New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Posted at 4:10 PM ET, 02/12/2009
Plackemeier Released/New Contracts For Carter and Randle El The Redskins released punter Ryan Plackemeier today, according to a source. Plackemeier, who took over as punter when draft pick Durant Brooks sputtered, has one year remaining on his deal. Like Brooks, he placed near the bottom of the NFL in most punting categories. The Redskins signed inexperienced punter Zac Atterberry earlier this offseason. Atterberry lost out to Plackemeier in a punting competition at Redskins Park when Brooks was released. The team has not been steady or settled at the punting position for years, save for Tom Tupa's excellent performance in 2004. Atterberry spent the 2008 offseason with Chicago, his only pro experience. Also, DE Andre Carter and WR Randle El have new deals with the team, according to league sources, a move done to lower their 2009 cap costs (the Redskins entered this month between $5-$7 million over the projected salary cap). Both players had deals set to expire after 2012; their new contracts run through 2015 (not that it's likely either would still be here then). Carter's new deal saves the team about $2.4 million in 2009, and lowers his case salary from $2 million to $1.5 million. Randle El's new deal saves $2 million in cap space for next season, and lowers his base salary from $4 million to $1.5 million according to sources. The Redskins must comply with the cap by the start of the league year, Feb. 27, when the free agency period opens. They are likely to release at least one high priced veteran by then, with LB Marcus Washington and DE Jason Taylor prime candidates. |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Cool, no complaints here!
|
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
business as usual, keep pushing back those cap hits and worry about them later ala jansen. these next few weeks should be interesting, hopefully we will get specifics in a day or so.
go skins!! |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Great Start to not cutting Springs, Washington, Taylor and Daniels. If we cut all of these non performers we have no cap issues. Cerrattos insanity continues.
|
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Great. Keep pushing that money back for those overpaid, underachieving Redskins. Then when they are even more underachieving than they are now, they'll be even harder to get rid of.
Don't get me wrong Carter is not bad. He's not anywhere near a premier end and got paid a good chunk of change. ARE in not bad but isn't the #2 WR that we'd like to have. |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
So for the people that complain my question is...if we don't restructure, what else can the team do? Wouldn't cutting some of these guys would affect our cap more? I know that restructuring is not a good thing, but isn't it a lesser of two evils?
|
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
I am just glad to see actual team news, hopefully we will see good steps towards getting the best possible group of guys for next season!

Yes? |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Well Campbell said going into the offseason that you may see some unexpected turnover with the offense.
Could Randle El's signing secure his spot with us and leave Moss's in doubt? If El is still here who is going to be the unexpected offensive Redskins not with us next year? Moss could be dangling on a trade string as we speak. |

Thats what I'm saying. Maybe ARE did'nt do the job he thought he should and took a cut, I say good for him. |

Yes, it certainly makes sense to cut a starting LB, starting CB, and two potential starting DEs with no replacement signed or in-house. What a dumb-ass Cerrato is. What type of leverage would the Skins be giving Hall if they cut Springs now? That one move could cost the organization $ 10-15M additional in Hall's contract because we lose the leverage of being able to walk away from Hall if the price tag gets too high. What if we can't draft a DE or get one in FA? Cutting Taylor and Daniels now would leave us in pretty bad shape, correct. I'm not saying these moves shouldn't be made, ultimately they'll clear $ 21M + in cap space, but they need to be timed correctly, FA doesn't open until March 1 and we must be under the cap by Feb 27. The draft is the next step. We can also delay dead-cap hits on these guys after June 1. A restructure/extension for AC, I've got no issue with, ARE I think is already overpaid, but based on his contract no way he is released until after the 2010 season. Understand the business side of things before you make the "Cerrato insanity" remark. |

I'd only remark that cutting Daniels and Taylor would leave us shallow at end, in terms on an injury putting an untested replacement in the spotlight, but keep in mind for most of '08 it was Evans and Carter starting and they we're serviceable. ... i'm just looking ahead and thinking that if the rumors about Marcus are true we're facing a much bigger issue at OLB than at DE even if Daniels and Taylor are cut. |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Now this creates more money to spend on hall and maybe a really good free agent like haynesworth or peppers, or max starks...

