Redskins Mt. Rushmore

ESPN's latest "Hey look at us" feature on Sportscenter has fans voting for who they would put on a Mt. Rushmore for sports figures from their state. That got me thinking (see ESPN, it works!) about who you'd put on your Redskins Mt. Rushmore. 4 faces, players or coaches, here's the caveat-that you saw play or coach for the Redskins. Who would you put up there?

Here's mine:
Darrell Green
Art Monk
John Riggins
Joe Gibbs

Those would be my 4 as well. Very easy choice.

Baugh, Gibbs, Riggins, and Green

Yeah, I'm with dirthogs. As great as Monk was, an argument can be made for Baugh being the greatest player of all time, any era any position.

You guys saw Sammy Baugh play, what was that like?

(maybe if more people read the original post...)

LOL, I knew that would happen.. I was waiting for the first Baugh, George Allen, Darrell Green, Sean Taylor entry.

Well, it's 11:30 here and I've been drinking so I missed the BOLDED CAVEAT.

So I'd go D. Green, Gibbs, Monk, and maybe Charles Mann, given that Riggins retired when I was like 4.

SmootSmack 02-20-2009 09:45 AM

Re: Redskins Mt. Rushmore

PT, the four you picked would probably be mine as well. Just to be different though, I'll pick four others

Dexter Manley
Joe Bugel
Gary Clark
Monte Coleman

That's about right. If you saw the Redskins play during the glory days it's REALLY hard to pick anybody else.

I don't know some could make a case for Charlie Brown, Theisman, Clark, the Hogs(even though they get no recognition), ...

For my era late 70's throught the 80's my Mt. RushSkins would look something like:

Gibbs
Doug Williams(made history)
Charlie Brown
Monk

Re: Redskins Mt. Rushmore

Dexter Manley
John riggins
Gibbs
Clint Didier - "Its getting to be Didier time"

Why Charlie Brown? Because he was on winning teams?

Re: Redskins Mt. Rushmore

I watched the 87 team play in the SuperBowl, but I didn't remember much from it. Now my grandmother tells me that I used to point at John Riggins on the TV and say "That's me!", but if I don't recall it, then I don't count it.

The first year that I fully understood the Game was the 91 season when we went to the Superbowl. Though I am aware of the accloades of all of the 80's teams there is only one team that stands out in my mind. If I were to honestly name 4 coaches or players that I can remember playing and were to put on a Rushmore, then it would have to be.

Joe Gibbs
Darrell Green
Art Monk
Charles Mann

Honorable Mention: Gary Clark

I was talking to Lil' Danny Snyder this a.m., and he wants four busts of himself (different poses with/without sunglasses) created in the highest place known to man! He kept muttering something about short-man-syndrome or something....

Deion Sanders - Jeremiah Trotter - Brandon Lloyd - Adam Archeletta
OR Joe Gibbs - John Riggins - Art Monk - Darrell Green
Alternates - Dexter Manley - Gary Clark - Monte Coleman - Hogs
Hard decision. Which honestly says something about our beloved franchise. We've had some GREAT players here.

I agree with PT, but along the lines of what you did:

Ken Houston
Jacoby & Grimm (squeezed into one space, yes I'm cheating)
Charles Mann
Dave Butz

For some of you that interested in who was responsible for the redskins golden years in the late 80's to early 90's, here's a section of articles on Jack Kent Cooke.

Although the didnt coach the first one on the list has to be The Squire. He built the franchise to lofty heights from which it has since fallen.

JKC
Sonny
Riggo
Gibbs

Yeah, no doubt those would be the four that I saw play/coach.

However I would definitely consider Charles Mann (I was such a huge fan of his when I was a kid), and it's hard for me to not think of Sean Taylor, even though he was only with us for such a short time.

Hard to argue. Actually it isn't. I can't think of anyone even close to those four.

Re: Redskins Mt. Rushmore
Why Charlie Brown? Because he was on winning teams?
I may be wrong but I thought he still held some of the Redskins records. Wasn't he paired up with Riggo. Riggo being the diesel would run over people hard hitting HB and Brown would be the fast shifty RB?

Like I said we could put alot of people up their but most would be from the SB yrs I would guess. Thiesman was not the greates QB but got the job done. Riggo was a beast at RB. Green is one of the best CB's. Hell I remember him getting the nod to play in his first game and had to run back a kick off or punt. I remember him jumping/hurdling people and taking it to the end zone. Then later they questioned him about the run and he said something like yeah coach's told him don't be hurdling people anymore. Cause I think he broke his ribs on that play. Then came out the next game and played.

Mann, Manley, the smurfs. Those were the days. The end zone high fives.

I guess I'm the only one who would pick Doug Williams. Man made history with the Skins being the first African American QB to win a SB brought the team back in one quarter to win a SB. No big deal. Mosely....one of the only straight on soccer style kickers and one of the last. Those were the days. I hope we get a new generation of SB players to talk about. ;)

Charlie Brown was a Pro Bowler...Twice! He only had one 1000 yard season though. Other an that he was pretty average.
