If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
Thought I would try a new way to talk about the ownership of the Redskins and instead of just bashing the current owner why not ask posters who they would choose to be their new owner of the Skins and to state why.
So I will go ahead and say I would take Bob Kraft because he is willing to spend what it takes to build a winner but he also lets his football people run the team without interfering too much. |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
Dan Rooney. He doesnt spend a lot, doesnt fall in love with players and sign them to huge contracts, has players ready to step in and play as good or better than the high $ guy they let sign somewhere else, knows and understand the value of draft picks and the draft. Oh yea, six Super Bowls doesnt hurt either.

Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
I'd volunteer myself for the job. I'd be more than happy to hire actual football people to handle that aspect of the team. I'd be pretty content to sit back and collect the profits. I'd be completely willing to put this plan into action if you guys care to lend me $1.5 billion or so...
as far as the serious aspect of the question goes, it's hard to argue with Rooney. |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
Ted Leonsis. Why? Because he made the same mistakes Dan Snyder did, trying to buy a championship, but the big difference is, he learned from that mistake and allowed the professionals (professional being the operative word) to develop a plan, starting with the sell off of high priced veterans, and selling them off for draft picks, utilized smart drafting, and build the Caps on a long term success plan. Just look at the Caps. You have a free agent like Shaone Morrisonn for instance who decided to leave for a bigger contract, you have Karl Alzner, John Carlson, Joe Finely and other prospects int he wings waiting. Many NFL teams are like that as well, drafting smart, keeping draft picks as premium, and building success through rejuvenation. That doesn't happen at Ashburn.

Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
On March 4, 2008, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Roethlisberger agreed to an eight-year, $102 million contract.
Check out Ben's stats compared to JC's . NFL Stats: by Player Category Big Bens QB rating was 80.1 compared to JC's 84.3 I'd say that 102 million is kinda overpaying, wouldn't you? |

Good pick. The Leonsis story is a good one. Seems to have it together. I was thinking and Ted Turner came to mind. Not afraid to spend money, desparately wants to win, and is a smart dude. After thinking about it though he is too similar to DS. |

ben vs. jc ?
pfffffffffft ... super ..... bowl (x2) ....maybe next year |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
wald wrong thread i think buddy, this isnt a JC vs ______ thread. i could be wrong.
i would want jack kent cooke's family to own the team like what should have happened 11-12 years ago. that way fed ex field would have remained Jack Kent Cooke Stadium like it should be. (i would diss on DS for immediatley stripping the late great JCK of his crown jewel and monument for skins fans years to come to remember the man by but this isnt a bash DS thread . . . or is it?) go skins!! |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
Many of those mentioned would be far superior to Snyder. Pat Bowlen of Denver, as well. Jeff Lurie of Philadelphia. NY Giants ownership is a lot better. Steve Bisciotti of Baltimore. Outside of the NFL, I'd love to see Ted Leonsis buy the Skins. The list is very, very long.
I wouldn't want my favorite team owned by Bill Bidwill or Jerry Jones or the Ford family. Those are the only NFL ownerships I consider awful enough to be in the same class as Dan Snyder. |

I don't care if he wins 5 super bowls. If you're going to pay him like that for performance and he's got a sub 85 QB rating, well, then you're throwing away money. If you're a great organization like the Steelers, you could win those playoff games with someone else. The Roethlisberger deal is pretty ridiculous. It will look fine as long as they are winning, but once the victories dry up, he's going to be the most overpaid athlete in professional sports. |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
If I could pick any owner, it would be Rachel Phelps from Major League. Sure, she'd strip the roster down to lovable screwballs, but they would inspire themselves by looking at a cardboard cutout of her to make it to the Super Bowl.

Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
JOE GIBBS!
He is cut out of the same mold as Jack Kent Cooke for 1. Also, look what he did with Gibbs racing! I don't like Gibbs racing, but after Hendrick Motorsports, Gibbs is mentioned as a quality owner, and someone everyone respects. Joe has a knack for knowing what is right, and he won't be sold on "whims". He is level headed with a committment to excellence, and has a clear cut love for the Skins. These are all win / win scenarios for us and IMO no one would be a better fit. (of course I doubt he would buy it, but I didn't think that mattered in this question) |

Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
I'm pretty sure Snyder has learned his lessons, if we're going to make a big splash via free agency or a trade, the players are always young or at least in their prime like Haynesworth. Cutler is a young superstar at the most important position. We had to do due diligence on him just like the other 10 teams that investigated it. Yes, it is true that we probably had the best current quarterback situation out of those teams, but so what? The asking price was too high, and we backed off.
A whole lot of drama about nothing. Campbell already knew we weren't fully committed to him by his lack of a contract extension. If anything this may be just the thing that sparks him to break out, along with this being his second year in the system. The stars always rise to the occasion when they are doubted and prove the nay-sayers wrong. Well I guess now we will get to see if Campbell is the real deal or not, and I personally couldn't be happier. |

Having JKC's family own the Skins would be a victory for justice as well as a boon for the team itself. Otherwise, Rooney is a good choice but I'd go Kraft. His record speaks for itself. |

The steelers number one defense puts them in position to win. Not Big Ben and his 17 interceptions. |

He's more of a playmaking type of guy who just gets the job done. It may not look pretty, he may not run the play how it was designed but he just gets it done when it matters. That's the difference between the two right now. Oh yeah he's been the QB on two SB winning teams. |

 Good one, but other than that little nugget I like the way he builds through the draft, and doesn't hold on to players too long, and has great personnel people. |
Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
In some aspects I like Jeff Loria (owner of Florida Marlins). It delights me that one of the lowest payrolls in MLB makes it farther than NYY or BoSox.
He runs the team like a business that is focused on 2-3 years down the road, always. You never hear them signing expensive guys, they develop great home grown talent. Whadya think? |

Re: If you could name a new owner for the Redskins who would it be and why?
Mike Brown, Donald Sterling...then maybe people would recognize that there are far worse owners out there. Farrrrr worsssse.
And the Capitals' comparison is weak. First off, hockey has a minor league system where players can develop and secondly people don't really care as much about the NHL. People seem to think McPhee was just hired last off-season. The Capitals have first rounders from the past four seasons that haven't done anything in the NHL. We have a 6th round QB from last year that people are already wondering when he will start. |
