What's The Worst Super Bowl Ever (Excluding SB VII and SB XVIII)

Apart from Super Bowls VII and XVIII, which Super Bowl ranks as the Worst you've ever seen?

I've seen some bad ones, but I think for me the worst was the Bucs win over the Raiders. My favorite play in football is the interception returned for a touchdown, but that was just ridiculous.

Plus, every time I saw Gruden on the sidelines inching closer to a Super Bowl title all I could think was that should be Dungy.

Chargers-Niners. Complete mismatch. Not even a game.

Worst Super Bowls were the massive blow-out games where there was no question about the outcome early on. Examples:

Bears over Pats in 85.

Niners over Chargers in 96 (I think).

Packers over Raiders in 67

Black Sunday. Raiders 38 Skins 9. That was by far the worst SB I have ever seen. Complete domination by the Raiders.

Agreed...but read the first line of the original post.

I didn't mind the Chargers game if for no other reason that I was happy to see Humphries in the SB.

Totally forgot about the Bears and Walter Payton getting robbed

re: What's The Worst Super Bowl Ever (Excluding SB VII and SB XVIII)

I remember Super Bowl XXXVII (you know, f it) I mean...Super Bowl 37 as a game that the Raiders spent the whole half climbing out of a 23 point hole and getting it to ten points and some real suspense before the last two minutes became a desperation fest for the Raiders offense. I realize a lot of people lost interest at half because the Raiders weren't likely to pull off that many points against the Bucs defense, but I was at least glued to my set until the two minute warning.

(Full Disclosure: I had money on the Raiders)

The game that is widely regarded as the worst super bowl ever played was SB V (I mean Super Bowl 5!), and I'm going to have to agree with that one. Game winning field goal or not, that game was filled with ineptitude.

The Bills-Cowboys Super Bowls win co-runner up. Those games totally sucked.

I'm too stupid to figure that out. You have to spell it out for dummies like me.

I second that notion. Steve Young had his way the entire game. That said, I hated the Cowboys blowout of the Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII even more since the Boys had a legit claim as a dynasty.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but the last time the Steelers won the SB, when they played Seattle, it was an awful game. And yes, the Chargers-Niners was horrible to watch as well.

If we limit this to only games we have personally seen live and not on replay, then I'm forced to go with Ravens-Giants from 2000. But I maintain that SB 35 is was a better game than the three I've mentioned above.

Buc's-Raiders. Great back story, but the blowout just killed it for me.

I'd say the only really bad game this decade was in 2001 (Super Bowl XXXV) when the Ravens beat the piss out of the Giants. I mean, it was great to see the Giants get crushed, but it was a beating from the get go.

At least with the blowout games of the 80's and early 90's you got the impression you were watching historically great teams do their thing, e.g. the 49ers and Bears, which made it easier to deal with lopsided scores. It was almost like watching Hulk Hogan or Macho Man pummel some scrub on Saturday morning's WWF Superstars, in that given that you knew the outcome was predetermined, you could get behind the blowout.

For pure snooze factor I go Broncos/Falcons or Steelers/Seahawks; historically pretty good but not great teams doing just enough to win against bumbling opponents. Yawn.

Bears over the Pats and the 49ers over the Chargers.

There is nothing worse than a total blowout in the SB, especially when you see it coming from a mile away.

Superbowl XXV Giants vs Bills. It may have been close, but that was the ugliest game in tems of scoring that I had ever seen at that point in my life. It was a pain to watch.

re: What's The Worst Super Bowl Ever (Excluding SB VII and SB XVIII)

The worst Super Bowls to me are the ones that you know are going to be a blowout for the whole two weeks leading up to the game and then unfold exactly as expected. Bears over the Pats and the 49ers over the Chargers imediately come to mind. There are other super bowls where you at least thought there was a chance for a good game and were mildly surprised at the blowout...but these two games offered no intrigue or excitement.

Giants vs Ravens. Lop sided and extremely boring. Unless you were a fan of either team the game wasn't really worth watching past the first half

Super Bowl XL between Seattle and Pittsburgh. That game was so boring and it was two teams that I couldn't care less about. I barely even watched that game.

Steelers Cardinals for sure. I swear the Steelers had the refs in their back pocket. The only big time call the Cardinals got was a personal foul worth about half a yard after a punt. If I was a Cardinal fan, I would be livid.

even with the "refs in their back pocket". Had the Cards run from first and goal instead of pass they're SB champs. They forgot who they were playing. But that Football. Congrats to the Steel.

These qualify:

XIX 49ers / Dolphins
XX Bears / Patsies
XXIV 49ers / Broncos
XXVII Cowboys / Bills
XXIX 49ers / Chargers
XXXV Ravens / Giants
XL Steelers / Seahawks (just plain boring to watch)

XXIV and XXVII were probably the worst.

Awful, just awful, my three-peat visions crushed. But I'll tell you what...I'd take Black Sunday all over again if it meant TWO seasons going to BACK TO BACK Super Bowl. Man, we were the s*it.

I'm only 23, so I pretty much start actually remembering Super Bowls with the Cowboys wins over Buffalo...but the one Super Bowl I just remember not giving two craps about going in and despite the close game for the most part, having no interest in was Pittsburgh/Seattle... I dont know why. In terms of straight play, I'll go with Ravens/Giants, because the Giants couldnt do a damn thing against Baltimore.

Every Superbowl Dallas is not a part of.

Seriously there was not one Superbowl with the Denver Broncos in it that was good. They all sucked to me, yep that includes that Packer game.

49ers thumping the Chargers, who watched that game?

Raiders/Bucs, Seahawks/Steelers, I did not even watch the Ravens/Giants game, Denver/Falcons, San Fran spanking Denver,

Being younger than most of you i only started watching superbowls recently. The first one i remember was the Packers Broncos game. Going by the one's that I have seen I would have to say the three worst were:

1. Steelers- Seahawks: Big Ben was absolutely awful, and there was only 2 good plays all game (Willie Parker run, ARE trick play)

2. Colts- Bears: Opening play was exciting, but the Bears offense put me to sleep, and their defense didnt stand a chance.

3. Buccaneers- Raiders: This game was high scoring, but not exciting to watch a blow out.

On another note, in the past few years, there has been some great conference championship games:

2009: Cardinals-Eagles Steelers:Ravens
2008: Giants-Packers
2007: Colts-Patriots
2006: neither was that good,
2005: Patriots-Steelers
