Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Now that the Cutler and JC trade talk is over. Let's try to reflect on some good times, and discuss why we chose to be a fan of the Redskins
For me personally it was a family tradition, it was what we claimed as our football birthright. As kids, we did everthing to emulate our favorite Skins players. Also, I liked the way they played "Redskins brand" of football. It was very blue collar, and hard nosed. It wasn't fancy, nor was it flashy. They just went out and took you behind the wood shed and beat the piss out of you. And it didn't hurt any to have the greatest sports rivalry with the much hated cowboys. What say you? |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I always thought that people rooted for their hometown team, I guess things have changed.
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I was just born that way just like you, and hopefully generations to come :) HAIL
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
It's not something you choose, it's something that chooses you.
I honestly believe that. You can't "choose" to be a fan of a team. You're just drawn to them for some reason, and if you're a real fan you feel a passionate connection that you can't get away from, no matter how many losses they ring up. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I started liking the skins back in 89 because i knew one day that there would be a website where i would have to defend the owner and explain to others that the lawn isn't always greener on the other side.

everyone in my family roots for Dallas YUCK!! I just was different I guess.... My brother is a Dolphins fan since we were born in Florida.

Same here, my dad loves the Cowboys, so i like the Skins. He likes the Mets and i like the Orioles. But i guess i like the Orioles because Mussina's mom worked with my gram and i got to meet him a bunch and go to some games in his seats. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Born at Georgetown University Hospital in DC, raised in NW DC, grew up going to games at RFK during the glory years of the late 80's early 90's... The rest is history. I love them and always will.
They were the first team I ever became a real fan of, followed shortly after by the Bullets, Caps, and Orioles. 2009 is the 10th anniversary of my love affair with my Florida Gators, and I must say, they have definitely moved up to 2nd in my heart just behind the Redskins. Cut me today and I may bleed burgundy and gold. Cut me tomorrow and I will probably bleed orange and blue. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I've been a hardcore Redskins fan since 1971, have been through good times, bad times, great times and dysfunctional times. I will never stop being a Redskins fan (this is for life) but I tell you what, it's been pretty challenging since Dan Snyder took ownership. My love for this team is like a family member and even if I'm 3,000 miles away and 27 years removed from the Maryland DC area, I will never ever stop loving this team. My hope is that good times will come again and I know they will, my patience has been tested many times lately and I'm hoping that I and many fans like myself will be rewarded soon.
HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, HAIL VICTORY!! |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I was 9 and was watching them on tv and the uniforms got me..then the players Charlie Taylor and Larry Brown were my favs and so many others thru the years . And that know I'm 46 I'll go to my grave be a Redskins fan. Its been like riding a roller coaster and all the feelings riding one.

So I notice you were born in Florida but you currently reside in Norman, OK. Who were you cheering for when the Gators beat "Big Game" Bob Stoops and the Sooners in January? |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I love this team but I really don't care for the owner or Vinny C. As Sfredskin fan said, they're like family. I can remember in 1977 when I was 7 years old and they started off 6-0 and ended up not making the playoffs. They were the hometown team and that's how it started for me. I've lived in the DC area my whole life so I follow this team closely.

It was #9, always Sonny, thow'in to Taylor and handing off to Brown! I grew up near Mt. Vernon, just outside of DC. Washington was crazy over the Skins, and I'm older than you! |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
It was either the Redskins or Broadway Musicals and I chose the Redskins. Do I ever regret my decision? Sometimes on opening nights, I ponder whistfully what might have been, but I've made my bed...

O dude I had to root for Florida!!! I love the Gators man but it's funny my wife just graduated from OU and she is still mad at me lol! I hope Tebow and the gators can win 3 out of 4 next year!!!! But I give mad props to OU because their Stadium And Fans are Amazing, and they have won 7 national titles so you can't hate on them too much. |

I've got nothing but love for Stoops. He got the OU job because of his performance as D-Coordinator under Spurrier at Florida. Florida's D sucked, and he came in and we won our first title in his first year coaching the defense. I actually met him a few times during offseasons in Gainesville. Super nice guy. I'm friends with the son of one of the bigger boosters for the Gators, so I had the opportunity to have a few beers in the company of Stoops and Ron Zook. Both really cool guys. Zook can drink with the best of them btw. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I became a fan around 1974 or so...I loved those old uniforms with the yellow pants.
I remember seeing the old bumper stickers on cars all over town, "I am for Sonny" or I am for Billy". Getting those free Redskins drinking glasses at Shell or was it Sunoco (?) gas station if you pumped 8 gallons or more. I still have a lot of them. 7-11 had those plastic player collectors cups. Even though the skins were not very good then, it was easy to become a fan. Sonny, Billy, a young Joe Thiesman returning punts, Larry Brown, Charlie Haraway, Roy Jefferson, Charlie Taylor, Jerry Smith, Chris Hanburger, Ron Mcdole, Diron Talbert, Coy Bacon, A young Dave Butz, Pat Fischer, MIke Bass, Ken Houston, Speedy Duncan... It was rewarding as a fan to suffer through those early losing years to later have George Allen take us to SB 7 (loss) and then the Gibbs/Bethard dynasty. I now relaize that for you fans that are too young to watch the Gibbs 92 SB win live, have suffered through 17 years of average to below average football. That is a long time. |

LOL yea Stoops is the Shit! Real cool and down to earth guy! But Honestly I think Urban is a little bit ahead of Bob, but stoops recruits so good that OU will be damn good as long as he is here! BTW Adrian Peterson is the coolest player I have met so far, it was funny how he always drove around in BMW'S and Benzes lol. |

Amen brother. Going to RFK was great. Dont like the new Stadium. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Many ways to become a fan, but id say 3 factors make it happen.
1. They're your hometown team, i grew up in newport news. Skins country nuff said. 2. Popular teams at the time. My 3 Bros were all viking fans, and they all grew up in the 70's. While i grew up in the mid 80's early 90 so have quite few local friends who were Cowboy and 49er fans. 3. You follow your Dads team. My dad was a casual fan, pretty much rooting for whoever is good atm. Maybe that explains the Viking fans in the house when i was little lol. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
My Dad worked in DC. Was a casual fan. I fell in love with Gary Clark- not afraid to go across the middle and mix it up for a little guy. Didn't hurt that the Skins were awesome back then. Boy its been awhile...

Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I never thought of it as a choice. After doing his part to defeat fascism, my grandfather settled in the DC area in the 1950's, adopted the Redskins as his team, gave birth to a Redskins crazy son who eventually gave birth to me. Where is the choice in that? To like another team would be basically like wearing a swastika while dancing on my grandfather's grave. I'm not gonna do that.

Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Is this a thread to make us all ask ourselves why we are STILL Redskins fans?? Believe me, it has crossed my mind many times. My mother-in-law asks me every Sunday night. (damn I hate that!) And, she is a Giants fan. BTW, would that be grounds for divorce- a Giants fan in-law???
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Fan since '91. Fantastic season. Gibbs. Muff said.
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I arrived to this country (and settled in the DC area) in 1990 and I learned about professional football by watching the Redskins, I have been a fan since then. I was lucky to witness the great 1991 season, capped off with team winning SB XXVI. Unfortunately, I did not get to experience RFK, and have only attended games at FedEx. The team has had many ups and downs, but I continue to be a fan regardless.

Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
well, i lived in DC when my dad worked at the Pentagon...Skins won the Superobowl with Rypien...and I was a fan every since...diehard. I use to wear the I root for two teams the redskins and whoever the cowboys play every day to school...that's dedication.

I hear you loud and clear. My family raised me on B&G but it was my Grandma who took me to my first football game, and if I were to ever root for another team she would hang me up by my balls. I swear you've never heard an 87 year old woman yell obscenities at the Cowboys like this but it's just great!! I honestly now think that it wasn't so much that she liked the Skins as much as it is that she just hates Dallas. They go hand in hand either way. Puts a smile on my face every time I think about it and I'd love for us to win one more Lombardi just for The Mimi. If not she'll be on the sidelines in heaven someday watching the Washington/Dallas game with her middle finger in the air screaming "you son of a bitch!" lol. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
started in 1970, when Lombardi came to town. boy, was it easy to be a fan back then. Coach Allen strolls into town, and it was on. the skins had all those love-able old guys who knew how to win. the rivalry was just beginning to get good. and so were the skins. 1972 was such a good time to be a fan. this, and my best friend is a die hard cowboys fan. but most are right. while i see Mr. Snyder as wanting to win, i guess he just doesn't know how. or putting the right football people in the right places
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I was a Skins fan before I was a football fan. I've known the words to HTTR since before I knew what a forward pass was. Before SBXVIII we had a pep rally at my elementary school and everyone was so Redskin crazy it was impossible not to live and die with them. To me, the Skins are like family.
I was a casual fan of the Bullets and Caps (went to a lot of games because my father's cousin worked at the Cap Center) but just never felt a passion for them. When I moved to NC I went to college a mile from where the Hurricanes were playing while the RBC Center was being built and now I follow them just as passionately as I do the Skins. I've given up on the NBA and now I'm one of those people who thinks the basketball season ends next Monday. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Dad's and most of the people I know around here are Eagles/Steelers fans. Just always liked the 'Skins, must be some kind of masochistic tendency.
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
Because I live in the DC area.
|
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
my grandfather was a #1 redskin fan. He was in the band in his younger days, and a season ticket holder of course. I was a 49ers fan when I was a youngster but he converted me. Now I am a diehard skins fan!!

I was only 10 years old when I got hooked. Just fell in love with them during SB XVII. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I was born and raised in Philly...but I loved the color red when I was a little kid of about 4 or 5 years old. My neighbor said to me "so what are you a redskins fan then?". I said yes and here we are 34 years later...

No, that is not the direction I was trying to go by starting this tread. But, I definitely see why you might infer that I may have started this thread for that reason. I'm not trying question anybodies fandom. I'm just trying to have people reflect on why they became a Skins fan, and share their fond memories that persuaded them to become a fan of the Skins. |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
I can't honestly say why I chose to be a die hard skins fan. I was born in 1971 in Northern NM, my entire family is either a Dallas or Denver Fan, according to my mom I started cheering for the skins when I was 4 so the switch was on and I have defended them ever since. I will say that I tend to rub against the grain and just cause someone jumps off the cliff doesn't mean I'm going to. I will bleed burgandy till death!
Outside of the skins living in NM I still remember times that were comical for Dallas fans, like the time they thought they would have an all Texas superbowl when Houston and Buffalo went to the AFC champ. game. Anyone remember that? After that buffalo comeback I was laughing for days! And to think it was Frank Reich that brought the bills back! The last great time for me down here was when Mark B. threw to Moss for those 2 touchdowns and we beat the Cowgirls 14-13. It was also nice to have won the last game in TX staduim, how does that taste Dallas fans? |
Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:
It was December '82. Like any other football Sunday I was with my father at a Lions game. I said enough. He said I could'nt switch teams. I did and never looked back.
