Jones Works To Get 'Extra Edge' (WP Email)

Kenyatta Jones was at Redskins Park yesterday, a day off for the players. The Redskins right tackle wanted to work on his game after starting the season opener in place of Jon Jansen, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.
"Most guys come in for treatment, but I come in to get that extra edge," Jones said as he left the training facility. "I look at a little extra film, do an extra workout. You're going against pros every week. This is our job."

Sunday, Jones helped the Redskins rush for 166 yards on 39 carries mostly behind Clinton Portis' 148 yards on 29 attempts. Despite the gaudy numbers, Washington's offensive linemen weren't as good with their run-blocking as with their pass blocking. Quarterback Mark Brunell was not sacked.

Jones' blocks in which he sealed a defensive player from the runner were excellent, creating room for Portis. But Jones wasn't satisfied with his play because he didn't finish off his pass blocking well and didn't get further down field on some running plays.

"There's always a negative play here or a negative play there," Jones said. "I won more battles than I lost but I wanted to win all of them."

Offensive coach Joe Bugel emphasizes getting down field to follow the play even after the initial block at the line of scrimmage.

"We want to be around the ball at all times," Jones said. "A lot of guys don't want to run to the ball after it looks like the play is over. They want to just watch the play. We want to get to the ball and protect our guys and stop people from jumping on piles."

Jones has been solid since replacing Jansen in Washington's second preseason game. Still, the left side of the line is its strongest with tackle Chris Samuels and guard Derrick Dockery. And Jones wants to improve on his weaknesses while learning to work with right guard Randy Thomas.

I'm really happy with how Jones has slid into #76's position, kept his mouth shut, and done his job. He's really just what we needed when Jansen went down.

cool.

saden1 09-15-2004 03:31 PM

He's making his backup look bad...lol

GoSkins! 09-15-2004 03:39 PM

Great attitude!

bridaman51 09-15-2004 04:00 PM

I love it... Great work ethic, it is this type of attitude that is one contagious and two a winning attitude, that we have lacked in years.

JWsleep 09-15-2004 04:00 PM

This is the result of good coaching. Gibbs and Bugel have these guys aiming higher. The results may take some time, but this is the attitude of a winning team. While everyone is praisng them in the papers, they (to a man) say the game left a lot of room for improvement. Right on! GO DIRT BAGS!

Big C 09-15-2004 04:30 PM

what a great, unheralded addition from last year

FRPLG 09-15-2004 04:37 PM

I almost cry when I read things like this. You all think we would have any player do or say things like this under previous regimes? No chance. Gibbs has these guys gulping the coolaid.

Gmanc711 09-15-2004 05:07 PM

Thats great to hear that this guy is stepping up his game, to help the team. He's gonna have his hands full this weekend too. I'm really happy to hear about guys like this, hes going to be a full time starter in this league if he keeps up this work ethic.

PSUskinsfan11 09-15-2004 06:30 PM

Kenyatta is the man!!! I am glad to see he is working hard. I had a feeling he would be able to step up with Jansen out.

Big C 09-15-2004 06:44 PM

trade jansen, lol

oldswill 09-15-2004 06:56 PM

it's interesting to see that kind of attitude emerage. where was it last year? alot of it has to do with the coaches bringing it out in people and getting under their skin. granted jones was good last year on st but last years staff could have exploited it more.
i smell a new lagacy coming on; way to go jones and co.

Gmanc711 09-15-2004 07:56 PM

I wonder if Jansen is actually working with him at all.

jrocx69 09-15-2004 08:14 PM
trade jansen, lol
dont even joke about that :smashfrea

cpayne5 09-15-2004 08:30 PM
trade jansen, lol
You heard Gibbs after his injury. Jansen is gonna be a Redskin for a long long long time.

Gmanc711 09-15-2004 08:35 PM

I hope Jones has a great career in the NFL, even if its not with the Redskins. I could defintley see him going elsewhere when Jansen comes back. If he works that hard, and plays like he has for us, he should be a starter in the league.

MTK 09-15-2004 08:37 PM

I think Jones' contract runs out after this year, if he has a solid season he could very well find himself as a starter somewhere else next year with a nice deal.

GoSkins! 09-15-2004 08:50 PM

It's amazing how much players attitudes change when they know that the coachs care about them as players and as people. I'm sure it doesn't hurt having a group of role models like Gibb's & staff.

I agree. I'd be happy for him too. Even though we would be losing a guy who could be a amazing backup for us, I cnat expect a guy to stay here as a backup if he could start somewhere else.

oldswill 09-15-2004 10:04 PM

my bet is on jones resigning with us, i just have that feeling

JWsleep 09-16-2004 12:32 AM

Keep him if we can!!! You can never have enough depth on the line.

People talk about running backs in denver being a part of a system. Look for people to say the same about our olinemen as being a part of a great system. I bet we could get him to stay here if we are successful.

Trading Jansen is nto an option

Drift Reality 09-16-2004 10:01 AM

I think a lot of this probably has to do with the fact that everytime these guys see the coaches, they realize how hard the coaches are working on the gameplan, to put them in the right place to make a play - so they follow suit. It's wonderful.

skinzfan44 09-16-2004 11:56 AM

good attitude!!! It should spread.
