen struggle horribly. He's making this a non-controversy before it get's off the ground. Good call.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Agreed.
I think this is pretty much a combination of Jansen's injury and the fact that he sucked in preseason as well. I'm curious to see if this is Zorn's way of lighting a fire under Jansen's ass, or if this pretty much means it's the end of Jansen's time in Washington. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I mean, at this point what's the point of lighting a fire under Jansen? I don't get that part at all. If anything, it's lighting a fire under Heyer not Jansen. It will encourage Heyer to continue to improve and get even better game after game. Jansen had all the incentive in the world to keep his job and show that he deserved it.
At any rate, whether it's Jansen or Heyer, both are much, much, much better than Todd Wade. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
jansen will probably get the start against the saints, i'm sure zorn will say the only reason heyer is starting is so jansen can rest his injury...despite his comments earlier in the week.

I gotta disagree with you here. If Heyer holds it down against the Giants, no way in hell Zorn benches him just because Jansen's foot is better. Truth is this is probably an injury Jansen could, if he had to, play with. And for the entire pre-season you could probably slip a butter knife between the two of them in terms of quality of play. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I dooubt it. Jansen is done. I have said in a previous post that we need to upgrade the right tackle position for the last couple of years. I mean Al Saunders could not get his scheme to really work without protection. I also believe that Samuels need to move to the right tackle position and we need to draft someone to play left tackle for us a la Walter Jones to protect Campbell's blind side. I honestly believe we need to get more athletic on the offensive line. Seattle's GM stated that he always wanted a bid, fast and agile group and we are definitely lacking that. I believe in next years draft we will focus on this offensive line as well as defensive line.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I like Jansen and appreciate his play all these years. But for him to act all surprised about not starting confirms what I've been thinking. The offensive line seems to think they are greater than their play indicates. They seem to be caught up in the idea that they are great. They CAN be , but they have'nt been. It's time to live up to your name.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
yea, 12thman, after reading a few more of the players quotes it definitely appears as if jansen has lost his job as starter. it's just sad that he was injury free for so long even earning comments from samuels and others about being overlooked for the probowl and such, then to have the unfortunate and bizarre injuries (two broke thumbs, achilles??) coupled with age that look like they may have led to his demise. I like what i see in heyer and definitely trust buges along with the rest of the coaching staff to make the right decision...that's about all I can do.

Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Live interview with Jon & Heyer after todays practice on Redskin.com:
Posted at 4:11 PM ET, 08/31/2008 Jansen on Demotion; Kelly Doubtful Jon Jansen, the longest serving player in the organization, was as standup as can be about losing his job to Stephon Heyer, speaking immediately after practice. Jansen, who practiced fully and said his sprained foot is no longer an issue, clearly does not agree with the decision, but showed restraint in his comments. "I'm disappointed that I'm not going to be out there," Jansen said. "I still believe myself to be the right tackle here, but it's not going to be that way [Thursday], and that's what I have to deal with." Jansen said he is "healthy and ready to go when needed." He said he was given some explanations but "nothing that I felt was reason enough." He hopes to practice hard and win back his spot - Jansen was getting a lot of work at guard today - but knows the decision rests with the coaches. Jansen yielded several sacks in preseason games and had many difficult moments as he worked back from a gruesome broken leg that ended his 2007 season in Week 1. His teammates along the offensive line had expressed their confidence and support in him throughout the preseason, and Jansen believed he was making strides, too. "It really doesn't matter how I grade myself," Jansen said. "They graded me not the starting right tackle, so that's how it is." |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Either way we're screwed at RT. All I remember was Heyer getting destroyed against Patrick Kerney in the playoff loss. He got owned. Is he any better this year? I don't see it. We'll find out Thurs. Jansen has just been a joke.

I don't think I would take it that far. It's pretty clear Heyer has improved quite a bit since last season, so I wouldn't read to much into how a first year undrafted rookie played against Kerney. That was then and this is now. And from all accounts he has worked his ass off this off season. I will give the guy a fair shake and take a wait and see approach, before jumping to any conclusion that we are screwed at RT. You just might be in for a surprise at how well he performs, but only time will tell. |

Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
On a side note it appears that this demotion is likely to stick as Jansen is listed as backup Right Tackle on the depth chart.
Heyer Named Starter At Right Tackle Now Heyer has secured a position in the 2008 starting lineup. “I’m excited to play,” Heyer said. “I have an opportunity to go out and play a big game. It’s the season opener and a lot of people will be watching.” Heyer had entered training camp as the primary backup to left tackle Chris Samuels. He moved over to play right tackle in the preseason finale against Jacksonville as Jansen sat out with a foot injury. Heyer’s performance in that game solidified his spot as the starter. “I was prepared for anything, because so many things have happened for me,” Heyer said. “I viewed it as, ‘If you just go in and play your game, then whatever happens, happens.’ “It’s the coach’s decision to do what they feel is necessary for the team. All you can do is sit there and take it.” Jansen, the longest tenured Redskin having joined the team in 1999, admitted he was “disappointed” to be benched. “I still believe myself to be the right tackle here,” he said. “But it’s not going to be that way on Thursday and that’s what I have to deal with.” On the team’s depth chart, Jansen is now listed as the backup right tackle to Heyer. Jansen said his foot injury this preseason “is not an issue." He participated fully in Sunday’s practice, even lining up at left guard for one drill. Zorn said he empathized with Jansen’s feelings on the matter. Getting demoted is something that Zorn experienced late in his playing career with the Seattle Seahawks. “It can be trying,” Zorn said. “Things change, and now Jon has to be able to live up to that and keep working hard. He has to know that it’s not over for him. “This is the ultimate team sport. He has to continue to help and push and be a pro. He has seen a lot of guys come and go. He’s not gone. He has to be ready.” |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I think Heyer will do fine. He should be quicker than Jansen and the experience last year
will be invaluable. Jansen can extend his career by learning the guard positions. |

Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Finally!!! This is no surprise. Jansen has been on the decline for 4 years. The film
does not lie. He's been getting destroyed for years. He's great in the locker room and a true warrior, but maybe he'll be better suited as a guard. I'm shocked it took this long to make this move. Heyer had really one bad game, against Kearney and who didn't last year. Todd Wade was better at RT than Jansen. It's not personal, just the truth. Let's move forward. He's in denial and a whole lot of Jansen supporters have been drinking the Kool-Aid. |

I think this applies to the entire team. Some of the players seem to act like making the Redskins squads means they have arrived. Not so. If our team sucks this years, the only that will have arrived is embarrasment. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
Let this be a wake-up call to the rest of the under achieving players. It's not what you've done in the past, it's what have you done for me lately.

Good call, I agree with you! its time to move on, and some people here got a man crush on over and past their prime players........Samuels at RT and Jones at LT......be nice |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
This is a first year coach move!!!
Zorn wants to get the attention of some of the vets around the park and get them to realize that if there play is not up to par, you are gone from the starting line-up. The owners can help dictate who is kept on the roster but Zorn will dictate who will play on Sundays... or Thursday! Notice to all! Zorn will win or burn on his terms! I like it!!! I respect Jansen but his play recently has been bad! Get better from your injuries and work your a** off and get your starting gig back!! |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
No controversy here, Jansen has been completely dominated. I kind of remember reading somewhere that Zorn was interested in cutting Jansen but that it was explained to him to be cap-prohibitive, at least this year.
He`s a great guy and a true Redskin and I`m sure he`ll continue to be a positive influence behind the scenes. I`m also pretty sure he`s gonna be called upon to contribute at some point during what will be a long season. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I also think it is ridiculous to argue that this is intended to be a "wake up move." Jansen is not Brandon Lloyd, bumming around and not living up to his contract. He's just old and increasingly ineffective. If you were going to make an example of someone, which I don't think Zorn would, it wouldn`t be Jansen. This is about winning in week one, nothing more.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
with no games played in Zorn's tenure this IMO is a reputation alone means nothing...he will make the moves that need to be made...like Jansen who was recently unproductive.
Zorn is not cutting Jansen just putting him on notice...elevate your game or you will be gone. It may be miniscule move that needed to be done but a move that some in the past have not made. Jansen being the stand up guy he is will rebound and recover a bit and hopefully get better in the next couple of weeks... If history says anything he will be called upon at some time for his services. |
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
I think Jansen's teammates also recognized the demise of his play and made it known by not naming him as one of their captains.
|
Re: Heyer will Start against Giants
What I have not been able to get over is that Jansen seems so oblivious to his drop off in play. It is like he has blinders on when some "no name" DE is pancaking him on the way to a sack. If he would just once say something like "I haven't played at as high of a level yet as I need to, but I'm confident I will get there soon and win back my job. The rust from the injury and missing last year is almost off...", then I'd respect that.
What he does say is:

"It really doesn't matter how I grade myself,"
explanations were "nothing that I felt was reason enough."
I've felt I've done a good job this preseason. I didn't play very well against the Panthers, but neither did anybody else. Until then, I've had lot people in the organization tell me I was having the best camp I've ever had."
Sorry, but the guy just doesn't even see whats going on. He has a delusional self image. Maybe this makes him work harder and get back to being a good RT. |

Dude had the worst numbers of all starting goalies in the entire league and he was furious that he was replaced. Jansen isn't acting like a jerk or anything, but if he didn't have a clue that he needed to actually fight for his starting role then you can see exactly why he is no longer on the first team. |

All I have to say is that I want to thank Jansen for his years .. and everything he's done. He is a work horse and he has tried and tried to give his BEST.. he deserves the best.. THANK YOU JANSEN for 11 years!!!

How could he watch himself on tape and think that he was playing well. How did Buges allow him to have such an unrealistic view of his play. As I watched a few practices it was very evident. Heyer played well against NY last year so I am confident he will do well again. Eventually Heyer will be a better run blocker as well. |
