Redskins Add New Punter
Figured this merited its own thread
Ryan Plackemeier Is The Skins' New Punter - Redskins Insider Lots of Seahawks flocking to Redskins Park today |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Well he should be far more consistent than Brooks.
Years ago we were the Washington Jetskins, now we're turing into the Washington Redhawks |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
And a new safety, Michael Green.
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Oh Durant Brooks, we hardly knew ye.
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
What a waste of a friggin' 6th round draft pick.
Thanks VC. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Waste of a draft pick, Please. We've seen in the past 3rd and 4th rounders not make the roster or stay around for a year. They took a chance on what was suppose to be the best punter talent in the draft and it hasn't worked out so far.

Exactly! Its not the end of the world when a 6th round draft pick doesn't work out. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
So you don't consider it a waste when the PUNTER we drafted doesn't make it half way through the season?
Hell, it was a waste to draft him, let alone draft and cut him. You don't agree? |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
You got to wonder if Derek Frost isn't laughing his butt off.
Brooks will pan out in the long run, but he has a long way to go. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Why did we sign this punter to a two year deal?
|

I have to disagree. Brooks most likely would've went undrafted and I thought he could've been had as an UDFA instead of spending a 6th rounder on him. If memory serves me right Brooks was the only punter drafted this year. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
a waste...where's good ol' Chip L.
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
This guy is a horse compared to Brooks. 6'3" 252Lbs and also a Ray Guy award winner in 2005. We'll see.
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
heard steve largent was coming in for a try out tommorow.

Hell, it was a waste to draft him, let alone draft and cut him. You don't agree?
Considering it was in the 6th round, no. Think about it, how many 6th round picks pan out? Let alone punters? Was it waste? Maybe.....but we hear about 6th rounders getting cut all the time. When the Broncos spent a 3rd round pick on Maurice Clarett.....thats what you call a waste. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Are we putting Brooks on IR or outright releasing him?
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Sure, there are different degrees of waste, but a waste none the less.
Still stupid to pick up someone who would have been on the open market after the draft. Will it really matter? No. It's more of a shot at VC. I'll get over it. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
I find it hard to call a 6th or 7th rounder a waste. Those are the type of picks you can gamble with.
Horton hasn't turned out too bad eh? I think that cancels out any "waste" factor with Brooks. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Gamble on a position other then Punter.
|

Well if read correctlywe signed this new guy to a two year deal so I think that means the door for Brooks. I think there is more to this story then just Brooks performance on the field. didn't he smart off to Shushis (I can't get his name right) maybe he has rubbed others wrong. |

I agree. We could've, most likely, got Brooks as an UDFA. Why not draft someone else in the 6th? As we know all to well with this team draft picks are at a minimum and we have to try to make the most out of every selection. Who knows we could've uncovered another gem like Horton with Brooks selection we'll never know. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
You guys are bitching about a 6th rounder that didn't pan out but not complaining about two second rounders that have hardley seen action. What say you about that?
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
I say you got the makings of a new thread.
"Rookie Wide Receiver Busts?" |

yeah I don't think Frost is in the position to be laughing at anyone |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Yeah, Frost is not laughing...he's about to get cut by Green Bay, too.
Brooks was a waste of a pick, but not a high pick, so the waste was limited. In VC's defense (a position I don't always occupy), if Brooks had panned out, it would have been great. An excellent punter is a real weapon when it comes to the field position game. It is a shame that Brooks was a gamble lost. And yes, we might have been able to sign him for free without losing a draft choice, but someone else may have scooped up the Ray Guy award winner first. |

Thomas is at least seeing some playing time. Kelly has been injured, not much to say there. Neither of those guys are killing us on the field the way Brooks was. |

This is where Vinny's holy draft board comes into play :D But with all due respect to Vinny he did a pretty good job with Colt, Rhinehart, and Horton and I'm more then willing to give the 3 second rounders a little more time. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
Given how solid this year's draft is looking from top to bottom I don't know how you are going to complain about one guy not working out.
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
I wonder if Dallas will pick him up and he avgs 50yds. that would really suck
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
JESUS! What a WASTE of a 6th rounder!!!!!
OMG THEY SHOULD FIRE VINNY!!!! Just joking (actually not about the firing Vinny part ;)) - to be honest this was a risk they took and it didn't pan out. The draft is all about risk - I'm sure this kid had a huge leg when they looked at him on the practice field but it sometimes just doesn't translate. Thankfully, a 6th round pick is more or less worthless and it seems like they picked up a comparable talent off the street. |

I have that feeling too. He might have been a bit of a smartass. Anyway I don't see anything wrong with taking a chance with a 6th round pick on someone who might've become one of the best at their position. It did'nt work out. Whoopty -doo. A lot of 6th rounders don't work out. Given his creditials he looked like a good pick. I believe he led the nation in punting and won the Ray Guy award. AND it was a position of need. It's not like taking Heath Shuler or Desmond Howard in the 1rst round. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
so, who is gonna hold for field goals and the extra point. i'd like to see campbell doing it but he prolly wont.
|

Chip was a kicker, not a punter. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
I remember Danny Wuerfel or whatever his name doing a kick off once. Maybe he's interested?
|
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
does it count as irony to say VC's decision to draft a punter in the 6th round was terrible, and especially because VC really should have drafted someone(to be named later) because then VC would have proven how smart he was...
Please it was a 6th round choice, probably 75% or more have already been cut. |

I was wondering that too -- how about Randle El? That would make opposing ST coaches piss their pants. |

I know this is a punter thread, but I gotta disagree. Kelly was initially projected as a mid to possibly top 10 1st round pick. Yes he had one slow 40 time that hurt his stock, but his biggest red-flag all along was knee issues. And since we drafted him, he's had that same knee operated on and subsequently drained at least twice. He's contributed zero because of a pre-existing issue we were well aware of when choosing him. He's not killing us on the field because he can't manage to get into uniform come Sundays. Sure we can't label this a bust yet, but it has all the early makings of an awful pick in my opinion. As far as Brooks, two tears in a bucket. I agree that we should have used a 6th round pick elsewhere and signed him as UDFA, but whatever. |
Re: Redskins Add New Punter
I thought that it would take some painful time to replace #21. Horton is not the same as 21, of course, but happily he proved me wrong about the pain.
