Redskins resign Doughty
Per NFL.com the Skins resign Reed to one year deal.
The Washington Times is reporting that the Redskins have re-signed unrestricted free-agent Reed Doughty to a one-year deal. Doughty began the 2008 season as the starter, but eventually lost his job to Chris Horton because of injuries. Doughty spent most of last season on the injured reserve after undergoing back surgery on Oct. 31. |

yay?

Good veteran to have around...for cheap. You never know what could happen with the health of other starters.

God bless the guy and his family because he seems like a great guy and family man. ...ok, now that I've appropriately prefaced that...this guy sucks!...I cannot stand having this guy in the lineup. Too many times he was exploited by opposing offenses and it was unbearable to watch. He's a great team player and showed a lot of guts when playing. I dislike watching him on the field for us. |

Don't worry Skinny i bet Doughty doesn't take a snap on d even if he does make the final roster. He'll be special teams specialist at best. Btw i've heard Moore is looking better and better as a FS, not that he'll take anything from Landry but I wonder if he (Moore) goes to FS in Cobra package so both Landry and Horton can roam up close to the LOS. |

His first game starting in his place (Dallas I think) he looked bad, but afterwards was solid. And last year he was hurt. The guy is all heart and effort, but definitely lacks raw athleticism and ability. Great locker room guy, very high character.... and also our 4th safety behind Landry, Horton, and Moore. I hate bringing it up, but does anyone else ever think about how absurd our defense would be right now with Sean still here?? Sheesh. He'd most likely be the best safety in the league, or close to it with Polamalu and Reed. He'd be far and away the best safety in the NFC. Anyway, just thinking out loud, I'd rather not take the thread in that direction. |
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
GMScud, you are right about what could have been. What a tragedy for so many reasons.
Doughty has great heart and I love that. Otherwise he is...so...painfully...slow. |

Of course a lot of people have that image of him being burned by Larry Fitz, but then again he's the best wideout in the league. |

It was a clear cover one "Angel" scheme called, with Doughty underneath, and that's why he was running with Fitz.
He's so unbelievably slow though. I make that throw for a TD, easy ;) |
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Smart pick up. We know that our defense works with him in the line up. I'm sure he signed for a min contract and he will have to compete for a job. He is a smart player, good on special teams, and a good tackler.
|
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Good move for depth and teams.
|
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
He is painfully slow and in my opinion a below-average tackler, however he IS football smart and hopefully that and his leadership will rub off on our "young" group of starting players of the secondary.

to me Reed looked like a marginal player at best |
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
I dont really know if Doughty is versitile enough of a player to have resigned. He, like Horton, can only play Strong safety. Kareem Moore can only play FS. Landry mostly played at FS last year, but is better suited to be a SS. IMO we are pretty thin at FS right now and we would have been better off signing a marginal FS safety than a marginal SS one.

Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Surprising...I thought he had played his last skins game. Anyway...he's an okay backup and special teamer. If he beat out Horton and became the starter then i would say we had problems.

Re: Redskins resign Doughty
By the way, how cool is it that Dave Butz Jr. is Doughty's agent?

I don't mean to quible but, Doughty and Horton played both SS and FS during pre-season and Horton saw action last year during games at FS for a few plays when Landry was blitzing. So i don't think your statement is accurate. Doughty and Kareem Moore also saw action last year in the Cobra package as SS/LB/CB hybrids. Landry has always been a FS, he only played SS b/c Taylor (rip) was a Pro-Bowl FS. With Landry, Horton, Doughty and Moore i'm happy with the depth at Safety, my only concern is with Doughty's injury i wish they could have found a way to keep Springs b/c he was an insurance policy at S. :food-smil |
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
This guy is so slow it hard to watch. Thats really just repeating what everyone else said I'm not sure how fast he is but I needed to feel like a part of something this afternoon.
|
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
I also agree that he is wasting a roster spot. He has no upside. Is having him on special teams really worth the roster spot?
|
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
I agree with pocket straight...dont feel sorry for just because be couldn't find another job, plus it's a bunch of BS that he had other teams offer him a contract like reported

Yes. And so is Khary Campbell. |

I think Campbell is better than Doughty. I don't remember Campbell proving that he can't be a starter. If they do a good job with their draft picks this year, don't be surprised if Doughty is cut. |

Given depth needs, Doughty is a waste of roster space only if someone better emerges. I guess that the FO will bring in some other competition. If Doughty can hang, then he has improved (although you can't really improve speed like his). If he can't hang, then he's gone again. |
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
We needed the depth, just in case.

Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Hope he gets #37 back and doesn't have to keep giving it away next year. :D

We're all here to express our opinion and we dont always have to agree 100%. Like you, i wish we could have kept springs (to be our starting FS this year) but we couldnt keep him under his current contract. Neither Horton or Doughty can ever be counted on to play FS, though. Theyre both way too slow. Landry hasnt always been a FS - he's played both in his career. Hes very versatile. You forget that we drafted Landry specifically to play SS because we had Taylor and wanted him to play FS. that was our plan. The only reason Landry moved back to FS is because Taylor died and we had no other safety on our roster who could be a suitable FS. last offseason, it was our plan again to move Landry back to SS - thats why we picked up Stuart Schweigert, the starting FS from Oakland. The only problem was, he ended up being a bust... so we were forced to keep Landry as our starting FS and Doughty as our SS because they were the two best safeties on our roster. We drafted Kareem Moore (FS) and Chris Horton (SS) and when Doughty got hurt, Kareem Moore was hurt as well, so Chris Horton came in to play SS. If Moore had been healthy, its very possible, he would have come in and played FS and moved Landry to SS. Ever since we drafted Landry, we've been trying to get him to be our starting SS. However, due to death and injuries, he's never been able to spend significant time there. Horton had a great year last year, but i would be shocked if we dont try to move things around soon to put Landry back at SS where he can be more disruptive and make more plays and do all the things we envisioned him doing when we drafted him. |

Doughty like Smoot is a liability in coverage and gets picked on when they are on the field in the Defensive lineup. Doughty has to be protected in pass coverage by blitzing him or getting help in coverage. Basically he is a liability in coverage and he is not that great at supporting the run. The only thing he is half way decent at is blitzing. I think he had two sacks in one game two years ago and all of Doughty fans were ready to enshrine him. We can find another young safety that has upside. Doughty is - what you see is what you get. He is not going to get noticeably better. |

Re: Redskins resign Doughty
meh. hes 30. He'd be a backup/special teamer here and id rather have as many of those guys be youngsters. On the other hand, we do have an incredibly young secondary (starters and backups) right now so maybe we'd want some veteran leadership.

Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Says he brings toughness and leadership to the defense and special teams. If our gain contributes to the Cowgirls loss......why not?
|
Re: Redskins resign Doughty
Reed Doughty reminds me a lot of Archuletta. He's good against the run but sucks in coverage. If we use him to stop the run and rotate him with Horton for coverage it should work out well for us.

Archuletta before his injuries was 10 times the player that Doughty is. |

I wasn't talking about his injuries. What I was saying is that we didn't use him the same way the Rams did. |

I understand that. Both can't cover anybody but Archuletta with the Rams was extremely athletic and was a playmaker. He was useless as a starting safety with us just like Doughty. I know that some people seem to love this guy but I don't think that a guy who can make a few tackles on special teams should be on the roster. I would rather have a guy with some upside. Hopefully we nail the draft and Morroco Brown finds some gems so that Doughty gets pushed out. Then I know the talent evaluators are earning their checks. |
