It isn't a performance enhancing drug and the next Olympic isn't for ~4 more years. Until then he can eat and smoke whatever he fancies. I just hove he got his cover story just in case....it wasn't weed, it's was flavored tobacco.

Yeah I mean he hasn't ever failed a drug test (apparently he's been tested over 1500x), and he's got deniability here. All this picture really proves is he's a dummy. But come on Phelps. You already got a DWI while you were underage, now you're publicly getting shitfaced on more than one instance and taking bong hits with college kids? I've got no real issue with smoking pot- IMO it's a lot less harmful than drinking - but wake up dude. Take your bong hits in the comfort of your own home.

Well, remember that Phelps also got caught drinking underage a few years ago (not that that's quite as bad).

Really, the only reason that I bring it up is because it was right near the house that I live in during my junior and senior year of college. Too bad it was a year or so later, or I could have charged for tours. :(

I wonder who took the picture. Probably some guy that was after the girl Phelps was "secretly seeing." I don't know though why he would smoke pot. I mean it's not the worse drug in the world and it probably shouldn't be illegal, but it's definately overhyped. Plus it reeks, but maybe when you're Michael Phelps you need a challenge, and that challenge is trying to pickup hawt chix with glazed eyes all while smelling like pot.

Man 1,500+ times!? I hate it when someone stands next to me let alone watches me. My brother is actually a swimmer at NC State and they're pretty damn facist when it comes to testing. One day he was taking a nap before practice and the NCAA guys, after asking his teammates and coaches where they could find him, went up to his dorm, knocked on his door and basically said "come on, it's time."

Don't really know though why Phelps is hanging out with college kids except maybe college girls are more willing to let a guy like Phelps hump and dump. However if I was Phelps I'd be catching a Lakers game with Jack Nicholson courtside, maybe hit the strip afterwards while meeting women that grace the pages of Maxim. I mean theres a million other things and people you can do besides going to some college frat party when you have the type of presteige a guy like Phelps has.

when i was in tampa, alot of the bars had smoking rooms. am not sure what the hell they were smoking, buit it was legal. just a thought:)

I don't think any less of him, but I never thought he was impressive as he's made to be anyhow. He won a bunch of medals, but he wasn't even the most valuable swimmer in any of his relays.

Smoking tobacco through a bong would just burn the mess out of your lungs. I haven't seen the picture. Was it a hookah or a bong? Anyway he admitted he was smoking pot. I also hear that he got a DUI too but that didn't make the spot light. It's a shame to see people screw up their lives with drugs and alcohol, especially when they've got so much going for them.

The DUI was after the Athens Olympics in '04. But yeah, he's one of the most recognizable people in the world- just smoke your bong in your own home. I've got no issue with partying. He's an extremely rich 23 year old who is probably getting more ass than a toilet seat. I expect him to live it up a bit in the offseason. He's just being dumb about it.

Just a guess but it might be hookah, aka flavored tobacco, which is perfectly legal here in Virginia and probably everywhere else too.

Honestly I'm not that suprised by this. He's a young millionaire who knows he can get as much ass as he wants. He probably was planning going into November to do as much partying as he could seeing as how that's when he's least likely to get tested.

Are you serious? Don't know a lot about swimming I am guessing? The fact that he relayed on that many relays in that many disciplines is just plain ridiculous. And take it to the bank...if he focused on any one of the four strokes he'd be the best in the world at any distance.

You are correct, most swimmers have a stroke (maybe 2) that they are really good at, and their other strokes leave much to be desired.

For instance, my daughter made regionals for her backstroke. She swims like a dolphin doing the back stroke, but her freestyle is horrendous. There are actually jellyfish that can cover ground faster than my daughter when she swims freestyle or any other style for that matter.

At the world level to be that good at that many strokes is beyond amazing because most swimmers focus on 1 to 2 strokes.

Do you know how hard it was for me to avoid the words "my daughter" and "on her back" in the same sentences?

My favorite part of this whole thing is the awkward way most of these sports writers and TV anchors talk about the bong that he was using, like they've never heard of one before. "Phelps was pictured taking the pot using a glass smoking 'bong' device, that, according to reports, some folks apparently use to with their marijuana-weeds."
