Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Jon Jansen Let's not kid ourselves. If Samuels wasn't hurt you would have been benched by halftime (if not sooner). Those penalties, especially on the first half, are inexcusable. The senior member of our team should not be the most undisciplined. And recovering the fumble only slightly makes up for your mental gaffes
Jason Campbell As a passing QB, you had a great game. I love you how you evaded the rush on the TD pass to Moss. But you gotta watch those fumbles, there have been too many lately. Don't go all Dave Krieg on us Antwaan Randle El Did you see what Moss did on the punt return? Yeah, just give us even 30% of that and we'd be in much better shape |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Jansen's facemask penalty was horseshit! I don't think he touched the facemask at all.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Not JC dude, that should have been Heyer he kept letting people blew by him. JC doesnt have eyes in the back of his head. Heyer looked god awful yesterday.
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
The facemask on Jansen was a horrible call, just horrible.
I can't even get mad at JC for the fumbles. The protection on the left side was pretty bad, and he more than made up for it with his overall performance. My only gripe, we need more points. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Damn frickin' mistakes. For weeks now we've been doing this. Dumb penalties or turnovers at the worst possible times. Hell we BEAT the Rams everywhere except the score(due to mistakes). Cleveland played us a little better but Detroit looked like crap and we kept it close because of mistakes again. We're not getting outplayed in effort, gameplan or execution. We just keep making individual stupid or bad plays at the exact worst possible time. It has to stop. Focus has to be regained.

JJ's phantom facemask call was horrible. It didn't look like on on super slow mo much less normal time. Heyer had a horrible game. I guess we can cut him a little slack having to move over to LT. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
I will say the facemask call was total bs. That may have been a 5 yarder last year but did not deserve a call.
There is something missing in the offense. It seems like if you finish 23-28 (2 of which I know were caught out of bounds) passing and over 400 yards, you should put up 30+ points. Penalties have a lot to do with that but its been an underlying theme. We dominate yardage and time of posession but that doesn't reflect where it counts the most; on the scoreboard. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
It's not red zone worries for me, it's still the "orange zone". All these plays in opposing team's territory and we just seem to stall every time.

Agreed, and that statement has to be my biggest overall beef of the entire season. How many times has a drive been killed or points taken off the board because of stupid, unnecessary penalties this season? That seems to be the only thing that stops this team, and it's a big reason why other teams are able to occasionally gain some momentum against them. |

Not to go on a ref tirade but why the hell wasnt the play whistled dead as "offsides unabetted to the qb" when that lion jump offsides on the left side and had a clear path to JC? if jc didnt avoid him and he got sacked i would have blown a gasket. atleast the league has cut down on these 60 yard PI calls where the contact is slight and mutual. they relized just because a receiver falls down and there was some touching it doesnt deserve 60 yards and be a game changing play. those PI calls changed games, havent seen many questionable long PI calls this year. ok tirade/rant over. sorry fellas inconsistent officiating really irks me like a home plate ump with a changing strike zone. call the strike zone consistently early in the game and the players will adjust and rely on it. go skins!! |

Does anybody know how many penalties we had that cost us 1st downs!?? If had not committed so may penalties, we would have had the blow-out we all expected. |

Ummm.... Jason Campbell was 23-of-28 for a season-high 328 yards with a touchdown and a career-high 127.4 passer rating! Its ok Smootsmack....I LOVE HIM TOO! |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
^Yea i think zorn gave that ref a little piece of his mind after the play wasn't blown dead when it was an obvious offsides and flags were thrown. What if that would've ended JC's game or season, or worse? Saying "sorry, my fault" makes up for a lot of things but not when it's at the expense of someone else's health, and that goes for anybody not just JC. The refs this year need a swift kick in the arse if you ask me.
p.s. I can't believe I'm complaining this much about the refs when the skins actually have a winning record, but I call it like I see it and it is what it is. |

