Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Posted at 11:18 AM ET, 02/20/2009
Marcus Washington Expected To Be Released Today The Redskins will be making a roster move at 4 pm today, and from everything Jason Reid and I are hearing at this point, that will result in former Pro Bowl LB Marcus Washington being let go. Washington has been injured much of the past four years, but when healthy performed well. He was signed as a free agent in 2004, and was one of the emotional leaders of the defense. But, as I reported a month ago, several sources taking part in the Redskins' offseason personnel meetings indictated Washington would not be back with the team. If released, Washington would save the team $4 million in cap space (a $2 million dead cap feee remains from a signing bonus proration, but his salary is off the books). Washington was very popular with fans and teammates alike, but could not get on the field with regularity and had a difficult time making plays in 2008. Down the line the Skins could also release DE Jason Taylor and/or CB Shawn Springs for more cap relief. They are also likely to restructure several more contracts, with Dt Cornelius Griffin and T Chris Samuels among the candidates to rework deals to provide more cap sapce |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Any chance we can rename this thread something along the lines of "Redskins Offseason Moves"? Because I'm sure more of these changes will come in the next couple of days.

re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
thanks Mike. I just saw this too.
I think this is worthy of a thread. MW was a playmaker & leader in his time here. I know the blog had something about his difficulty to make plays in 08, but I think our D was notably better w/him in there. He always brought enthusiasm. I wish he could stay as a cheap (all vet min. jokes aside) backup, but I don't question the FO's decision to let him (and likely more) go. |

Yes no doubt. Getting old is tough though. Also no problem of course with a change of thread title as I'm sure we will have a few more changes coming in the next week or so. |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Well at least Redskins games will be a little less confusing now.

re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
its a bittersweet move. Obviously, we could not keep a player with Washingtons injury history and diminishing ability on the team at his salary. However, Marcus Washington is the only player on our defense who could really fire everybody up. He plays the game with a great passion and he made alot of memorable plays for us.
I honestly dont think anyone out there gives him a big contract. I think there is a good chance we can resign him to a vet min-ish kind of deal if he wants to come back, although comments he has made recently makes me think he may want to go play somewhere else. Unless he's playing for a division rival, i wish him the best in 09 wherever he lands. |

This is the day I've been dreading. :( I'll be in my room.

How 'bout we just make a big thread titled "Football" and just stick *everything* in there? ;) |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
This was expected. The team could never bring back a DeAngelo Hall and a Pete Kendall without making this move.
Taylor and Springs would be the next to go, depending how aggressive the team wants to be in free agency. |

Oh no! 53! It's okay man, it will end up being for the good of the team. No one will have anything bad to say about Marcus. It's a bummer to see him go for sure. Will you buy his new jersey for whatever team he ends up playing for? |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Not trying to pour salt in the wound, but that is exactly why I cannot pick a favorite player anymore. I remember how I felt the day that Art Monk went to the Jets.

Can we see about changing the title of your "football" thread to a thread titled "words". I think we'd be able to classify anything that comes up in the future that way. Sorry to see MW go. I don't want to vent but his release irks me because we finally got a talented backer from Free Agency that came and fit well in our system. In the time he was here we didn't really make a strong run at the Super Bowl. It's like his career was wasted by him coming here. I don't want other talented upcoming free agents seeing that pattern and thinking DC is, as the Boss would say, a death trap or a suicide rap. Unfortunatley his time is over here and so is his performance peak...hopefully it wasn't all for naught. |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Not surprising, sad to see him go nonetheless
|
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Well this sucks but expected. 53 was a great guy, met him numerous times and what I remember the most is how he came back out after training just to talk to my younger brother for almost 20 minutes. That really inspired him to play football and I really haven't heard anything negative of Marcus' interaction with the fans.
Hopefully he gets over some of his injuries and he finds a good fit with some other team. |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
I'll make myself a bit vulnerable here and just say this is the saddest Redskin moment for me since losing Sean (I know the two aren't even comparable in reality but i'm just saying emotionally). I've only seen a single Redskins game live - Browns v Skins '08 - and i can honestly say my eyes were almost always on Marcus when the d was on the field. He was already a favorite but his passion out there, which the camera can't really capture, was something I'll never forget.
... if he doesn't wear the B & G again I wish him the very, very best regardless of where he plays (although I'd kind of like to see him go to NO w/ Williams but doubt it will happen). On the other hand I'm not giving up hope we bring him back on a contract more favorable to the franchise until we actually replace him. |
re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
They just confirmed Marcus Washington's release on NFL Network.

re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Updating the thread title

Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Good player for us. One of those FAs that our front office never gets any attention for but we can't pay guys 8 mil a year to play 6 games.

Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
With all the injuries, it's easy to forget that Marcus was once a great linebacker for us.
Hopefully, I'll get to watch him play elsewhere next year. |

Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Glad to see were finally starting to make moves.
He was good the firs two years but injuries set in and he just wasn't really playing that much so I'm glad this happend. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
^ Um, I'm not exactly happy that it happened.. Although I know it's necessary move.. But he sure was a great leader for the team, I'm going to miss him alot..
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
He will be missed. I'll miss him making a tackle ten yards down field after the RB has a first down and celebrating like he just had a ten yard sack on a game winning stop.
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Hate to see him go but most likely a wise move. A great player for the skins for a long time.
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
it was good while it lasted.. i liked marcus he was a true skin laid it all out there and had everyone jumping around out there
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Sorry he was ok in my book so I'll stick with the Cartman responce.....
"Washington.....get the F*** out." LOL. Sorry I saw the South Park episode where they had to pick a replacement for Butters. |

A hall of fame coach brought him here & he went to the playoffs twice in memorable fashion. He was playing his ass off in the 05 playoffs. Do the math, the vast majority of nfl players will not win a super bowl. that doesn't mean they didn't play well & for good teams. Plus he made decent $ & the fans loved him. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Great player, just wished he could have stayed on the field more. Will be missed.
|
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
MW was a great Linebacker and roll model on and off the field for the Redskins.
As life goes and we age, and certainly in this business it's hard to stay healthy in the latter years this happened to MW. I wish him nothing but the very best with the rest of his career against everyone except the Skins! Really cool cat/gentlemen, that made time for the fans loved the Skins (A true Redskin) will be missed. All good things must come to an end. Have to just keep in mind this is nothing more than a HUGE BUSINESS decision. Nothing more. |
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
I had a couple of questions i wanted to get everyones opinions on:
1) What are the chances we bring Washington back at a much reduced salary? 2) What is the best way to replace Washington? Do we look to the draft? Free agency? Or what about Smoots idea that we move Jason Taylor to OLB and let him replace Washington? |

We didn't take advantage that we had a talent like MW to make a competitive deep run in the playoffs. He went twice to playoffs but they were under the most dire circumstances where we had to win 4 and 5 straight just to play in a wildcard spot. I'm dissapointed in the fact that he was a solid free agent pickup who panned out with the Skins and never really got a chance to be on a dominating team through his peak years. Since he was a free agent he could have selected any team that wanted him and I wished that the Skins held their side of it and became competitive in the light of making such a successful pickup. |

Play Taylor at Weakside backer to rush the passer similar to how Marvin Lewis used Arrington when he was here as D Coordinator. Draft Maualuaga!!!!!!!! |

I won't buy another teams jersey GMScud because I'm a Skins fan first and foremost. But it is tempting. :) I know I'm completely biased but I think we lost a great player today. Part of me hopes he goes on to a Pro Bowl season for someone else but that would only feed the resentment I feel right now for the FO. Cutting JT would save us 8.5 Mil Vinny. :spank: Anyway, I wish him luck but I'm going to miss seeing him out there. I hope these morons (FO) understand that BLADES cannot replace him and if JT doesn't have a really good year, you're still going to look like a freakin idiot Vinny. I realize that MW has been injured alot the last couple of years, but so has Springs. And Moss was injured alot too before he realized it might be smarter to not workout so hard during the off season. I think there's something ironic about Daniels working out so much in the offseason and coming into camp in the best shape of his life then getting hurt on the first day of practice. These guys are DRIVEN. But perhaps they carry it to far. Anyway. I'm done with my rant. Thanks for indulging me. HAIL REDSKINS! |

Out of curiosity, where does your undying devotion to Marcus Washington come from? |
Re: Updated: Redskins Release Marcus Washington
Move JT
Until i see this actually yield results i'm less than positive... JT is lousy against the run and just not a big hitter. Maybe at weakside he'll manage as a pass rusher but keep in mind offenses will target the hell out of him (especially w/ AC on the same side). If we do this Blache will likely have to keep Horton hovering on that side of the field to fly in and blast the ballcarrier. We'll see... |
