Skins in early contract talks with Hall to keep him in DC

Hall in early stages of contract talk with SKINS about long term deal. I hope they get this one done.

And think they will.

Thoughts.

Re: Skins in early contract talks with Hall to keep him in DC

He won't get a deal as good as Oakland's last year, but he will get top end money. I'd like to see a long-term deal with high incentive clauses and salary but zero signing bonus. If he doesn't carry a high cost to cut him and he only is paid if he plays, he'll be an All-Pro. If he gets his payday and thinks that the team needs him and won't cut him, he'll be a slacker.

Love Hall, he's got the knack to make the big play, which has been missing from our defense. Plus he's young. He's worth big money; I just hope the Skins don't throw draft picks into the negotiations (yeah, I know, that doesn't make sense, but don't put it past VC).

While I don't put anything dumb past VC, how could draft picks enter into this equation? Hall is a FA this coming offseason. Unless he feels like forfeiting draft picks for the hell of it, this deal comes down to $$ and nothing else.

I really hope we sign him, but not if it chews up the room we need to sign more important positions of need: OL, DL, LB....

As I said in another thread I just hope it's a reasonable deal. I like his ability to snag INTs but he does have some baggage that is concerning.

Now this is what I don’t get about skins fans. Those are only positions of need because they weren’t addressed when should have been! Corner NEEDS to be addressed now before it is too late.

So many people complained when we drafted 3 pass-catchers last year. That was absolutely needed! By the time Moss’ contract is up, they should all (hopefully) be fully acclimated to the NFL and the offense. ARE is not much help and may be gone sooner than later. This is the foresight that this organization has lacked for too long.

I agree that CB is a position of need given Smoot's decline and the fact that Springs is not likely to return next year. However, giving Hall a gigantic contract that hinders our ability to improve in other areas is not the only way to address our CB issues....

areed. that implication was not my intention. i'm simply saying it needs to be a priority BEFORE it becomes a desperate necessity (like o-line and olb are now)

Its funny we bring in some guys and offer them a bag pay day and new deal and they don't pan out. We bring Hall in and offer him base pay and now we will have to pay more to keep him here. Hall might have been a good player to have offered an extension like the one plax got which we could have opted out of without a big cap hit but we might still be able to negotiate something that works for both parties.

Yes, they need to move on this quickly - with Hall feeling good about his contribution to the team fresh on his mind. As soon as he gets an outrageous offer from another team, he'll forget that playing on the redskins had a positive affect on his behavior and his play on the field.

Then it will be about the numbers, which was the mistake he made when he signed with the Raiders (even though being placed on the trading block left him with little options).

Like I said in another post:

When and if he gets the money, will he revert to free lancing and stupid personal fouls? He's at his best behavior right now because he wants the money, once he gets the money will he go back to his old ways? Stay tuned.

This is the thing that concerns me. Hopefully he has grown up and left the childish behavior that costs his team behind. But just in case, I would like to see some form of contract that would include behavior clauses and would not leave us in a financial bind should we decide to release him. That being said, if he has learned from his mistakes, I think he would be a nice long term addition to the team. Not that there are many, but one of our biggest deficiencies on defense is getting turnovers, and he is quite good at that.

Agreed. We arent going to get him to sign a contract with less than 12-15M garaunteed, though... its just not going to happen. I think 7 years, 50M with a 12M signing bonus would be about right.

Hope they get this done for a reasonable price. Hall has been a great addition to our team. Adds that playmaker that we need.

Hopefully his past antics are over and hopefully he has matured. He is playing for a team he wants to be with so maybe that will help.

I agree, I'm still not sold on hall, and I doubt I will be for a long time. I've noticed he gets burned quite a bit and I've seen his bs in Oakland and Atlanta. I'm not ready to jump with joy until I see consistence.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rogers is traded for a 3rd round or lower pick due to the fact that he's signed for another year and then becomes a FA. He's had a solid season and might even command a 2nd rounder from some sucker.

I want Hall, but it ought to be a structured deal that guarantees a minimum and gives tons of incentives. The man wants to be a Redskin by his own word, we'll see what that really means.

I feel like Hall has earned his job for next year with some solid play at corner, but I don't think he's earned anything past another look in 2009.

But if we don't pay up and he gets away, we'd still have to sign or draft someone else. Hoping a new guy can come in and produce equally as well as DH is somewhat of a gamble since we already know what we have with Hall in Blache's system.

The only way I say no is if he asks for Antoine Winfield type money.

When has he been burned with us? The guy I see getting burned is Fred Smoot.

Twice in the Eagles game, he was lucky DeSean Jackson dropped them and I've seen it in other games also.

younger is better! Drop Smoot and Springs and sign a third Cb and we might even catch some INT's next year!

Overall an upgrade...now we need to do that at other positions!

Hall is what he is. He's not a great player, but if you throw it to him, he'll catch it and return it the other way. Rogers is much better in coverage, espically zone, but he's a good bet to drop it. They would make an interesting duo, that's for sure.

Smoot's pretty useless, though. He's like the worst of Rogers and the worst of Hall rolled up into one player.

I just hope this doesn't eventually mean the end of Rogers, who really had a breakout year. Spurning the guy we drafted in favor of someone else's free agent would kind of be a Vinny thing to do (although what is up with that draft pick comment? Were you joking or drinking a little too much egg nog?)

Re: Skins in early contract talks with Hall to keep him in DC

It won't be too much longer before there will be no more reason to care what size contract a guy gets. We're headed for an end to the salary cap era. Pretty soon, he who has the gold will get his players with no consequences. We can go after the Texieras and Sabathias of football and have no problems.

I say sign Hall for whatever it takes. Having young guys locked up to long term deals is heavily advantageous as we enter the new age in 2010.

Re: Skins in early contract talks with Hall to keep him in DC

Hall was a cancer in Atlanta, he was mediocre in Oakland, and he has been pretty good in his few games here. He is one of the best corners in the league, you cannot teach speed. I think with us he will play well, we have to sign him.

Boy, football is a funny game because honestly, Hall has to thank DeSean Jackson for the fan's perception of him this week.

Jackson holds on to both of those balls and suddenly everyone is talking about how Hall shouldn't get a big contract because he can't defend the deep ball.

sign him, get it done........springs needs to stay no matter what........no faith in rogers and smoot......but i think carlos played himself out of a position and he shouldnt be in our future plans........i hate saying that cause he had a good start to the season, but its true. all this makes resigning hall a priority not a luxury.....he should be our number 1 target......

LOCK EM UP. Hes a special player. We need somebody to INT the ball. Im a big fan of Carlos Rogers BUT.. Carlos will knock it down...thats fine...sometimes....but Hall will take it away.

:laughing2 Smooter's gone from one of my favorite team personalities to maybe the one guy on the team I don't mind hearing trashed a little bit... cause yeah his play makes me want to throw my Crown and Coke @ the TV.

Is there anyway when we cut him as a player he can stay on as some sort of mascot though?

...of course with the re-signing of Hall it would put more pressure on Carlos for the starting spot. But who knows how many game Shawn Springs will play next season and theyre both extemely valuable. Rogers is a great man to man CB and im glad to have him in the secondary.

Well, both, but the egg nog didn't confuse me about the negotiations which is why I wrote "Yeah, I know, it doesn't make sense, but don't put it past VC."

The joke was that Vinny is so enamored with throwing away draft picks that he would even do it when re-negotiating a contract. It wasn't a particularly good joke (evidently).
