Vince Young 'hurting inside'
The Associated Press: QB's mother: Titans' Young 'hurting inside'
Poor guy gets booed. The Titans need to focus more on character in the draft, imo. |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I think his Mom needs to keep her trap shut.
But I think there is a legit question, is VY's heart really into playing football?? |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I think the guy really, really wants to be a good Quarterback in this league, but he's pretty much where Campbell is in his devlopment curve, and the expectations are really starting to weigh on him.
It was the Titans who foolishly used the 3rd overall pick in 2006 on Young. They should shoulder the responsibility in this. |

He's had everyone kissing and wiping his hind-quarters for the last 10 yrs because of his superior physical ability. Now he's in the NFL, where everyone is a great athlete and he's got to work hard and use his head more than he's ever had to. I hope he's going to be OK in that he isn't going to hurt himself or someone else. But I don't have sympathy for him as an NFL player with a huge contract. This is how Jeff Fisher should handle it. re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I think the thread title is a bit extreme.
As for Young (and Leinart and Alex Smith), I can't imagine what it must feel like to be in your mid 20's and feel like everything you've worked for practically your entire life is already being seen as a failure and that your career is flatlining. I mean, I'm 32 and I feel like my life and career are just getting started. |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
what a baby... i mean, no offense, but grow up.
he didn't have to enter the draft or sign that contract, but he did - he was a top 3 pick, how could he not expect some negativity if he didn't play well? is he that stupid or naive? didn't the titans catch any of this in the pre-draft? and the mother should know better than to let that out in public... i don't think that's going to help anyone. I imagine this story make life a bit tougher in the locker room too... |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
He is heading straight down Ryan Leaf territory. This to varying degrees is what happens most often when young(no pun) QBs are thrown into action too early. Look at Rodgers. Granted it is a very small sample of playing time but he doesn't seem off his gourd. Playing QBs early is a bad idea. Despite the relatively few examples of success.
|
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
He's only human. I admire that he's willing to consider ending his career in search of happiness.
|
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I'd say his perspective on life is a little 'skewed'. He has alot to be grateful for. Maybe someone will help him see that.
|
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I think it's being overblown. According to reports I've heard over the past few days, he got hurt in the game and was a little bummed out about it according to family. He *gasp* left his house without his cellphone!!! Oh no! The team couldn't find him for a few hours and called the police unnecessarily. He was found at a friend's house watching Monday Night Football and eating food. Oh the humanity. He had an UNLOADED gun in his glove box which he always carries...unloaded. Nothing wrong with that other than a possible need for a permit.
Why are we even reading an article that ends with "But he will be fine if people are prayerful and help my baby boy out. He is a young man. He just needs a lot of love and support." ? Sounds like an overprotective mother more than problems with Vince himself. It's not so newsworthy. All that's wrong is that her "baby boy" has a boo-boo and can't play with his friends for a while. He's not a GREAT QB, but he's far from insane OR Ryan Leaf. Now Mike Vick, there's an insane QB, even before the dogfighting. Flipping off his own fans, making water bottles with false bottoms for the airport... |

Sounds like he's had it his whole life because he's Momma's baby boy. :D |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
The NFL isn't for everyone. Young isn't mentally tough enough to play QB in the NFL. IMO it's the toughest position in sports to play. Only a select few can do it and do it well. It's as simple as that. Plus he's not good enough to consistently make play from the pocket. Floyd Reece blew it on this guy.

But Leinart can play in the NFL. I don't think Alex Smith can. Smith just doesn't have the ability. |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I think he probably is not used to having people boo and jeer him, becuase he has been a superior athlete to those he played with from the pee wee leagues to college. Now on this grand stage, he is under performing for the first time, is being booed and has no idea how to deal with it. I don't think its a matter of him being soft or weak, but he does not have the tools to deal with the situation
|
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
He is just a kid and I can see how this stuff gets tough to take at such a young age. How many QB's have failed because of the preasure and not because of their ability. I say a bunch and a bunch that we don't even know how they where affected by the preasure of the game. People point out that he was picked 3rd in the draft and signed a big contract but that to me even adds more preasure for him to perform. How do we know that our own QB is not getting hit by doupt or his confidence shaken. We just don't know how though it is and I'm not going to pile on a kid when going through this.

