Saints Hire Gregg Williams for D-Coordinator Job

Wow. Combine his attack style with Brees and that offense, and that team could be VERY dangerous in two years. They're already competitive now on the strength of the offense alone.

How long until Pierson Prioleau signs with the Saints

He and Randall Godfrey are racing to New Orleans as we speak.

Honestly NO is already better then the two playing in the NFC Championship this sunday. Actually a lot teams i nthe NFC are. Sad. Go Cardinals!

That's always been one of my faults with GW's defense. He LOVES his vets. He did a great job while we were here, but the combination of him and Blache and the vet addiction was sometimes to a fault.

He tanked in Jax so let's see if he can get back on track in NO.

Unlikely. In Jax he was working for a defensive-minded head coach in Del Rio who had his own way of doing things. The fit wasn't great, GW's schemes didn't always jive with Del Rio's. Not unlike the Gibbs/Saunders pairing on offense.

GW is going back to coaching with an offensive minded coach (Payton). He'll be given total control over his D. I'll bet he rips it up in no time.

He actually has a pretty good group to work with too. They just need to shore up that secondary and he could do a lot there.

That is exactly what I was going to say, they have a talented and young DL. Williams will have a good defense there pretty quick.

Do you think he pushes for a trade for Rogers? I certainly don't want him to be traded but I keep hearing the rumor he could be gone. This would go right in line with GW's track record for bringing in former players...

HAIL!

Man this is pretty interesting. Every year NO has that high-flying offense but can't become an elite team due to average/inconsistent defensive effort. Remember Williams took our d from average/inconsistent to a top 10 unit in 3 of his 4 years. This could be the move that puts NO in the elite category.

The popular belief in the media and in GWs own head is that he is one of the top DCs in the league. I can see no justification for that in his career to date.

A little more explanation would be helpful. Our d was average/inconsistent before Williams came to town and he turned it into a top 10 unit for 3 of his 4 years. Do you mean it had nothing to do w/ him?

Interesting thought. Though I am now convinced that the whole "Rogers trade" is simply a product of LaCanfora's imagination. I was never a JLC hater, but he has progressively alienated me and his position by position "breakdown" was so horrible that I have no reason to believe anything puts out there.

He already has Torrence whom he loves and if he trades for Rogers I would like a Vilma for Rogers trade.

GW turned our defense into a top 10 defense in the years that he was here (save for that one year we went 5-11). His defense is the reason Gibbs 2.0 had winning seasons, since the offense never amounted to much. I don't think he is THE top DC in the league, but he is a very good one.

Though he probably likes Rogers the fact remains that there are FA corners available and on top of that I doubt he would be involved in giving the Redskins anything of value in exchange for one of their players.

Then you are blind. He has had top defenses everywhere he has gone and actually been in charge of the defense. Tennessee, Buffalo and Was all had good defenses. Outside of one below average year here and one below average in JAX(where he didn't have quite the control he needed) his defense have always been very good.

You are correct. GW is a very respected DC in the NFL. His peers respect him and the players do as well. I am not sure davy has the same credentials?

I'd do Rogers for their first rounder, but nothing less than that.

WTF are you talking about?

You weren't impressed with his 1999 and 2000 Titans defenses? The 2000 team actually ranked higher in yards allowed than the vaunted 2000 Ravens D that season.

You didn't like his top 10 defenses here in DC?

You weren't impressed by his top 10 defenses in Buffalo?

Or do you just not watch football.

I agree with both statements, you're right if you're home shut up and cheer for someone but I see his point do I think we're better but when push came to shove ...we lost ,the name of the game is to move on to the next level, all but 4 teams failed.

I'll go out on a little limb here and say the Saints should make it to the SB w/n the next few years w/ their team. Given the chance GW will make this a good D. Drew Brees and the offense...they'll roll for several more years as long as he's healthy.

Plus if Brees goes down they've got a good backup in Mark Br...oh sh** nevermind.

Congrats to Gregg that is great for him. If he is able to get them up to snuff they could be a dangerous squad and much more well rounded than they are now.

Can we not (on both sides of this aisle) take the results generated by 20+ players on a defense that constantly turnover from season to season, and attribute all the results to a single person? Is that too much to ask?

Okay, I hope he does well in NO, I've had a soft spot for the Saints dating back to the days of Reuben Mayes and that trio of outstanding linebackers whose names I can never remember for some reason.

You beat me to it matty. But you are right they were great but had no offense to back them up. The Saints will be very dangerous in a very short time. How much do you want to bet the Saints first draft pick this year is a SAFETY? Anyone?

Cheers Matty, I'd forgotten Sam Mills had passed away. :(
