Dolphins say no to Redskins deal

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/9520158.htm

"According to a source within the Redskins, the Dolphins were offered wide receiver Rod Gardner, running back Ladell Betts and a fifth-round pick for defensive end Adewale Ogunleye. Miami passed, figuring Betts might ultimately be cut."

SKINSnCANES 08-28-2004 12:04 PM

Weird. The fins should have taken the first we offered them a while ago.

Defensewins 08-28-2004 12:05 PM

After the way Rock and co. played last night, I do not see Betts getting cut.

Paintrain 08-28-2004 12:24 PM

I agree, Rock has looked pretty bad this preaseason.. No pop, no burst.. I like the effort he puts out, but let's go with Betts and McCollough..

McCollough looked bad last night as well.

skins009 08-28-2004 01:01 PM

Damn it would have been really tight, if they would have taken that deal.

illdefined 08-28-2004 01:04 PM

would have been worth it.

MTK 08-28-2004 01:04 PM

Betts is safe.

His injury problems are worth the gamble for this year at least. Next year is a different story if he can't stay healthy this year.

My prediction is that Simon and McCullough are the odd men out.

McCullough is too similar to Portis in style and size, and let's face it, he's only played against backups. If the staff was seriously considering him don't you think we would see him a bit earlier in the game? Last night after Betts left the game Rock came in. That's a sign to me that Rock will make the team.

:twocents:

RedskinPete 08-28-2004 01:17 PM

If he[Betts] can get by the injurys he will be good! I hate to see him go! With Portis not wanting to run the ball seven times in a row[what was said last night during the game]. We will need Betts!

skins009 08-28-2004 01:51 PM

I think between Portis and Morton we've got plenty of speed in the backfield. What we need now is someone with some power. Thats why I think they'll keep Betts and Cartwright, and release Sultan and Simon.

Big C 08-28-2004 02:23 PM

betts is probably the best mix of power and speed, and he can also catch the ball well, have to keep him, number 1 backup

cpayne5 08-28-2004 02:37 PM

I don't think that we'll keep Betts & McCullough together. Those two guys are 2 runningbacks where as Rock and Simon are RBs/ special teams players. I think we'll keep one of Betts & McCullough and one of Rock & Simon.

Redskins_P 08-28-2004 02:48 PM

Simon didn't even play last night. Whats up with that?

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 02:51 PM

Simon was resting his shoulder, I guess he aggravated it during practice this week

I think Sultan goes back to the practice squad. Betts and Rock I think are both in and Simon is out

SKINSnCANES 08-28-2004 03:43 PM

I bet most of them are still on the team after the first round of cuts. There are plenty of other guys that obvioulsy shouldnt make the team that will get us down tot sixty.

Big C 08-28-2004 03:53 PM

when does skins and canes get the joe gibbs icon?

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 04:03 PM
when does skins and canes get the joe gibbs icon?
He needs to become a Stonecutter first. Once Canes passes the following ordeals:

The Crossing of the Desert
The Unblinking Eye
and the Paddling of Swollen Asses....with Paddles

Then, and only then, will he be able to:

Control the British crown
Keep the metric system down
Hold back the electric car
Make Steve Guttenberg a star...

and get that Gibbs icon

lol, make steve guttenberg a star? wow hes never getting it. i mean, paddling swollen asses, thats like taking candy from a baby, but geez, tough credentials man

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 04:22 PM

I should clarify I suppose that it's his swollen ass that will be paddled

The Petitbon/Turner/Robiskie/Schottenheimer/Spurrier icons were considerably easier to get, but this is Gibbs we're talking about!

Big C 08-28-2004 04:28 PM

i guess everyman needs a good ass paddling in his life lol

SKINSnCANES 08-28-2004 04:31 PM

lol, so what your saying is I can have a peitibon icon now if I want...hmmm...tempting....

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 04:42 PM

We've banned all previous coach icons

LOL. I sure hope Matty doesn't get upset that I've revealed some of the secrets behind the Gibbs icon...punishment is being locked in a room listening to Daseal read passages from "Quotable Spurrier: The Nerve, Verve, and Victorious Words of and about Steve Spurrier"

j/k Daseal!

EEich 08-28-2004 04:51 PM

What I don't understand is how a CANES fan could be head-over-heels with a Gator. Like a Sox fan loving Torre.

Big C 08-28-2004 04:53 PM

lol, my best frind goes to uva, hahaha

Carnage 08-28-2004 05:28 PM

I'll bet whichever rb we do cut ends up in miami.

Hogskin 08-28-2004 06:48 PM

Well, I'm glad to see our guys were in there TRYING to land the guy we needed so badly. I had hoped they would offer a round 2 pick. But it probably would not have mattered since they got offered Booker. They apparently saw the same films of Gardner I did...

Big C 08-28-2004 07:08 PM

we dont have a round 2 next year cuz of the cooley trade

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 07:11 PM

I thought we didn't have a round 2 because of the Champ/Clinton deal

JudgeJebus 08-28-2004 07:17 PM

I think we lost this year's (2004) second rounder in the Bailey-Portis trade. We lost next year's (2005) second rounder for this year's third rounder, which we used to take Cooley.

SmootSmack 08-28-2004 07:18 PM

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification

Daseal 08-28-2004 07:56 PM

Wait a minute? Spurrier icon?! HOW MANY POSTS! (Don't visit the parkinglot for some time, guys!)

hilarious!

Daseal 08-29-2004 12:17 AM

You know what's sad? I've actually read a book that has a bunch of Spurrier quotes in it. I think my dad owns it.

MTK 08-29-2004 12:20 AM

Someone actually wrote them down?

I thought they'd just be scribbled in the dirt somewhere along with his ball plays.

Shane 08-29-2004 03:38 AM

Byner has spoken highly of McCullough, and I think we will keep him. I don't think all the talk about the importance the Redskins place on durability is a smoke screen - I think that betts is going to be traded or cut.

If Betts was the number one backup and then he's out, who is going to be the guy we rely on? Rock is cool, Simon's solid, but are they the guys we want to depend on in crunch time if Portis is out?

I think we will rely on McCullough as the top backup. If we do release him, he will be an excellent player for another team and I think we'll regret it. Portis only got 17 carries a game in Denver, and he'll get one third more in DC, but we will still need to spell him, and we will want someone who can do things that look similar - and McCullough's the man for that in my opinion.

I expect the Redskins not to look at who was drafted where and will keep McCullough.

bedlamVR 08-29-2004 05:52 AM

McCullough has done nothing to be kept over the other RB in my oppinion . He has picked up yards mostly against second and third teams. Somone has to do that but because he has not really steped up into the starter role then i think that speeks volumes in terms of his survivability.

MTK 08-29-2004 10:10 AM

Byner has spoken highly of all the backs, but somebody has gotta go

illdefined 08-29-2004 10:51 AM

all these guys are comparable in running effectiveness, which is to say just ok, not great. no one stands out except maybe Betts. we should keep the guy who has the best other abilities like pass blocking and catching for 3rd down. if someone is alot better at this than Betts, then we should keep them instead. he's way too unreliable.

Big C 08-29-2004 11:10 AM

in the end, i think we will be better off with betts as the backup, he played very strong, mccolouch plays against 3rd stringers. PS material at best IMO

That Guy 08-29-2004 11:22 AM

mcollough hasn't taken a snap with the first string, and he's a worse version of what portis can do... not only that, portis CAN play every down if needed...
