If You Ran the Redskins...
What steps would you take between now and opening day 2009 to improve this team?
Here's what I would want to see happen 1. Don't Quit on Zorn I've talked about this in greater detail in another thread, but I think unless he goes totally Norv on us these next three weeks then it's in the best interest of the team to keep him 2. Give the Chief New Indians If we are going to commit to Zorn as the head coach, even if only for one more year, then we need to entrust him with the responsibility of deciding what staff he wants surrounding him. And I'm going to guess it's going to include maybe 40% of the current staff 3. Trust the Youth Thank you Kendall, Griffin, Thrash, and Washington but they need to take a back seat now-if not leave the team entirely-for some of the younger guys. These younger guys are going to make mistakes but at this point there is no room for improvement with the four aforementioned guys (when they are even healthy) and if we're seeing that we hover around .500 with these guys then it's time to start moving forward 4. Fortify the Offensive Line This is our biggest weakness. We went from experienced linemen to old linemen seemingly overnight (though to be fair, many on this board saw it coming from a mile away). I'd love for us to sign Jordan Gross from the Panthers and draft Duke Robinson in the first round. If we can add another lineman (Unger, Herman Johnson) in the 3rd round that'd be huge. Bottom line we need at least two new offensive linemen. 5. Veteran LB Karlos Dansby. He's my new Justin Smith :) 6. Move He Who Shall Not Be Named to #2 QB I'm tempted to say make training camp an open competition. But I'm more inclined to say we should know by now if Campbell is our guy. If he is, committ to him long-term this off-season and firmly establish him as our guy for the next 5-7 years 7. Renewed Focus on Special Teams I can't pinpoint exactly what the problem is but something needs to change right away, and it may probably have to start with letting Danny Smith go 8. Continue to Give Scott Campbell an Expanded Role in Player Personnel I think this is happening regardless 9. Re-Sign DeAngelo Hall I think they blew it last year when they didn't take advantage of a deep draft class at DB by selecting Justin Tryon. Hall has fallen into their lap and they shouldn't let him get away. They really can't do all that much better at this point What would you do? |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
Reduce beer prices to $1.00 and have the cheerleaders cheer from the stands. Sorry its as good as I can do at this time.

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
1. Resign key players on the lines. Demetric Evans and Pete Kendall must be retained. I would offer DeAngelo Hall a contract for about 3 years and 12-14 million, with 4 million guarenteed. It will allow him to stay here, and compete for a starting role. If he thinks he can do better elsewhere, I doubt that, but more power to him.
1a. Announce the release of defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, Receivers coach Stan Hixon, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel. 2. Extend the contracts of Anthony Montgomery, Carlos Rogers, and Jason Campbell for 4-6 more seasons with larger-end signing bonuses. 3. Release Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot, James Thrash, Casey Rabach, and Todd Yoder. This will create an issue at corner, but right now, I feel like Griffin, Taylor, and Marcus Washington will all have a role on the 2009 Redskins. Springs probably won't play a 16 game season again, and offered the choice between extending him to lessen the cap hit, and moving on, I think we move on. 4. Announce the move of Jon Jansen from T to C. Colt Brennan becomes the 2nd QB, while Todd Collins stays on as the 3rd QB. 5. Chad Rinehart is the opening day starter at RG. Randy Thomas becomes a utility lineman, who works some at Center to help us out in a pinch. 6. We draft one of the many offensive tackles in this class with our first round pick, and he competes right away to start with Heyer. 7. We add a defensive lineman in the third round of the draft, a running back in the 5th, and our Center of the future in the 6th. 8. Redskins re-sign Leigh Torrence in camp after he gets cut by New Orleans, and make a play for Oakland Franchise CB Nnamdi Asomugha (probably an unsuccessful one), but Texans CB Dunta Robinson would be a nice consolation. Justin Tryon rounds out the depth. Redskins sign New Orleans WR Devery Henderson. 9. Corneilius Griffin, Jason Taylor, and Marcus Washington are all potential training camp releases, depending on how the youth does and how well they take care of their bodies in the offseason. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
And the 53 man/depth chart would look something like this, give or take, if I was in charge:
QB: Campbell, Brennan, Collins RB: Portis, Betts, (rookie projection) Tyrell Sutton (NU), Cartwright FB: Sellers WR: Kelly, Randle El, Moss, Thomas, Devery Henderson TE: Cooley, Fred Davis, (rookie projection) Anthony Hill (NC St) OT: Samuels, Heyer, (rookie projection) Eugene Monroe (Virginia) OG: Kendall, Rinehart, R. Thomas, Fabini C: Jansen, (rookie projection) Antoine Caldwell (Alabama) DE: Carter, Evans, Jason Taylor, Phillip Daniels, Chris Wilson DT: Montgomery, Griffin, Golston, (rookie projection) Vance Walker (GT), Alexander LB: Fletcher, Washington, McIntosh, Blades, Fincher, Khary Campbell CB: Rogers, Dunta Robinson, Hall, Torrence, Tryon S: Landry, Horton, Doughty, K. Moore K: Suisham P: (rookie projection) ? |

