Would you accept Michael Vick on the Redskins?
 

Vick is starting to put things in place for a return to the NFL once he's released from prison.

In the interest of a non Campbell/Cerrato/draft/FA thread and since it will be discussed eventually:

I'm for Vick to the Redskins, not as a starting QB but as an 'athlete' that we can use as a RB, WR, wildcat QB, etc. Giving him 15 touches a game with his skills (assuming they've only minimally diminished) would give us a dynamic we need on offense.

As for the off the field stuff, he would paid his debt to society, served his time and done his pennance for his wrongdoing.

There's going to be interest in him so my question is, would you support the Redskins signing him? (mods please poll as Yes/No)

It's not really a need for us to have an "athlete" for a dozen or so plays, and especially not for someone who Goodell hasn't yet said when (if ever) he would lift the league's suspension of him. Plus with a criminal record already, every move of his would heavily scrutizined from Goodell all the way down to GTripp. I'd rather go after Vince Young before Vick

1. We don't need to invest more $ on QB's. The guy is a huge risk
2. We found out from the Falcons that having Mike Vick and Deangelo Hall on the the same team means trouble

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bit excessive of an assessment of Mike Vick?

Granted he is a criminal and he hasn't chose the most moral life to lead but hate you are spewing for him doesn't align with his crimes. When his time is up his criminal punishments will have been fulfilled. I don't like the idea of killing dogs for sport either but condemning a man and his character permanently as if he incorrigible is a bit much.

What he did was dumb. You break the law and you suffer the consequence...I get that. But why are you so fervent about making him sound like a Nazi dictator. He killed dogs for sport, which is against the law and I'm also against, but what makes that morally different from killing and eating an animal three times the size of a dog. I do that on a regular basis and even throw some away some if I can't eat the rest of it.

If we all lived in a vegetarian society that treated animal killings like human killings then your post lines up. But just because humans own domesticated animals and are emotionally close to them doesn't mean killing them is on par with rape or pedophilia.

You sound like an animal lover, which is great, but people who have biased perspectives should not weigh the scales of justice or morality in this point.


On a side note I am not in favor of Vick coming to the Skins. I don't think he'll play in the NFL due to the fact playing QB so long hurt him developing NFL-caliber talents at any other positions. WR is the only position I can see him playing but it will be too little too late for him.

BTW...what the hell is wrong with Deion???...Deion may be flashy but as far as I know he has never committed a criminal act on paper.

Well he wasn't the most skilled passer to begin with. As a matter of fact he was a below average NFL passer. His game was playmaking. Sitting and not being able to improve his game for two years is real real tough. He probably hasn't thrown a football in a real long time. He'd really need to get in the right situation that would let him sort of re develop his skills. He actually might want to think about playing in Canada for a year.

Here's another question. Do you think Joe Gibbs would play Vick? I somehow doubt it.
When I heard that Romo helped some old ladies and took some homeless people to the movies I was happy for him and the Cowboys orginization. When I see ARE and some of the other guys go out into Washington and try to help people, that's when I'm the most proud to be a Redskin. They might not be the best football players but I'm proud of them when I hear that.

If you are trying to pull off the maniacal tone then you certainly captured it.

What you didn't capture is any semblance of rational. I like dogs as much as the next guy, maybe not as much as you and your dog with teriyaki sauce, but the next time an unsupervised canine mauls a child to death be sure to stick up for the dog. A dog in that situation would be put down even though they are just instinctually an animal. I don't agree with putting them down but our legal code says so.

I know that lots of us have strong bonds between our domesticated animals. People consider animals to be human and are very close to their pet. Some are even closer, like you with your dog and the teriyaki sauce, but there is a delineation there. Vick didn't cross it, you might be with teriyaki sauce...but what you do behind closed doors is your business. Vick didn't kill a multitude of human beings or the State and Federal penal systems would never allow him to integrate with soceity. He's getting out soon which means they don't consider animals in the same class as humans. Being that we consume various types of animal meat that's probably not a stretch.

Look, I think what he did is reprehensible. I don't like having to stick up for Vick but I think you are in the wrong here. He is young and a human of free will, who in time has the same chance for redemption on his mistakes as you would have if you did something foolish at that age.

OK, that is just plain idiotic.

Trample may write a little crazy but he's basically right on on this. If you read the details of what went down within Vick's operation, it wasn't just fighting (which is of course a serious federal crime) it was systematic torture. Dogs had their teeth pulled out with pliers, one by one. They were beaten, shot, shocked, drowned, and garroted for losing.

I make no claims to know the composition of Michael's soul, and I do believe in redemption. But I will be very disappointed if in this world, in this life, he has not forfeited at the very least his right to wear the Burgundy and Gold.

How many people that wouldn't accept Vick on the Redskins eat cows, pigs, chickens and such? You have any idea how cruel and inhumane commercial meat plants are? I do not agree with or condone what Vick did or was involved in. As far as wanting or needing him on the Redskins, there is really no gain for any possible negativity that'd insue. Other teams, perhaps more desperate ones might take a chance on Vick.

Aside from Vick's off field problems, what position would he play? Not QB, Matt Ryan has shown what a pro style QB can do in ATL and the Skins already have an inaccurate passer at QB, not WR, they already have an ARE and we dont need more, not RB, again we have better ones tha Vick could become. I just dont see how Vick could fit in on this team. Besides, he just not worth the PR risk. There's plenty of other fish in the sea and this stinky fish's time has passed.

Slaughterhouses are indeed cruel, but killing animals for food and having them maim each other for sport is not even remotely the same thing