Actually, it was a subtle subliminal message to you big boy ;) yes...freudian slip. I don't want to tell JC I love him...becuase I don't know how I'll react if I don't hear it back :) |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Both Jansen and Heyer had subpar performances yesterday. I'd give Heyer a very small pass for the fact that he hasn't played in a few weeks, and then when he comes back, is thrown in on the other side of the ball. But both certainly need to step it up against the Steelers next Sunday night.
Coach Zorn, do us a favor. Do not go for a 2 point conversion unless the Skins are behind and need to close the gap. While the Lions aren't a juggernaut, they had the opportunity to tie the game late because of your choice to go for 2 when it wasn't completely necessary. I do realize that coaches have a chart that tells them whether or not to go for 2...sometimes common sense trumps charts and graphs. Maybe ARE needs Devin Thomas to run into him while returning punts? That seems to be key in opening up the lanes... |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Someone also tell Suisham that he DOESN'T HAVET TO MISS 1 FG / game.
I never saw the game. Will Samuels be back next week? what about any other injuries any updates on them? Need to cut the penalties out all together. Illegal Contact has declined on defenders only because Devin Thomas decided he would take them when hes on the field. |

What is it with our rookies trying to tackle our returners?

His one miss against the Lions came on a day in which he nailed four others, three from 40+ yards. He's not perfect, but he's not a guy that I'm inclined to call out. |

He does have a long of 50 this year, but there aren't too many outdoor kickers who routinely hit all of their 50+ yard attempts. |
Jansen's facemask penalty was horseshit! I don't think he touched the facemask at all.
I mentioned this earlier, and it bears repeating - the competition committe should change the rule and allow facemask to be reviewable if the offending team feels that the officials blew it. On more than one occasion this year, I've seen a facemask called when it was never touched. 15 yards is a harsh penalty for an instance when the official blows the call.

You save the 2-pointer until the end of the game, say within the final five minutes. Most of the 4th quarter was still remaining when we went for it. That one point which we gave up could have been big, given that the margin of victory was 8. |

My only concern is that JC can't go with no backs to help block him. IF Zorny does go no back, he better put an extra TE in their at least. JC got destroyed during the last fumble. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
I've been thinking that the Redskins need to start practicing for penalities. Obviously prevention isn't working and everytime we get a penalty (even if it's just a 5 yard false start) we fail to recover. I can't think of one time this year where we converted for a first after a penalty. I guess the best thing to do would be to call back plays in practice and give the offense a goal. Maybe they're doing this already, of course I don't know what goes on at Redskin Park, but at the very least if we're going to get these penalties we have to learn how to recover. You can't just lay down and die because you lost five yards.

However how in the world did you get tickets to a Lions game? Just kidding of course I agree based on the crappy streaming quality on my end that the call on Jansen was bull. Of course later when they called two straight penalties on Gosder Cherilus I kept on thinking man thats unfair that they're picking on the guy, damn refs (yes I realize he's on the other team but if it can happen to them it can happen to us). Of course after seeing the replay I could see that those were two of the ugliest cases of holding that I had ever seen. |

It happened yesterday and I'm sure this isn't the only time this year. Though I really wish they would do a better job of getting back on their feet after these setbacks especially if we're going to get these penalities anyway. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Gotta lay the smack on Alexander. When Portis is getting his headgear fixed and then fighting with coach, backup must produce! I have always thought he was overrated but we could have stuck Durant Brooks in the backfield and gotten the same production. Shaun Alexander, hit the hole or donate your check and go home.
Other than that, Jansen got screwed. Not only was his penalty complete crap (the personal foul not the holding that was his fault) but nobody even mentions how the left side was fodder for the run while the right stayed strong. Heyer is a great pass blocker but the reason he wasn't drafted is his run grading. Unless Buges can teach him, he will never be a complete tackle. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
Let's not forget, Stephon Heyer is a right tackle. Not a left tackle. There is a difference.
Backup/future star at left tackle has to be a priority in next year's draft. I just wish we had that second round pick back for Jason Taylor. It's becoming more and more apparent that we would have been just fine without him. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs Lions)
The refs in this game were all homers, I saw that from the get-go. We did have a couple of penalties go our way, but they were pretty blatant.