Agree about Evans, not as sold on Kendall. Curious to see what value Daniels and Buzbee bring in 2009. Sounds pretty fair on DeAngelo Hall
1a. Announce the release of defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, Receivers coach Stan Hixon, and offensive line coach Joe Bugel.
I'd hold on to Gray if possible. Would let Jackson go though
2. Extend the contracts of Anthony Montgomery, Carlos Rogers, and Jason Campbell for 4-6 more seasons with larger-end signing bonuses.
Fair enough
3. I think he's an Arizona Cardinal next season. I especially think it's ok to let him go now because it seems as though Horton has the safety spot solidly locked down and I'm confident that Doughty can be a decent backup. Had this not been the case, I'd have Springs back if for no other reason than safety help
4. Announce the move of Jon Jansen from T to C.
And the 53 man/depth chart would look something like this, give or take, if I was in charge:

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
No Sellers?
Sorry, I always forget fullback is a position. Sometimes I think Portis takes out linebackers with his mind.
I wish we had two Mike Sellers. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
Why Devery?
Vertical factor. Moss, Kelly, Cooley, and Randle El all figure to be starters in the Zorn offense, with (hopefully) Kelly as the go to guy. I have Thomas as the first guy off the bench, but if Moss' hammy flares up, we don't have a reliable deep threat. I wouldn't say Henderson is reliable, but he does offer a ridiculous career yards per reception average, which makes him an asset to us.
|
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
Doesn't he have a bit of a reputation for dropping passes though?
|
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
The other clear need on this team is that Fletcher is reaching the very last drop of the consecutive starts/reliability cup. Can Rocky play inside? I don't know if Blades ever will. We may keep Marcus if only that we can bump him inside in a pinch.
|
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
Doesn't he have a bit of a reputation for dropping passes though?
I'm sure. It's probably why New Orleans doesn't want him on the field.
Still for what he would cost, I'd be ready to pull the trigger. We really badly need a gunner on punt team as well. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I sign Hanynesworth.......trade for Johnson and get a elite Center, Move Jensen to RG start Heyer and Tell Zorn, make it work or take your ass back to Seattle

