Lions sign Daunte Culpepper to a two year deal

I guess when your desperate you'll try anything. This will be the end for DC for sure, bad move on his part to sign with this club IMO. But then again I guess no other team was beating his door down.

the DC story unfortunately happens in the NFL; you go from being a top qb, on the cover of madden to a journeyman "washed up" has been in a new york minute . . . . What was DC's achillies heal? his inaccuracy on short throws, did he have an injury that prevented him from throwing that great long ball or did moss n carter make him look that good?

seems like a nice, down to earth guy; never heard him shooting his mouth (like p rivers) so im happy he did get one big pay day.

just one of those "who would have thought this would happen 5 years ago" stories . . .or more like 7 years ago.

go skins!!

Re: Lions sign Daunte Culpepper to a two year deal

IF DC slimmed down a bit and the knee is truly rehabilitated maybe he can make some things happen, but I wouldn't even bother playing him this season unless Orlovsky goes down. Drew Stanton isn't ready yet to take the helm, and DC might be able to get a starting job back if he gets the chance. Detroit is a mess, so anything they can do at this point is a positive. The Lions need to build an offensiive line and a good strong back that can handle the load. Kevin Smith isnt the answer, just like Kevin Jones wasn't, but a lot of it comes down to the offensive line in Detroit. It is sort of like us with our weak pass rush all these seasons.

It's amazing how much one injury changes everything, after Miami and Oakland, was he anywhere else?

Re: Lions sign Daunte Culpepper to a two year deal

A big problem with DC is that he is his own agent and he overvalues his worth.
I think this is probably a one and down deal even though it is technically a 2 year. The new Lions GM is gonna have to overhaul the whole team Why would anyone taking that job want Culpepper to try to build around?

this signing is a desperation signing to show their fans that they are willing to brin in a (useless washed up) star. They need to realize that they have a god-awful team, and should start, instead, working to fix that long term.

This move makes very little sense, but then again it's the Lions we're talking about.

Why? He's better than anyone they currently have. He needs to get his weight down and get a full off season under his belt. I'm sure Det. is going to bring in some more QB's this off season. If anything he can be a good backup.

Because they have a couple of young QB prospects and they don't even know what they have in those guys yet. This is a team that needs to rebuild, bringing in a washed up QB doesn't really help accomplish anything. It's a band-aid move for a team that needs a full body cast.

Its still not offical he still has to pass some type of physical testing.

Orlovsky has quietly done very well since taking over for Kitna. I don't think Culpepper can get onto the field this year, and there's a chance that he doesn't even make the roster under a new regime.

Maybe they should give Trent Dilfer a call.

They used a 2nd round pick on Drew Stanton last year. I'm surprised they haven't even given him a look. They've got nothing to lose. Might as well see what the kid has got.

He won't play backup.

Re: Lions sign Daunte Culpepper to a two year deal

Desperate times call for desperate measures...with a move like this, it's obvious that Orlovsky and Stanton were Millen's guys, not Marinelli. At this point, 0-8 and the last defeated team in the league, play the young guys and keep that #1 pick in tow.

However, if by some miracle Daunte is ready to roll, his strong arm can open the offense up...visions of Culpepper/Moss connections with Calvin Johnson being on the receiving end of the Daunte Shuffle more than once.

GTripp0012 11-03-2008 01:47 PM

Re: Lions sign Daunte Culpepper to a two year deal

Orlovsky was a Mooch guy, I believe. With a relatively weak QB draft class coming this year leading up to a monstrously talented class in 2010, Detroit may not be in a good position in the draft to pull in a QB of the future. I mean, if a junior like Colt McCoy (who has started 35+ college games) comes out, it changes a lot of things, but the two first round QBs right now have to be Graham Harrell and John Parker Wilson, and the Lions might as well try to move into the future with either Orlovsky or Culpepper.

Stanton's probably not going to get a serious chance, but the guy can't stay healthy so it's hard to argue that he's been screwed.

DC= In game, live, tackling dummy until the oline gets good enough to protect the younger prospects.

SURGERY FOR ORLOVSKY?
Posted by Mike Florio on November 7, 2008, 9:47 p.m.

Originally reported as a sprain, it turns out that Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky might need surgery for two fractures and a torn ligament.

It’s unknown when or if Orlovsky will return this year. It’s also unknown whether second-year quarterback Drew Stanton of newcomer Daunte Culpepper will take the snaps on Sunday against the Jaguars.

Stanton spent most of 2007 on injured reserve, and has yet to appear in a regular-season game. In contrast, Culpepper has been with the team only four days.
