Rfk 2
Pretty exciting talk! I think everyone here would love to see it happen. Hopefully within the next 5 years?

Re: Rfk 2
I guess this is one thing a young Mayor brings with him. I dont think DC has any term restrictions on Mayors so as long as he can keep office maybe this will be somthing he continues to push for.
|
Re: Rfk 2
They've been talking about this for a while now. While the Skins own the stadium, I believe they have a land lease with Maryland that is extensive, and would be quite expensive to get out of. It also doesn't hurt that this talk comes up when the Skins are 4-1 and on a roll right now...

Re: Rfk 2
RFK Memorial Stadium, or Gibbs Field. I think it's hella fitting. Joe Gibbs needs to be enshrined.

i agree.if not gibbs maybe jack kent cooke.anybody think that this is a direct result of jerry jones opening what will be the league's biggest stadium next season in dallas? |
Re: Rfk 2
anybody think that this is a direct result of
jerry jones opening what will be the league's biggest stadium next season in dallas?
Nope. Snyder has been talking about building a stadium in DC that can host a Super Bowl for years now...it's just a matter of money and logistics. |
Re: Rfk 2
i never heard about him building another stadium but i did hear about him thinking of putting a roof on fed ex field to host a superbowl. i hope that the new stadium has a retracktable roof on it.i hate to think of the skins home games being inside all the time.

It may not be the direct result of, but I think it bring renewed importance to the issue |

Im thinking they want to try to get a bowl game too. I dont know how possible that is though. The fact it says DC would try to work somehting out so we could use the land for free, and there is likely some good appreaciation of the Landover land value, i think makes it a real possability. |

I'd probably cost far too much to retrofit a roof. At least relative what it would cost to just build a new stadium. I thought(i could totally be wrong) that Fenty basically got elected, and ran Tony Williams out of town, based on the platform that DC shouldn't have paid so much for the baseball stadium? This will certainly cost way more. |
Re: Rfk 2
It's inevitable that the Danny will build a new mega stadium with a retractable roof at some point in the future.
|
Re: Rfk 2
no disrespect to the nationals, but i would have tried and built the redskins a new stadium
with a roof than a new stadium just for the nationals.the redskins are the life blood of dc, all the other pro sports teams are way,way back when it comes to being the most popular team from there.the nationals are gonna stink for eternity 10 years,so are the wizards and they don't sell out years in advance like the skins do. |

The Wiz have made the playoffs 4 yrs in a row, so they're not bad. The Nationals just need to put a good product on the field...decent product on the field. I went to a Nats game this year and enjoyed it. It's a good area, close to the metro, hotels and it looks like there's alot of development in that specific area. They just need to start winning some games. They need to be on a 4-5 year plan. |
Re: Rfk 2
The Lerners will start to open their wallets here soon. Stan Kasten is no dummy when it comes to building franchises, and that stadium will be full once they turn it around.
As far as the city is concerned, I really don't see them forking over money to help build the stadium...providing the land is one thing, but it won't be Nationals Park Part Deux. |
Re: Rfk 2
I think a big difference from the Nationals vs the Redskins is that DC had no baseball team before so it needed a much greater corrdinated effort to get a team here. You have to have city and initial tax payer support to get a new team.
Moving team back from a few miles away is different. Its more that the Redskins are allready making money could they make more via a new city stadium. Plus a owner that wants them back where they belong is good. And the city would greatly benefit. |
Re: Rfk 2
Where's Giantone to lecture us on how this is never going to happen?
|
Re: Rfk 2
Snyder inherited FedEx, and not too put it down since I love it, but it isin't really that hot fire... And, Snyder is going to own this team for a long time, and he wants to make his own stadium, that is bigger and badder then the new Dallas stadium, as well as the ability to host a Super Bowl. End of discussion!
|
Re: Rfk 2
Just thinking. We have a lease?? Who are we leasing the fed ex from? I thought Cooke built it and and Snyder bought it with the team.

Agreed but not for at least another 10 years. That's how long they have left on the agrement with P.G county( I thought it was a 20 or 25 year deal). With all the moneyPG has spent with infrastucture..the beltway,Metro, and other upgrades....nope not for awhile. Remember he only bought Fed Ex ...he did'nt build it ,by the time he can build in DC it will cost almost 2 Billion...hell the Giants new place is about 1.75......nope no time soon. |

Fenty can't give away any property, money .....belive it or not Danny does'nt have enough right now to buy out of the FedEx deal in PG and build new in DC to keep the majority ownership....Six Flags has 'nt been kind. Will it happen, yeah it will but much futher down the road. |
Re: Rfk 2
how much would it cost him to get out of his lease?i'm not doubting you,but if he wants to make a new stadium happen,he'll find a way to make it happen.
next season when the giants move, are they taking the jets with them? and is the new stadium going to be in new york or jersey? |
Re: Rfk 2
Please God let this happen.
It's the WASHINGTON Redskins, not the Ghetto Maryland Redskins. |
Re: Rfk 2
The effort to build the new stadium will become serious the moment Jerry Jones' new stadium becomes the biggest in the NFL next year. Dan and Jerry maybe good friends, but they are extremely competitive and Dan won't be able to handle Dallas having the bigger stadium....

Danny is just a tad over exstended right now as I said Six Flags is killing him and after thids week on wall st who knows who can aford anything?YES it will happen we all know it .....just a little bit down the road ,that's all. |

There are ghettos and sh*tholes everywhere. I'll take D.C. instead of Landover. |
Re: Rfk 2
The big question is how many more yrs do the Skins have on their lease in MD? If it's not long I'm sure a bidding war will begin and that benefits Snyder. If MD is not interested in keeping the Skins which I doubt then DC could put any price on a stadium.

No roof but depending on who is playing it will change color,Blue Giants ,Green Jets. |

I don't know if you can call it a lease. It was a deal between the 2 to cover infrastucture by the added tax base and the forcast of how long it would take to pay for the things, also what do you do with and empty NFL stadium that holds 90 thoudsand people. The whole complex has been built around that stadium, home values ....nope they can't just pullout. |

do you think the skins/giants,giants/eagles,or cowboys/giants will play the first ever regular season game there? my money is on giants/eagles. |

what about Jets/Giants? don't know if that year is the AFC East/NFC East year. |

if they follow the skins schedule,i don't think they will play a regular season game until 2011.i don't know if they could request to play each other or not, but that's certainly something i'm sure both teams would explore.i hope that next season that the skins/cowboys won't play the 1st regular season game ever at the new texas stadium though, but it would'nt surprise me if they did. |

I agree with you but when Snyder wants something he makes it happen. MD could use it for concerts, DC soccer..United, or any number of other things. They might have to do some reconstruction though.or tear it down and put some thing nice on it like a park for the public or turn it into a mall.LOL. |

To big for DC United and there is a brand New Mall across the Beltway(part of the rebuilding of the area) also as part of the original deal there is a sports complex for the kids sitting right be side FedEX.I thought about University of Maryland but they just re did theit stadium am and could not afford to buy anything or keep it up,the Danny would need to sell yet the value is in the Stadium, so you can't tear it down. |
Re: Rfk 2
it maybe 10 years, but a new stadium in dc will happen.what about the naming rights to fed ex field?were'nt the like 200 million for 20 years?

Last Nats game I attended, a few months back, filled half the stadium. Out of that half, a quarter left before the 7th inning - and the Nats were WINNING! crap like this kills me that skins fans have to schlep out to maryland. |