Any names? When I think "elite centers" nobody really pops into my mind. Jeff Saturday I always liked but that guys been locked in with the Colts for like ever. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
1. Sign Michael Jordan. Why? Because he's freaking Michael Jordan.
2. Clear cap space for 2010 when Lebron James, Chris Bosh, and Steve Nash become free agents. 3. Scrap points one and two. I just realized that basketball players won't help a football team. Then again Lebron and Bosh would make a hell of a receiving corps especially with Nash throwing to them. However in all seriousness I feel like it's way to early to decide what I'd do. So much of it depends on who's the head coach next year. In all honesty I kind of think it would be more fun to play this game if we considered Cowher coming here next year, but the more level side me seems to think that Zorn really should stay as head coach and as well as the fact that we really need to get out of this endless cycle of turnover that has been a hallmark of the Snyder era. Still there are things that need to be done weather or not Zorn stays or goes. - DeAngelo Hall needs to be resigned. I don't care if it's a contract comprable to what the Raiders gave him, the guy can play and so far he's kept a low profile. On top of that he wants to be here, this was the team he grew up rooting for, and it's not like we're not competive. - Get a pass rushing OLB. One way or another we're going to need this, weather we end up with a 3-4 system under Cowher or the same system under Blache. Personally I think that Blache's schemes technically are more ideal for a LB that can pass rush then a DE that can get to the Quarterback as from what I've seen Blache doesn't seem to give the DE's a whole lot of leeway when it comes to getting after the passer as he's hell bent on stopping the run most of the time. And of course if we switch to a 3-4 well this is a given. Still amongst all turmoil the defense is definately not to blame. - Situation permitting a DT to replace Griffin with the ability to get a push inside. I personally find it hard to fault our DT's consdiering how we've been effective agaisnt the run most of the time but some of the people around here have a point in regards to the situation as it relates to our pass rush. Again though addressing the alternate universe possibility a quality NT that could rotate with Montgomery would be ideal. - Really start to think about Campbells future. Do I want to give this guy a lot of money to stay and hope that after all this time he ends up with an Eli like breakthrough or do I consider letting Collins and Colt duke it out in training camp. The funny thing is the franchise tag might be the way to go. - Name names on the O-Line. I'm tired of hearing oh we need to blow up the O-Line like there will be no consequences. Yeah screw the salary cap get rid of Jansen thats still 9 million against the cap in a year in which we will be hard pressed for space. Especially with the possibility of signing two top flight corners. Wanna get rid of Randy Thomas? Lol, r u touched in head? We can't feasibly get rid of him until Obama has to run for office again. I personally would seriously consider moving Jansen to LG considering the requirements for the position and his current skillset. And if Rhinehart shows he can play RT these next few games then we might have ended up finding something special. Plus if theres a better option available at Center then consider letting Rabach go. Gross is also a free agent that should get serious consideration even though we probably won't be able to afford him. - Listen to Wilbon and draft players in the trenches. I don't want to hear about some Draft Board you got etched in stone especially considering the fact that you remind me of those crazy religous people that always seem to have God conviently on their side when defending their point of view no matter how wrong it is. To put it in simpler terms I think Vinny is either full of shit or manipulating the board to favor recievers. Rod Gardner, L. Coles, C. Russel, T. Jacobs, B. Lloyd. Thats funny considering the fact that we were able to get productive play out of Samuals and Jansen since 2000 and yet this team is still hell bent on finding recievers. Even the Falcons who at the time reached for Matt Ryan knew they had to build up front. Ironically this is one of the reasons I want Cowher, in giving him full control will all but insure that the team finally focuses on fortifying the trenches. - Consider pouncing on the possibility