Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell was kind enough to dial the NFC Beast hotline earlier this afternoon and share his thoughts on Thursday's season-opener against the Giants.
I need to save most of our discussion for a column I'm writing for Thursday, but here are a few tidbits:

On how poorly the team finished the preseason: "You're playing with a lot of mystery guys in the preseason," he said. "No one's trying to game plan or do anything like that. We just got beat in a lot of areas. But we had just six plays in the last game. People then judge you on those six plays. We just sort of have to keep our ears plugged. You almost need something like that. You'd rather go through some things in the preseason than when games count."

On the Giants losing Osi Umenyiora to injury: "He and [Michael] Strahan were the two premier guys in the league," said Campbell. "But without Justin Tuck, it may have been a different Super Bowl. People may not really know him, but he's made a lot of plays and he dictates the way teams approach them."

On the two second-round WRs not making an impact so far: "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed about that," he said about Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. "We had so much expectation for those guys contributing to our offense. I thought we'd grow together quickly. I went over to their place and visited with them about everything. I told them this was the real deal. They needed to show up on time for meetings and to study. We need them out there."
ESPN - Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason - NFC East |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Sounds like a confident (but NOT cocky) swagger in his words. I like that. I can't wait for tomorrow night!
HAIL!! |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Jason Campbell is the man. I find that refreshing that they only had 6 plays in the last game. It makes me feel a little better that the offense looked like an old mans @ss.
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
I like how he's calling out the rookie WRs. He's definitely acting like the team captain he's supposed to be. I'm very happy with that.
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Despite the recent preseason struggles JC just seems to have this air of confidence about him.
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Hell Yeah Jason, I like that, way to take command and let them know whats up. Whip them young WR's into shape Campbell!!!
I think Campbell is the real deal, i have so much confidence in him, and I think Jason will finally start to prosper under Zorns teaching |

At least keeping his cool with the media is one area he remains consistent. |

You just can't let things go huh Does every thread that references Campbell require you to piss on it? |

Does every thread that references Campbell require you to piss on it?
Um, that statement was far from me "pissing on it"..... so don't make it worse than it really is. |

It's just another backhanded comment from you that's starting to get old that's all. You're not a big believer in JC, we get it. |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
I like JC's leadership. I really think if he can just get comfortable in the offense he'll be lights out. Right now I think he looked too uncomfortable but I think he can change that.
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
You have to love the fact that he's taking Kelly and Thomas to the woodshed (in their own homes, no less).
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
JC needs these guys in order for him to have a good season. We need more production from the WR position. Kelly and Thomas have got a long way to go. Thomas has bust written all over him.

How can you tell after only two preseason games? |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
I love to hear my QB talking like the LEADER he needs to be. I just hope that we can stay with one offense long enough for him to reach his full potential.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working. |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
LOL has the season even started yet?
Can't wait to hear those midseason cries for rookies to be cut. |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Wow. These are EXACTLY the things I needed to hear come out of JC's mouth, especially about our WR draft picks.
Stay vocal Jason and take control, this is YOUR team! |

Can't wait to hear those midseason cries for rookies to be cut.
No no. We're stuck with them now. It's like having TWO of Taylor Jacobs. If I'm wrong, I'll be the happiest man in America, but I'm hardly ever wrong, as you all know. |

I'm just gettting a bad feeling about this guy. He only had one good season, the season before that he barely caught any balls, he had no production at all. Now he's all of a sudden thrown into an NFL training camp and he's just not ready for the NFL game. This looks like Taylor Jacobs. I hope like hell I'm wrong. |

C'mon now, don't lose faith so quickly. You were pretty high on him back in March/April. |

Offiss? Is that really you? |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
We need Kelly to get on the field. He was going to play more of a role this season. He's going to be opposite of Moss putting El in the slot. We need him to get on the field. Thomas is more of a work in progress and he mainly is going to play as Moss's backup.

Can't wait to hear those midseason cries for rookies to be cut.
No kidding. We had 2 banged up rookies. They are behind. It sucks. Are they busts? Hardly. History dictates anyways that if one of the two are any good then we'll be in good shape. WRs are hit and miss big time. |

I don't think its fair to expect that he is going to contribute significantly in his first year. You can't call him a bust when you haven't seen him in a real game situation. Wait it out |

Wait it out
I must, once again, defend the distinction between "Devin Thomas was a bad selection" and "Devin Thomas is a bust."
The first statement is something I made less than 5 seconds following his selection. The second is something that I (and skinsfan69 and everyone else who has any patience) would not even consider saying until sometime into the 2009 season. We'll wait it out as fans, because there's no other real option. But I think there is something to be said when your decision maker chooses the worst prospect out of all the players being considered with his first selection. We'll live, as long as this doesn't become a trend. Bad selections are made all the time in the NFL, and apparently, the Redskins are not above that. |

Not really, I don't have man crushes. Plus we were talking about D. Thomas |
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
I think it says a lot that his teammates voted him a captain and he is showing that he is by taking in the young guys. I bet he wishes he had Mix, McMullen or even Matty running routes instead of the rookies, but he is a true leader and won't say it out loud. JC is a smart and very passionate (not rah rah or arrogant) qb who I think will still have an up and down season but more ups than downs.
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
said it a thousand times before, and I'll say it again...PRESEASON MEANS NOTHING! We are about to embark on a brand new season. I'm excited.

Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
Sounds like this beast is still a cub
|
Re: Campbell to NFC Beast: Don't sweat the preseason
It appears that if you look fantastic in the preseason, it doesn't mean too much, i.e. Spurrier in 2002.
But if you suck in preseason, and your team looks absolutely inept and clueless, then you might have some problems that will show up pretty quickly when the games are real. |