I agree with you completely, that's the whole point of the restructure of ARE & AC. The FO is buying time and giving the Skins options in FA & the draft. With the two restructures we aren't forcing our hand on a specific position. We have leverage, we don't need to get into a bidding war for a particular guy or give up picks to move up to fill a glaring need. If we nail down a better replacement in FA or the draft, then Taylor and/or Daniels are cut. If not, we hold on to them. To your point, if we lock up Dansby (doubtful) or a better OLB in FA or the draft then goodbye Washington. But to make these moves before we have a better option is the true insanity. |

ahh a little bit of sanity goes a long way |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
several people are griping about how these moves are stupid because it will likely increase ARE and carters cap numbers in future years, making it difficult to cut them when they stop producing (like with jansen). what we must remember is that there will ne no salary cap in 2010, which means well be able to cut whomever we want without worrying about the dead cap space such a move would create. so don't worry, next year at this time we could easily cut both of these guys, along with a ton of other non-producing players. this was a very good move by vinny. it buys us time to make other moves and gives us more room to sign players and improve our team in 2009. the only down side to this is snyder's wallet will likely take a much bigger hit when we finally cut ties with these two

Plackemeier should have been a keeper, best punter we've had in quite some time

Thank you. Someone else said it so I didn't have to. There's not likely to be a cap in 2010 and beyond. Extending Randle-El and Carter will not be a financial problem come this time next year. This clears more space than I had anticipated would be possible from Carter and Randle-El, because they're extending (to remain compliant with 30% rule) as opposed to restructuring. I'll withhold further comment until I see more contract details, but this points to an attempt to keep the old heads on the team around for a longer period of time. |

I don't want to see Moss go anywhere. But we sign El to an extension, and so much is at stake with D.Thomas and M.Kelly given their draft status. So if we don't get rid of Moss, we've got our receiving corps for the next few years it would seem. And that may very well be the case. It just means we're relying really heavily on last years rookies. That worries me. |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Can't wait for the NFL to rid itself of the cap. Dumbest BS they ever did. It was supposed to create parity, and it did, but in doing so created a ho hum product. You have a bunch of mediocre teams, with the same teams year in and out making the playoffs with a couple new faces each year.If Philly didn't tank at the end the SB would have been really crappy.

Admit it Matty, it feels good to say "bye," and then just flex some chump off the board. I know it does.:) |

And I really don't see it happening, so no worries. As we all want to see Kelly, Thomas & Davis step up, it is unproven now. Or at least case one of the 2nd year wideouts being an impact player this season, hopefully. With that said, thrash should be gone. That leaves us with Moss,ARE, Kelly, Thomas, Cooley, Davis in no special order. Half are already good proven talent at WR's/TE's the rest to be determined. The 2nd year kids on the team have to step up. |

I hope these kids are putting it together in the offseason for a big aerial surprise come regular season. Cooley/Davis is a sick TE combination and I'm anxious to see what Zorn can do with a couple of blocking/pass-catching monsters. |
Re: New contracts for Andre Carter and Randle El
Anyone know if his name was meant to be pronounced as Guido Matt because I think that would make a lot of sense.
Anyway back on topic. I really don't like the idea of rewarding non-productive players with more bonus money making it harder to cut them down the line. And of course by non productive I mean based on their production last season. It's honestly just a lot more of the same and I guess I've made my current feelings on the front office clear so I'll stay away from that for now. However with this current topic I'll go on record as saying I don't like the move. If anything I would rather cut the older guys and get some breathing room instead of using the same tactics that got us to where we are with Jansen, not saying that it will happen exactly the same way with Carter and Randle El but it's not promising. So there now you guys know why :D |