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
Young has ability. He's no Patrick Ramsey. :)
If he can just continue to work hard and improve a little every year, he can be a Donovan McNabb-type QB. |

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I don't believe in coddling athletes or feeling particularly sorry for them, but I think Vince deserves a break on this one. He was getting booed, then he went down with what he initially thought was a season ending knee injury...
He has a lot of pressure on him and he's a very young man. Getting booed in the same game where you think you've torn up your knee is pretty rough. I understand why he was upset. He wanted to get away and hang with a friend and didn't want the distraction of his cell phone. Understandable. Give the kid a break. |

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
VY's character has nothing to do with this. I think VY and the Titans are realizing that what made him so good in college doesnt work in the pros. In order to be successful VY is going to have to completely revise the way he plays QB and that isnt going to be easy.
I think what the Titans and other teams need to do is draft QBs who's skill set closely matches what is needed in the pros. The Titans screwed up drafting VY as their franchise QB. |

I like how so many here (and elsewhere) are so quick to cast stones without having any idea of the situation. He could have actual mental health issues or it could be nothing or whatever. Athletes owe you nothing, and just because you think you would like nothing more than to spend one day in their shoes does not give you the right to decry them if they don't want to play for whatever reason. Of course if people on a message board were drawing snap conclusions about a Redskin (Sean Taylor) I'm sure no one here would raise a fuss or anything. Just another example of our cultural obsession with celebrity. |

I don't see VY becoming the passser that McNabb is either. But then again, coming out of college a lot of people had serious doubts about McNabb ever developing into a quality passing QB and he's definitely beaten those odds. |

maybe he needs Michael Lewis and Hank Baskett? this is one of the most ridiculous statements ever made around here. Young can be a fine nfl qback. even maybe as good as Michael Vick. but no way he ever becomes the top 5 QB that Mcnabb is. just not his style |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
How come people say VY does not have the talent to play in the NFL but then hop to another thread supporting JC and think he will be OK.

I agree that Tenn is at fault for not getting better receiving options for VY, but did you see his interceptions on Sunday? I don't care if he has TO, Moss, and Reggie Wayne, those throws were AWFUL. I could have picked those passes off. He throws the kind of INTs that really show he doesn't have much of an ability to see the field and read NFL secondaries. |

By signing his contract he has to accept the responsibility to the Titans that goes along with it and not shut-down the minute things go sideways.
I think VY can be a solid NFL QB, but he needs to get a thicker skin and understand that he's going to need to work very hard at technique and in the filmroom. Hopefully he takes this as a learning experience and comes back a better and more mature player. |

True. But Kerry Collins will is bring some stability to the position and he makes Tenn. offense better. |
re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I don't think Vince Young is insane at all. I just think he needs a hug or a Teddy Bear. TO cried for Tony Romo last year, maybe one of his receivers should cry for him too. I'm going to have my Mom call my office tomorrow to let them know I'm hurting inside and out. Maybe I can score a couple of days off or a softer chair to sit in, cuz damn it I'm tired of being ridiculed too!
Matt Leinart just needs to invite him over for a pool party with some sorority girls from USC. It's not like either of them are going to play any time soon. |

If he wants to let his mommy rock him to sleep and go get a job with zero pressures or responsibility, fine (some days that seems like a pretty good life to me too). But then give back the money he took for the services he no longer wants to provide. And that applies to his endorsements as well. Now, if he tries his best but for whatever reason busts out, then good for him for getting what he could. But quitting because he realized that he has no testicular fortitude? Please. |

SC bringing it as usual. There have been reports for sometime that Young was unhappy and it is very possible he is suffering with clinical depression as a result of the negative scrutiny he has received, or perhaps a million other things. Maybe a friend died. Who knows? But I am stunned by the lack of compassion so many of you seem to have for someone who is suffering, while going through a legitimately tough situation. Mental health is a serious medical issue in this country, a serious drain on productivity at work, and a destroyer of families. As SC said, maybe it is nothing at all; but let's hold off ruthlessly judging someone else until we have all the facts. |

re: Vince Young 'hurting inside'
I'm sorry, but he's spoiled. Look at people like Todd Collins, Arron Rodgers etc. that hang around and hold a clip-board hoping for just a chance. They don't want to play bad, but it could happen. Thier heart is in the game, and they honestly play because it makes them happy. Vince is unhappy because he's playing poorly, and the fans aren't with him. Then again, what fans cheer for a QB that's having problems? Look at what we are doing to JC, and I'm sure he's not on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Go by a new car, suck it the Fu(K up, or rub some dirt on it, walk it off.....do something and get your butt back to playing ball. Here's a hint.....people will like you more if you try to throw the ball to your players....just a hint. |
