Redskins Innovations
 

I think that great NFL franchises like the Redskins, 49ers, Bears, etc are like great world civilizations such as the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Romans, etc in that they make contributions and innovations that not only advance themselves, but ultimately elevate and advance everyone else.

How have the great Redskins advanced football?

Off the top of my head I can think of two examples of great Redskin innovation:

1. Special Teams Coaching (George Allen was the first to have a separate coach devoted to Special Teams)

2. The Counter Trey (Gibbs era misdirection running play)


What are the other Redskin innovations?

I just thought of what might be a 3rd innovation from the Skins..Redskins Park. I'm not 100% certain about this, but Redskins Park may have been the 1st total football complex devoted to an NFL team.

[B]Gibbs is credited with inventing the single back, double or triple tight end set. He used it to neutralize Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor, realizing that to successfully block him with a running back was impossible; an extra tight end and a tackle were required. The extra tight end provided additional protection for the quarterback. Gibbs was also credited for creating the Trips formation; stacking three wide receivers to one side. Gibbs incorporated the shifting and motions for which his offenses were known for. The formations created mismatches and confusion for the opposing defenses that would then be exploited. He is also one of few coaches that utilized the H-back position prominently in his offense.[/B]

Sammy Baugh wasn't the first to make a forward pass but he is credited for making it an integral part of an offensive gameplan. Semi quoted from wiki.

Wow. It's amazing how pretentious some posters are. What is this some turned-based RPG? Do we need to gain experience and more hit points to start a thread? Stop treating a public message board like some esoteric, exclusive net-nerd club. This is a good thread, and the "noob" poster shouldn't be disparaged for it.

Yeah, I'd put this #1. The NFL is a passing league and it all really started with Sammy Baugh, the greatest Redskin of all time IMO. Waterfield, Graham, and other early great passers were copy-catting Baugh.

Other great Redskins firsts or lasts....

George Preston Marshall, owner that moved them from Boston was credited with the innovation of gala halftime shows, a marching band, and a fight song "Hail to the Redskins".
Marshall also suggested two major rules changes designed to open up the game and increase scoring which were subsequently adopted. One was to allow a forward pass to be thrown from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage, rather than at a minimum of five yards behind the line which was previously the rule. Another was the move of the goal posts from the end line to the goal line, where they were to encourage the kicking of field goals. This change remained in place for about four decades until NFL goal posts were returned to the end line in the mid-1970s as part of an effort to lessen the influence on the game of kicking ...

However, he is [B]best known [/B]for his intractable [B]opposition to having African-Americans on his roster[/B].
While the rest of the league began signing individual blacks in 1946 and actually drafting blacks in 1949, Marshall held out until 1962 before signing a black player. Moreover, the signing [B]only came when Interior Secretary Stewart Udall issued an ultimatum – unless Marshall signed a black player, the government would revoke the Redskins' 30-year lease on the year-old D.C. Stadium[/B] (now Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium), which had been paid for by government money and was owned by the Washington city government (which, then and now, is formally an arm of the federal government). Marshall's chief response was to make Ernie Davis, Syracuse's all-American running back, his number-one draft choice for 1962. Davis, however, demanded a trade, saying, "I won't play for that S.O.B." He got his wish, as the team sent him to Cleveland for All-Pro Bobby Mitchell. Mitchell was the first African American football player to play a game for the Redskins,He was the last hold out owner who refused to have black players. He was threatened with being stripped

Wow, very informative. I had never heard that story. That's interesting about Ernie Davis with his autobiographical movie coming out last year and all.

Sammy Baugh himself was an innovation, from being the first great passer in the sport, to setting the bar for an all-around player on offense, defense and special teams. Sure, back in the day, many players lined up on both sides of the ball, but no one ever did it as well as Sammy. Many since then have tried to imitate, such as Deion Sanders, none have been able to succeed.

1.) I wouldn't really be proud of the sellout streak after the Pittsburgh game.

I almost forgot about that one. Didn't she also contest the will and try to get more money....or something like that? I just remember it got ugly between her and one of JKC's sons in regards to settlement.
