Free Agency and Salary Cap

As you all know by now we proabably have already "SIGNED" Haynesworth and have 15 million in Cap room to do so.

So here is the Dream Offseason Scenario.

Sign Hall Cut Springs. Create about 2 more million in cap room. Hall costs 4.5 Springs saves 6.5. DONE Probably more of a wash.

Sign Haynesworth. 6-7 million in room taken up. Done Probably 8 million eaten up in 2009

Sign Crowell - 2 million taken.

Sign Canty: 4 million Taken NOT Happening

Sign J Brown 4 million taken. (Dockery 3 Million?) If we do this do we cut Rabach?

Cut J Taylor. 8.5 million saved. NOT Happening

Restricted Tenders 3 million

Leaves us with: MINUS 1 million (plus rule of 51) for rookies
Draft best OT available.

Instantly we get younger and have a Dominate Dline, not to mention a beast of a center/guard and a young RT.

I really think our Skill positions are fine and D. Thomas and F. Davis will Step up BIG this year.

Sorry if this is posted in the Wrong spot but I wanted to see what everyone thinks.

We DEFINITELY haven't signed Haynesworth. The other teams in the running for him (Tenn, Det, Atl, TB) all have a ton more cap room than we do. Not to mention the fact free agency doesn't start until after midnight tonight.

I know we haven't "SIGNED" him, but you know what I mean.

If you were Haynesworth, why would you limit yourself to a team that won't have much cap this year? Why not go for the team that has 50 mil of cap space that could give him more money upfront than our team would.

And why do I get the feeling that Schneed is going to lose another clump of hair when he sees this thread title. LOL.

Possibly but I used his Cap info.

Too much loot, and someone like Tampa has a TON of cap room and can easily outbid us if they want to.

Plus I'm still on the fence as to whether we are really interested or if the rumor is little more than Danny doing a favor for his agent in helping to generate interest and help max out his asking price. I always thought the Briggs rumors were nothing more than Snyder doing a favor for Drew Rosenhaus. I have nothing concrete to base this on, just my view.

you think that he is willing to sacrifice a few million between TB and here...considering TB is rebuilding and knowing he has the chance to win now here in DC

Re: Free Agency and Salary Cap

Heres the deal, the redskins are helping to push the market up for Hayensworth, we really have no intention of signing him at all. The big signing will be Hall ,and DE/DT Chris Canty..Along with them a Guard(D.Dockery) & a FA OT

PS..Say Bye Bye to J.Taylor...

Depends on how many million we're talking. Plus, if his main priority is winning, he might as well re-sign with the Titans.

If we sign Hall, Canty, etc. we won't necesarily need to cut JT but we'll see.

If we do sign AH, I don't see how we'll be able to do much else without cutting JT, or maybe Springs instead.

JoeRedskin 02-26-2009 11:43 AM

Re: Free Agency and Salary Cap

I posted this over in the Dockery thread but I think it is more applicable here:

To me, our entire off-season plan hinges on the result of the AH deal. If it happens, then I don't foresee signing anybody other than Hall. If it doesn't, then let's sign Dock, S. Andrews, Canty and Crowley. Solid pick-ups at reasonable prices.

IMO, it is akin to the 2004 off-season. Jevon Kearse was the big-money aquisition. We went after him hard. Instead of throwing (at the time) obscene money at him and getting no one else, we let him go to Phil. Instead, we gave solid contracts to M. Washington, C. Griffin, S. Springs, J. Salavea and T. Tupa.

I would much prefer a free-agent class similar to the 2004 group than one big signing.

When does free agency start? I heard that it started tonight at 12:01am but I also thought it is FRI night at 12:01am.

If it is tonight then I'm staying up late and checking breaking football news. Then I'll go to sleep with the thoughts of sugar-loaded contracts dancing through my head.

Haynesworth could easily go to Tampa Bay and get tons of money. What do you think is his interest to come to DC?

there's a difference between tons of money, and dan snyder's version of tons of money. i'm sure it's purely financial.
You think Tampa Bay wouldn't be able to give him more money than we could? I mean they do have 50 mil of cap space.
Yeah, but are they willing to drop that money on him in a bad market. The face value of tickets may not be effected. But you have to figure that jersey sales, food sales, and advertising money is going to decrease. So it's a risk.

And the reason they have cap space, is because they've been relatively frugal in spending money. It would take a business model shift for them to drop $15 mill a year on something considered to be high risk. Which he is.

Dan is gambler, and is not afraid of high risk items, if he can envision a payoff, or playoff, if you will.

Re: Free Agency and Salary Cap

The interest is legit, and I garuntee you Haynesworth knows that the Skins sign big time names like this all the time, and what happens is that in a couple years, Hayneworth is going to pull a Portis and have his contract restructured over and over to clear cap space giving Haynesworth even more garunteed money. It makes sense to me, and Snyder has no problem dishing out the chedda!!!! I mean, the guy owns Tom Cruise for god sakes!!!!

I think we would cut Springs before JT. Plus JT could still be a monster player for us this season. I would love to see Hall and Canty!

I read somewhere yesterday that the Giants were rumored to be interested in haynesworth. If thats true, they are obiouvly the more attractive destination for haynesworth.

Re: Free Agency and Salary Cap

Just days ago, the market for Hayensworth was only 2 teams and the buzz was minimal..As soon as the report came out that the skins owner was having dinner with his agent, the 100 million dollar talk started. Truth is we really dont have the cap space, all of us would love to sign him but there are several other teams with 30-50 million in cap space..After we tender our free agents, we have little room. It hypes his buzz around the league, but doesnt seem realistic

I'd hate to see him go there. Doesn't seem like their style though to spend big $$ on a FA. We'll see though.

If this were to happen, we'd better give our offensive lineman guns to fend off that d-line.

I agree. And the thought of Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, and Albert Haynesworth on the same defensive line makes me want to go hide under my bed.