of finding a RB in FA or the draft (around the 2nd or 3rd round) to help take the load off Portis. I love the guy but I fear that pretty soon he won't be able to walk let alone play considering the beating he's took since his time here in Washington. In an ideal world I would like to find the next Michael Turner (technically the one that backed up LT in San Diego). At the very least draft Sellers replacement around the 5th or 6th round and consider giving the big man more carries. - NO MORE RECIEVERS. YOU'VE MADE YOUR BED NOW LIE IN IT. If anyone in the Redskins FO makes a serious attempt for CJ I will find you and when I do I shall unleash the fury to end all furies. You got 4 big guys to throw to USE THEM (for those of you counting at home Thomas, Kelly, Davis, Cooley). That will be all for now. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
1. Re sign Hall. He will be the leader of the secondary. I would sign Hall (for the right price) before I sign Rogers
2. Release M. Washington: I think we all know why 3. Sign at least two big name free agents (preferreably on each line). Synder has surprisingly gotten away from the big splash the last few offeasons. 4. Draft an OLB in the first round. (Rey Malauga USC) 5. I agree with you D-Bag359 we need to look for a quality back in the 3rd round to get Portis and Betts some air. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
Well as far as players go (and I haven't even glanced at free agent possibilities yet) obviously I'd shore up both lines.
Honestly, that's almost all I would do. Bring in 2 good veteran O linemen and really sit down with buges and find out if he wants to be here. If he doesn't I'm not sure where you go for positional coaches next year, given the scheme we're running. I'd also drop stan hixon, and look at bringing in someone off the pats staff. They get production out of no name receivers and have been for years. Re-sign hall (unless we can trade portis and a #2 pick for that CB from oakland whose name I can't spell or pronounce), make fred davis a #2 TE, and draft running back in an early round regardless of who we have here. (a move we should have made last year) My draft would be geared toward o line, running back, D-line, and linebacker. I'd trade picks up or down to get impact players at those positions. I'd stick with Cambell in camp as a starter, but I would keep an eye on brennan and I would make it a point to give him time with the first team offense to see how he fares. |
Reduce beer prices to $1.00 and have the cheerleaders cheer from the stands. Sorry its as good as I can do at this time.
lol firstdown you've been on fire lately buddy, keep it up. My short list: replace most of our 6-8 million dollar club members like marcus, ARE, andre carter and maybe even springs. Marcus is slow and doesnt impact the game much if at all. Honestly, almost anyone we would plug in for him could get easily replace his 30-50 tackles a season. ARE - the 2 rooks should be ready and we should give them a chance to see what they got. Andre carter - i admit, ive never liked the guy. always thought his "quietest 10 sacks a year" were not worth what we lose in the run game. now those 10 sack years are 5 sack years. not enough production for a guy making 6-8 mil. Springs - im not a believer in hall, you guys are. if you believe hall can be a starting corner then id let springs and his 8 plus mil contract go. i like the idea of letting springs go, i just dont like the idea that we can stop searching for a replacement corner b/c he got hall (who might want 70 mil over 7 years!) |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I would:
1. Bring humility to my position 2. Hire a President to run all football operations 3. Get out of his way 4. Hold him accountable for the long term health of the team, and replace him if necessary if there is a continual and consistent stretch of sub-par football. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I would:
- be checking with my scouting department, make sure they had a good read on the various line players available. - listen to VC/JZ about the player moves that are available - meet with JZ after we are done this season's games (however far we go) and review his goals and coaching personnel. Give him the authority/responsibility to fire-hire his staff to fit his methods. - authorize the spending needed to bring in competitive talent both on field and coaching - sit in my owner's box and Scream "YEAH!!!" when we beat our opponents (oh and watch all the cheerleader practices! :) ) |

