Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty, a new book by Jeff Pearlman
From Publishers Weekly In his latest effort, Pearlman (The Bad Guys Won!) tells the story of how the Dallas Cowboys went from being a league doormat to a Super Bowl–winning machine. It's the cast of characters that makes this story a page-turner, starting with controlling owner Jerry Jones; all-business coach Jimmy Johnson, who would cut a player without blinking; and star players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders. Pearlman explores the many other people who bought into the philosophy that if you were going to be a Dallas Cowboy... you needed to live the life—and that meant, in the early '90s, plenty of infidelity, cocaine, nightly trips to gentleman's clubs and hangovers at practice. Pearlman interviewed nearly 150 members of the Cowboys organization for the book, but much of the terrific detail comes from such tangential folks as journalists, players' wives and staff at the local Cowboys restaurant. The anecdotes range from uplifting (the heartwarming story of quarterback Troy Aikman granting a wish to a dying boy) to raunchy (defensive end Chris Haley, while playing for the 49ers, often masturbated in the locker room). In the end, Pearlman has produced a narrative that is as entertaining as it is insightful. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Has anyone checked this out yet? I caught an interview on the radio w/ the author and it sounds like a pretty good read for redskin fans. A couple of points he made: Nobody liked Emmitt Smith as he was a complete ass. He wouldn't sign an autograph for a teammates own mother, by saying if I sign this for your f****** mom I'll have to sign one for everyone's f****** mom. Michael Irvin slit a players throat w/ a pair of barber's scissors in a locker room fight over "seniority." This was covered up by the team during Irvin's probationary period. Oh yeah, lot's of drugs and women. I might have to check this one out. It doesn't seem to paint such a great picture about those loveable cowboys. Too funny. |

why the hell would you masturbate in a locker room?

I think the answer to that is pretty obvious. And disgusting... (not that there's anything wrong with that.) |
Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
Gotta love them Cowboys..... What a joke!
|
Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
I'm surprised the cowgirls could even have a huddle. From what I understand, convicted felons are'nt suppose to associate with other convicted felons.

Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
Yeah this book sounds great. I am dying to pick it up. Sounds like Charles Haley really steals the show.

Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
Starring Michael Irvin as Edward Scissorhands. I can't believe he didn't do time for the stabbing.

i'll wait for it to come out on toilet paper so i can wipe my a$$ with it!!!

I wouldn't be too rough. There were Redskins that couldn't even read. Every team has dark moments in their closet. That's just how it is. The Cowboys have certainly had their fair share. But I bet people around here would be crying and whining if there were something showing this same type of material about the Redskins. All in all I find the concept pretty interesting. I always wonder what happens behind closed doors with NFL teams.

Slitting someone's throat and whipping out and wacking your wang in a locker room aren't in the same ballpark as illiteracy, but I get your point. |
Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
Everyone should read this. If you didn't hate the Cowboys or Michael Irvin before, you will after reading that article.

Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
That was a pretty unusual comparison.

You got nothing on the Redskins. We're boring. Our last great National Enquirer moment came courtesy of Joe Theismann ditching his family to get hot with Cathy Lee. |

I don't think it's that simple Daseal. The culture that Gibbs instilled - in the 80's and to perhaps a larger extent in his second term - was one of responsibility and character. To be sure, people slipped, but there was a conscientious effort from the top down to build a team of solid citizens. The Cowboys, on the other hand, have only ever cared about winning, character be damned. From there drug-addled teams in the 70's, to the aformentioned Johnson era teams, to today where that criminal madman Pacman runs around their stadium. Me? I'd rather win a superbowl with crooks than suck with choir boys, but I certainly respect what Gibbs did. I definitely think there's a world of difference between the culture of the Skins and the culture down in Dallas. |
Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
did anybody who posted after the sheriff read the article? I mean,WTF!!!!!!! How did he get away with it? what a massive frickin coverup must have taken place,Everett McIver must have been paid off big time not to press charges

Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
well apparently,700,000 would do it
The Ringmaster of the Media Circus By Skip Hollandworth "He told me that if I didn't change my testimony, he would put everybody against me and everybody would hate me. He said that he'd make a touchdown and everyone would love him again." There was a long silence. Irvin dropped his head... Click here to read the WHOLE story I can't wait 'till $&!@$ halftime! ...I gotta go NOW!!! The untold story of: Irvin has another bad day on the field ...can you say "withdrawal?" ...Cocaine boy has a relapse, fumbles, and helps his team lose to the Giants in '97 Michael Scissorhands Seems like Michael Irvin's in trouble again. On July 29th at training camp in Wichita Falls, Texas, Michael Irvin sliced a 2" cut in guard Everett McIver's neck which required 18 stitches. Irvin and McIver apparently got into an argument over which of the two would get their hair cut first. Irvin had a pair of barber's scissors in his hands and during the tussle that ensued sliced McIver's neck. The Dallas Morning News then stated that in 2 meetings with McIver's agent, Stephen Hayes, Jerry Jones brokered a $700,000 settlement in which Irvin paid McIver not to bring criminal charges, which would violate Irvin's parole for his '96 felony conviction of cocaine possession. After the incident McIver was immediately taken to his home in Dallas with no comment to reporters and Cowboy players were instructed not to speak about the incident to anyone. Officials at Midwestern State University (where the Cowboys hold their training camp) tried to investigate the incident but were told to back off by the Cowboys who stated that "this was their problem and they would deal with it." Several weeks after the incident the Cowboys made the announcement that Irvin was holding the scissors that accidentally cut McIver. However, it was an act of horseplay and that there was no argument or fight and the cut was a result of an accident, not from malicious intent on Irvin's part. That $700,000 lie just saved Irvin up to 20 years in prison - again. The Cowboys must really think they need Irvin to put up with all his crap. |

I'm a skins fan, but i also find it interesting, disgusting, and inhumane at some of the antics of some of the Cowboys teams. I'm not niave enough to believe the the Skins players are Saints themselves but I do think that we've always tried to place some emphasis on character, especially in the Gibbs years. So, I'd rather lose than to have an Adam Jones on my team. |
Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
the nfl had to know about the irvin incident, and it would'nt surprise me in the least,if they helped cover it up.how many of the owners knew about it? i sure as hell bet some of them did.i know that the redskins have'nt been choir and altar boys through the years, but i can't ever see gibbs, pardee, allen, zorn, beathard, casserley,or anybody else from the redskins ever taking stupidity and lawlessness to this level.i wish the dallas attorney general would slap an obstruction of justice charge on jerry jones for it.
now i see why dallas was south america's team!!!! |

I would read this book in a heart beat. It's good sutff, particularly if you're a football fan. And let's not kid ourselves. For every Charles Mann, Monte Coleman, Darrell Green, Art Monk and Tim Johnson...we had Tony Peters, Barry Wilburn, Dexter Manley, Michael Westbrook, George Rogers, Timmy Smith and so on. The Redskins had plenty of guys that were just as bad. Our beloved Joe Thiesmann was banging Cathy Lee Crosby in his hotel room during the SB week when we got our asses handed to us by the Raiders. At the time Joe was married and I believe he got caught in the act. That never made it to the press but it's a true story. Doc Walker all but confirmed it on the radio last year. |

Sickening. Jerry Jones covering it up is even more sickening. What makes it worse, that PoS Irvin was inducted to the HoF.....before Art Monk. Most people thought it was fun-n-games when Irvin was getting booed at the HoF induction this year. It wasn't fun-n-games to me, I already couldn't stand that SOB. I knew of the incident but not all the details. Makes every boo I yelled at Irvin worth that much more. |

No really different. I get a kick out of guys saying how terrible this is when they would give anything to to be on a championship team, knowing you are great, running with the guys, and having a great time no matter what mayhem you cause. Jealousy is an interesting thing. |

It just seems like we hear alot more about drug issues w/ the Cowboys than other teams. If I had the time I'd do some research...maybe I'm wrong. I just don't remember seeing any throat slitting, cocaine possession-probation, coverup, perjury related things on the Redskins lately....or ever. Maybe I'm off base. |

Re: Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty
what really pisses me off about this is the fact that irvin was voted into the HOF before any of this shit got out.players cheating on their wives and doing dope some is bad,but not as bad as doing that 24/7 during the season, stabbing a teammate, and then have the owner covering the whole thing up.that's not to mention the withdrawals he had to be undergoing during the game.if that happened during a game,he could have easily died himself.the league needs to investigate this as much or more than they did all that bullshit last year with the pats cheating.makes me hate dallas ever worse than i ever did, even in the george allen era....

So, do you think (a) that people who have affairs should be sentenced to years in prison, or (b) that people who slit throats should get no jail time? Because, if the two acts aren't really distinguishable, you should believe either a or b. I know you think you are the purveyor of truth and the rest of us are blind, dumb, homers, but your perception of the Redskins and Redskins fans is downright comical. You and those blind homers are two sides of the same coin. |
