Compensatory Picks
Compensatory picks
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick. If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections"). Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft. my question to you all is how many do you think we'll get this year |
Re: Compensatory Picks

Pierson Prioleau (maybe Vernon Fox, I don't think so though) |
well last year which of our FA's got signed elsewhere?
um Pierson Prioleau, Reche Caldwell, David Macklin (but the latter two I don't think ever saw the field by the Rams, in fact I don't think they made it past training camp) |

Didn't we get one for Sean...R.I.P. |
Re: Compensatory Picks
I was under the impression that qualifying FA meant draft picks that have been lost after their contract years. Dockery got us that extra third, and that was based on the huge contract the Bills gave him. We shouldn't expect any comp picks this year.

It only applies if you have players leave via free agency and he didn't leave our team like that. |
Re: Compensatory Picks
I don 't think we'll get any comp. picks. I think the only person we lost that counts is Prioleau and he made less than $500,000 last year on a one year contract and the lowest contract number last year that warranted a pick was around $900,000.

Re: Compensatory Picks
Oh ...well we'll see what happens
|
Re: Compensatory Picks
there's a guy that predicts these picks with like 99% accuracy on KFFL's forums.
I doubt we get any though. every year someone starts spouting up about how we're going to take this guy with our 3rd round comp pick, and this other guy with our 4th comp pick... just don't assume we're getting any, cause we didn't lose anyone to a big contract last year. |
Re: Compensatory Picks
Looks like the Redskins get a seventh round compensatory pick.

Here's the total compensatory pick chart:

Re: Compensatory Picks
7th rounder 243, not bad considering we got horton at 249, so what kind of player would be around that has shown some impact, but is projected in the 7th round??

Just about the same type of guys we can get as undrafted free agents. |

Why not? We only have one and he's no spring chicken. |
Re: Compensatory Picks
We get a 7th for Mark Brunell
|
Re: Compensatory Picks
Amazing isn't it!

Is it for Brunell or Pearson Preilou? |
Re: Compensatory Picks
I thought I had an idea of how comp. picks work, but I was surprised to see we got one for Brunell. Was it because we traded for Brunell, i.e. he wasn't a fa signing here?
I was under the impression that signed free agents that then leave to other teams via free agency aren't conisdered for comp. picks. |
Re: Compensatory Picks
My bad. It is for Brunell. I thought I read somewhere the only chance we had for one was Preilou. :smashfrea

At least you spelled his name right. :) |
Re: Compensatory Picks
So which teams have now alot of picks including comp picks, who might entertain trade up scenarios? Do the Lions, Vikings, Giants etc... have enough picks to seriously consider trading (their normal picks) and move up to get targeted players in the draft?
|
Re: Compensatory Picks
I say we use this pick for a place kicker.

Well it would either be on louie sakoda or pat macaffee...both I like as competition...also dan Kelly of Hawaii is very good IMO and isn't expect to get drafted |

I like Louie. At this point i'm an upgrade from Suisham. At the same time is it worth it drafting a kicker. Like you stated Kelly isn't expected to get drafted so why waste the few picks that we have. |