Hall has hands and that's awesome. We could use it, but he's not as good (at least right now) as a healthy springs or rogers. Rogers has been playing some outstanding football this year and has been much of the reason our D has been as good as they have been. With a none existant pass rush this guy has manned up week after week with the league's elite recievers, often with little to no help, and consistently shut them down. He's a gem. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I would look for a way to trade Portis for picks (like Dallas did with Walker). I know he's dinged up but he's having an MVP season and his value wont get higher. Hopefully they could draft some linemen and begin the process of building this team from the inside out.
I see the Portis situation like Lavar where they could have traded him and got something in return but instead the skins hang on too long, nagging injuries add up, he cant play, Skins get nothing. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
rebuild the team starting with the offense and defensive lines. I make it policy to think line first- give me superior lines with average skill position players and we'll win games.
|

I love clinton but it just may not be a fit here anymore. If we could get a decent value I'd trade him. RBs have been pretty thick lately. |

The thing is the owner spends enough $ to ensure the Skins never have a 1-15 season so they will never get a #1 pick so they have to go for numbers of picks instead. Trading CP would get them that volume of picks. The skins are stuck in that region where they will never be terrible and get high picks and they will never be championship caliber because the team is just not built like a championship needs to be. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
If I ran the Redskins I would do a few things.
1. I would get rid of VC and get a GM in here. A top tiered GM. Someone of the Tenn, Balt, NYG, Pitts mold. Someone fairly young. We have some decent personel staff so that doesn't mean getting rid of everyone here. We need to have a plan and stick to it. This GM might decide to "see what we got" next year w/ personel and coaching. Let's be patient. 2. Working w/ the new GM, I would try to stockpile some picks. If next years draft class is not too good-which i've heard-we can wait-but we need as many picks as possible. 3. Based on our goals, we decide who to keep and who were paying too much money to. On a short list are ARE and AC. Nobody on our team is uncuttable. Nobody. 4. Assess young FA's...Haynesworth, Gross are options. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
1. First and foremost I'd get behind my head coach. The front office needs to have this guys back. He needs to be able to bring in his own guys. He gets 3 full years.
2. As much as I think Vinny sucks like a bunch of rotten assholes, he's tied to Zorn. He gets next year and the year after. I'm going to give him 3 full years too. We need some damn stability around here. |

I don't disagree. I think we need to stockpile some picks. The FO needs to make the call as to whether we can be SB Champs w/ this core. If the answer is no, well let's try to build something here. Not saying we should, but if the situation calls for it, i wouldn't be opposted. Or any other player for that matter. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I would at least "shop" Portis to see what we could get. We could possibly fill a couple of positions with what we could get for him. I think it would also send him a message that no one is indispensable. Even if we did'nt make a deal he would get the message. Portis is a warrior, but the Lions couldn't win but so much with Barry Sanders and no one else, and we can't go but so far with the lines we have. With the trades we've made lately, picks are needed badly. I would definitely give Zorn more time to install his offense and put his own staff in place. I'm not saying we should trade Portis for sure, but lets look at our options. As I've said before, winning has probably made it harder to get our rookies in to see what they can do. Winning now with the same guys is doing nothing for our rookies or our future. Was the goal to just make the playoffs or to improve our team? It would be nice to do both, but really, this team is not strong enough to go very far even if we did make the playoffs.

The first thing I would do is hire a quality football guy to run the show for me, then I would kick back in my plush office, count my money and play Madden and Call of Duty all day.

I got back into COD4 again last week. I'm addicted to hardcore deathmatch. Also, if I were the owner there would definitely be verbage in every contract that would allow me to lay with the players wives in a marital sense if the players did not preform well enough on the field. |

Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
I would build through the friggin draft for god's sake. We wasted a 2nd rounder on Jason Taylor, and now that Erasmus James is gone, we officially pissed away a 7th rounder, too. For anyone who doesn't think that means much, look no further than Chris Horton.
So that's now two draft picks from next year we blew trying to improve a D-line with two players who have netted next to nothing on the field. I'm so annoyed right now. We'll never learn. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
If I owned the Redskins, here is what I would do:
1) Fire everybody - - as in EVERYBODY 2) Hire somebody who knows what he's doing, and then leave him alone to do what he knows how to do 3) Sign the checks for expenses 4) Cash the checks from revenues. That pretty much covers it. If I merely ran the Redskins, here is what I would do: 1) Whatever Mr. Snyder [never "Danny Boy"] wanted me to do. If I didn't do that, I'd be out on my ass in the street without a job. |
Re: If You Ran the Redskins...
On Offense:
1.) Develop the line. 2.) Move Randle El to the slot and develop either Kelly or Thomas to be the number 2 receiver. 3.) More two TE sets, (get Davis on the Field) On Defense: 1.) Draft or Sign a large run stopping DT that can stop the run and get to the QB. 2.) Let Jason Taylor move between OLB and DE.
