Allegedly one is a Lion and one is a Raider. I put this here because potentially the other missing one could be any other NFL team, including our own. |

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
I live close to Va. Beach and every now and then we have someone going out in a boat despite warnings and it ends in tragedy. It's a shame.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Bad deal. Pray for these guys.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Lets hope there is a happy ending but it does not look good at this point. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and to the Raider and Lion organizations.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
I hope for a happy ending, but these things never seem to go well... I really hope for the best here.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
I used to do a lot of fishing in the gulf when I lived in SW Fl. The weather and water conditions can change in a matter of minutes. I pray these guys are OK. a 21' craft should not have much trouble in a moderate chop. Unless it was a flats. keep these guys in your prayers tonight.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Hopefully they are just lost or out of fuel. Coast guard sould find them before to long. Hope for the best
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
I heard them say on ESPNews that the boat they were in was a 21footer...and was almost unsinkable. Let's hope they find them soon. I hate seeing stuff like this happen, i'm sure they will turn up sooner or later.

Damn, here's to hoping.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
From my experience on the water I'd say the boat has either flipped, filled with warter, or they have lost total power. The reason I say that is I would hope that the boat had a working VHF radio and if they where simply lost they would have had radio contact with them. There is also a chance they don't have a VHF radio on the boat but that would be just crazy. I personaly have two VHF radios. One is a mounted VHF (which if the boat flips on takes on alot of water is useless) and the other is a hand held which floats and is water proof. Both of my VHF radios have a distress button which is pretty standard and when activated sends a signal to all boats, CG, etc... with our location. The reason for the hand held is if the boat sinks I have a back up. The News said it was a foam filled boat so the boat should not sink which is really the only good news so far from this story and could be what saves their life.

Hoping for the very best outcome. Unfortunately, most all of these stories end in tragedy.

Well the good news is that unlike our area hypertherma (spelling) should not be an issue in the warm golf waters. |
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
In a wierd kind of way I hope that they ended up in Cuba or something and they are still alive. At least then there is a possibility of return.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
FD, I really don't know anything about boating-it sounds like you do, so let me ask you with all of the hi-tech locating tools (GPS, sonar and any others), and assuming these guys weren't sparing any expense, what ways can they search for them? It seems like on land, with a cell phone and permission, the government, or "google lattitude", can find locations pretty quickly nowadays. Anything like that for sea-faring vessels?

Cell phones are pretty useless as we can loose singnals while we can still see land. The best thing on the water is an epirb which is manditory on just about all boats except for personaly used boats. If they had an epirb on the boat the coast guard would have located them pretty quick They send out a single that is picked up by anyone who has radar on and shows up as a distress signal. Next would be a VHF radio which most of them now days have a distress button which gives out a distress over the radio with you location. The problem with the VHF is that its is only good for about 10 to 20 miles so anyone within that distance would pickup the distress signal over their radio. They also have hand held VHF radios now with GPS tracking but that is pretty new and only one company makes them. I just got one last week to have as a back up unit and it also gives you extra comunication if the boat sinks taking the boats VHF down with it. I just went over to a boating site and from what I read on a thread there its not looking to good for these guys. I din't know but the waters there are around 60 deg. and the winds kicked up 10 to 13 foot seas over night. |
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
sad to hear, but thanks for the info.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
the vhf and uhf radios i work with go a lot farther than 20 miles, but i'm not sure they're available commercial... aircraft avionics though, and the total system weight/size is pretty tiny.

One of the boaters found clinging to boat.

They can go farther but from a boat to boat or a boat to land the signal gets blocked. Now the taller the boat and the higher the antena will increase the distance. |

COAST GUARD FINDS BOAT WITH PERSON CLINGING TO IT
Posted by Mike Florio on March 2, 2009, 12:29 p.m. In the end, it might be a very good thing that the Coast Guard opted not to call off the search for the four men (and two NFL players) who went missing at sea in a 21-foot fishing boat. According to Bay News 9, the Coast Guard has found an overturned boat with a person clinging to it. Assuming that it was the same boat that was carrying Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, Lions defensive end Corey Smith, Nick Schuyler, and William Bleakely, it is a sliver of good news amid a tragedy, because it means that three of the men have been lost. Stay tuned for more. UPDATE: The person who has been found reportedly is Nick Schuyler. |
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Just heard it on the news. Does'nt sound good for anyone but Schuyler at this point.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
It's even more of a shame if they weren't wearing life vests.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Apparently the boat has been found and one person has been found on the boat.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Apparently Schuyler is alive and talking to the coast guard, so maybe he will be able to help in the search. I hope they find them.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
man life vest or not...you'd think it'd be hard to survive floating in the water overnight wouldn't you? I'm not that experienced of a waterman myself, but I think that it would still be dangerous. I've got it on ESPN news all day here at the house. I"ll write something if I hear anything.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
The fact that there was only one person still clinging to the remains of the boat that went out says that it is time for a few prayers for the other passengers.
Finding only one survivor with the boat is not the best of news... |

Well, if they had life vests and the boat to hold on to, I wouldn't think it would be too hard to make it through one night. The water off the gulf coast in SW Florida is pretty warm. I'm guessing they weren't wearing their vests when the boat flipped. Regardless it's a really sad situation. |

Well the seas that night were around 13 to 15 feet from what I read. Staying with a boat in those conditions was probably pretty tough. If the other guys had on life vest there is still a good chance they are still alive. |

Oh wow. I didn't hear that. That's really rough. |
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Man I hope they find the other three guys. What a horrible situation. If the other three didn't have life vests on I doubt they would make it, they wouldn't be able to stay afloat for very long and they'd probably try too hard to compensate and end up tiring faster.

re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
Man, I cannot imagine what they were thinking. It was very windy all along the Gulf Coast for several days now
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
not looking good fellas, life vests or not, 2 days in the water...I just don't see how somebody could survive that long.
|
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
According to the paper today 18 hours in water of that temperature (around 65 degrees) would lead to hypothermia. As we've exited that window you have to start perparing yourself for the worst, barring a miracle.

Wow you have to read this about these men that went out on the boat.....That is really out there! |
re: Updated: Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing NFL Players
they've called off the search at 6:30 PM tonight (Tuesday the 3rd.) I am to assume they are to declare them dead. It was been a couple days and they have not been found. Such a sad sad story.
I'm curious as to what they were doing so far out in the ocean! It said they were around 30 miles off the coast when they were capsized. I really hope by some miracle they get found, it's so sad. |

The conditions where the key factor in this tragedy from everything I've read about this story. It is hard to believe they just gave up on there lives and drifted off to there death, sad. I hope there bodies are found, but thats about a 50/50 shot at best, so the families can lay them to rest. |
