Fantasy Football Tips

I know there are some fantasy football nuts out there besides myself. My question to the forum is: what websites do you use that you find to be the most helpful in your research, especially in who to start/bench each week and injury updates?

I'm talking about free sites - not those millions of websites where you have to pay $$ every month or for the season just to access their sites.

I know there are some gems out there - so please share them with us.

Right now, I use three sites - but know that there are more out there:

I was going to suggest fanball but I see you already have it

joecrisp 09-08-2004 08:42 AM

Yahoo! is nice too, since they pool all the updates from fanball, STATS Inc, and KFFL, which are some of the top fantasy update sites. That's one of the things I really like about doing our leagues with Yahoo!.

The sites you listed are as good as any I have found. Each year I play the more and more I rely mainly on my own tools mainly with just the internet sites augmenting them. What kind of tools do you use to draft? Do you just buy a magazine and use their list or do you put together you own list with some type of analytical work involved? By the way I'd love to get a good discussion going on how everyone drafts and makes decisions. I bet we get 100 different ways and it is always good to hear what others are doing.

Daseal 09-08-2004 08:48 AM

I always make my own list, but I do buy a magazine more for depth charts, schedules, etc for the season. Helps if you're in a crunch to get that information quickly.

MTK 09-08-2004 08:54 AM

I buy one mag, Fantasy Football Index. I read the thing cover to cover and I receive the daily fanball updates to stay on top of injuries, position battles, etc. That's about the extent of my draft prep, I don't really make a list anymore, but in my head I know what I like to do and I pretty much go from the gut. That can be good and bad.

These are the pillars of my draft theory:

Pillar 1: Draft RB's early - no shit!
Pillar 2: I always draft at least one Redskin and never a Cowboy - I don't care if Ladanian gets traded to Dallas and I have the first pick. (by the way, this habit of drafting redskins has hurt me in the past few years).
Pillar 3: Draft a sleeper in Round 5 or 6.
Pillar 4: Pick one rookie - only one!
Pillar 5: Never draft a WR if he's the only draftable WR on his team.
Pillar 6: Never draft a player with a girl's name (exception - Shannon Sharpe).

FRPLG 09-08-2004 09:13 AM

Fantasy Football Index is absolutely the mag to go with. No even a close race. I have used it the last three years and I always finish top three. Sorta makes me the Eagles of fantasy footbal since I have never won a Superbowl in any of my leagues. I have finished 1st in three leagues and lost in the playofffs each time.

FRPLG 09-08-2004 09:14 AM

Does anyone here do projections??? How do you go about it? I do some but I am always looking to improve my methods.

I keep my heart out of FF. I'll take 'Skins as long as they are worthy, and I won't shy away from taking Cowboys.

One year I took a bunch of Skins and it actually paid off. It was in '99 and I drafted BJ, Davis and Westbrook all as backups. I also took E. James as a rookie and with him and Davis I cruised to the league title. BJ and Westbrook also worked out very well too.

I keep my heart out when it comes to picking Redskins. But I can never bring myself to start a player if his team is going up against the Redskins that week-unless my season is on the line.

I'm usually against picking many players from the same team, but it paid off for me a couple of years ago when, in an autodraft, I got Holmes, T. Green and Gonzo

Ade Jimoh Fan Club 09-08-2004 11:09 AM

I know that keeping your "heart out of it" is always good advice for building a successful fantasy team - but I feel stronger about the Skins than I do about fantasy football. I'd rather see the Skins win than my fantasy team. So I do allow a little bias to float in. But if the Skins have a big year - and they will eventually - then it'll be a double-whammy.

I also don't like to start players against the Skins - it's not fun to cheer for a player to do well against us!

i like using http://www.fftoday.com/index.html. ... try this one as well

they have clinton as the #6 back

MTK 09-08-2004 01:56 PM

I try to not start guys against the Skins too, but sometimes you've gotta do it, especially if you're talking about one of your big time stars.

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 02:03 PM

yea I have a hard time playing peopel against the skins, but Im not going to bench moss, mcnabb, or toomer this year, because they are some of my studs on my fantasy team.

I'm not sure I understand why on pillars 2-6.

I will only take a Dallas "D", after last year. No other 'roids, and I exclude all druggies like QC & R. Williams.
Why one Rook?
Why not the WR if he is the only draftable WR on his team?
There are a lot of girls names. Sean Salisbury, Shaun King, Ade Jimoh, etc.
HeHateme, Adelwale Ogunleye!

SKINSnCANES 09-08-2004 02:20 PM

I will always take a receiver if hes the only good one on the team. Which explain why I drafted randy moss with my first pick this year. OR why chambers is a great pick, or Owens, or a couple other great receivers.

The rookie thing can go either way. Ive got Fitzgerald on my team this year, hopefully he'll have a huge year for me.

These are all judgement calls that I make - Rules of Engagement. I think it's fun to pick a rookie - but not a good idea to have more than one on your team. If there's not another good WR on the team, your #1 stud will suffer (example: Moulds w/o Price). I would not have recommended Chambers, but now that Booker's in town - he'd be a decent grab. On the girl-name thing, that's just good business - name one super stud who has a chick's name!

If you really want to win at fantasy football, that is the attitude you HAVE to take. But I am like you - for that one or two games a year that a guy plays against the Skins, it is tough to put him in the lineup. If they are a borderline player or if they are going against a true strength on the Redskins, I will bench them. A quality player stays in my lineup if I can't find SOME justification for benching him, besides the fact I will be rooting AGAINST him that day LOL. What's really nice is when your fantasy player has a big game against the Skins, but the Skins WIN!!

I hear that! That's definitely the best...

By the way, I was never condoning benching a stud player (ie 1st round pick) against the skins... that's nutz.

Gale Sayers was pretty decent, and thats kinda feminine. Same with Terry, as in Terry Baldshaw.
