Former Top 5 pick seeking return to NFL

Mike Williams, #4 overall pick in 2002 by the Bills to fill their RT position has been out of football since injuries forced him to quit in 2007. He is trying to get back into the league and is working out and living with Derrick Dockery in NoVa. Should we bring him in to camp as a camp body and hope he can provide some quality depth at the T position?

Vet min, maybe. Perhaps he's gotten his act together and will surprise. Maybe not.

Best of luck to him.

What do you mean gotten his act together? What did he do?

Maybe he's thinking of the WR Mike Williams from USC. No that he was really all that thuggish from what I remember.

Come to think of it, he might be fat enough to play RT these days.

I would sign him with incentives. If he and Dock are friends he should be willing to come on board as he has a close friend to help him get up to speed quicker.

Re: Former Top 5 pick seeking return to NFL

It doesn't make sense for us because we have limited roster space at the OL position, and a strong need for talent.

I'm surprised the Bills didn't try him inside first like the Raiders did with Gallery. The reason OTs rarely bust out of the NFL is because if you move them inside, you're bound to find something they can do well. So he's likely worth a shot as a guard for some NFL team.

He's worth considering. I wouldn't mind giving him another chance.

They did and he got injured. I personally would love to add him. Though he does seem a little to slow and if I remember right the WCO favors quicker OL.

However according to the article this doesn't seem like to much of a strech. Vinny loves Longhorn alum and Dockery will probably vouch for him.

After long days and nights of mulling a return, Williams, who turned 29 in January and says he is financially secure, decided he would make an effort. Early this year, he headed first to a training program in North Carolina before moving to suburban Washington. There he and his wife are house guests of former Longhorns teammate, offensive lineman Derrick Dockery, a Garland Lakeview product who plays for the Redskins, and his wife.

At times, Williams, who says he is at his previous playing weight but might still like to shed 20 pounds, and the relatively svelte 6-6, 345-pound Dockery work out together in the gym. But when Dockery heads off to the Redskins training facility, Williams works alone. He says he hasn't missed a day.

Even more reason to sign him. This could be a steal.

I can think of only one time that we couldn't tell pretty quickly if someone wasn't going to be a waste, and that was Earthquake. Some posters have gone from good to bad, but he's the only I can recall that went from bad to good.

I didn't mean that he had gone Pacman and I am not referring to the wideout. I should have used different words, like "healed." Sorry.

Michael D. Williams (born January 11, 1980 in Dallas, Texas) is an American football offensive tackle currently playing for the Washington Redskins in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills out of the University of Texas with the fourth overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft. Weighing 360 lbs, Williams seemed destined to be the anchor of the AFC's heaviest offense. But, in hindsight, many observers now consider the Tom Donahoe's decision to draft Williams to be one of his biggest mistakes as Bills GM.

While he provided fair run blocking on the right side, Williams failed to show a flair for pass blocking and remained an unpolished player. Due to continued woes on the Bills' offensive line, Williams was moved by the coaching staff to left guard in order to assess his talents on the inside of the line. This tryout, though, was cut short by Williams' semi-frequent injuries.

After the 2005 season, Williams was cut. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 14, 2006 but was placed on injured reserve on August 29, ending his season.

On April 24, 2009, he was signed by the Redskins.

Yup. It seems that in the worst case he's a camp cut and in the best scenario he finally shows why he was a #4 overall pick, much to our advantage.
