It seems the idea of a Super Bowl in London has gone beyond the rumor stage into something more substantial.

I, as a German and European, whose chances of attending a Superbowl in England would be much higher than attending a Superbowl in the U.S. of a A. say: screw that idea. A reg season game is enough, way more anyone could´ve hoped for. But the superbowl belongs only to the home country. Period!

While im sure the game would sellout, make ton of money(blah blah blah), i don't really consider football an international sport as in the players and viewerbase is like 99 percent usa. I could see this concept work in other sport(basketball, hockey, baseball) where clearly the players and fans are more diverse.

Even after saying that i could care less where they play it, the average fan doesnt go to the superbowl, and the one who can travel before across the united states wherever can prob go across the seas with np to see game too.

99% is a bit high nowadays where there are a lot of leagues outside U.S. Yes, the best of them could maybe compete at low college/highschool level, but you shouldn´t underestimate the amount of players and fans outside of the U.S.A. I would even get as far as I´d estimate that it pretty much equals out on pure amateurs (meaning players outside schools and pro-leagues).

I love the idea. Wembly stadium is beautiful. Then again it would be the first cold weather Super Bowl in a long time.

Your right they're are lot of international football leagues, in fact i just read an article bout a Chinese allstar team that subbed in players from another area to gain an advantage. I was talking bout players in the NFL and actual hardcore fans of the NFL.

Absolutely horrible idea; the game doesn't have to be prostituted to earn a few more bucks. You're dealing with flying all of the players, coaches, equipment, etc over and dealing with them adjusting to a different schedule and in a lesser way, different customs.

Outsourcing the Super Bowl is just ridiculous, sometimes you have to look at a proposition that would earn more money and say, "Hey, this isn't how we want do do this" but Goodell doesn't seem to understand this.

If we are going to send the game over seas to play in shitty weather, why not just play it here in shitty weather? Who wouldn't love to see a superbowl in Greenbay, Washington, NE, NY, etc?

LOL!!!! I grew up playing soccer through college and now coach it. It is a great sport but will never have the pull here that it does overseas just like American football will never have the pull overseas.
Soccer fans are insane! I was in a pub Manchester back in 2000 and they decided to play the Brazilians and got absolutely smacked. I really thought that something would burn that night.

The MLS is getting better but our best teams cannot even compare to the level of talent in England, Italy, Spain, or Brazil.

I hate having a regular season game there every year. Why the owners don't complain more about losing a home game is beyond me. The only way I'd like foreign country games is if the NFL switches to a 17 game season and each team has 8 home, 8 away and one overseas game. And no Super Bowls!

Hate the idea. As Bill Simmons put it, the Superbowl should be held in three and only three places: San Diego, New Orleans, and Miami. My personal touch would be to make it Saturday night. I think the SB is big enough that it would draw big ratings on a Saturday night. Or another alternative to hold it the Sunday before a holiday (i.e. MLK Day or something). It sucks to have it on a regular Sunday, b/c it goes on until late and I have to work the next day.

Three points here:


Point #1. The TV Networks are not going to like this idea even a little bit. Assume that you start the game at 9:00 PM in London, that would make it 4:00 PM in the Eastern Time Zone and 1:00 PM on the West Coast. Now since the networks want to have a 5 or 6 hour pre-game extravaganza - - where they make a lot of money on ads - - that means it would have to start at 7:00AM or 8:00AM on the West Coast. Ad rates for beer ads at 7:00AM would have to be "discounted". The adage "Follow the money!" applies here... This is a big hurdle.


Point #2. I believe there is an NFL Rule that the Super Bowl has to be played in a city with an NFL franchise. My recollection is that rule was passed in the mid-90s and that is the reason that the Super Bowl doesn't go back to the Rose Bowl - - where there are 105,000 seats for the league to put fannies in. This is a medium sized hurdle at the moment because if the NFL wants a Super Bowl in London they could put a franchise there - - or they could try to change the rule. Changing the rule requires a positive vote of the owners AND THAT LEADS TO ...


Point #3. An owner with a big stadium in a cold weather city without a dome who REALLY would love to host a Super Bowl - - let's call him "Danny" just for kicks - - MIGHT figure a way to trade his vote and maybe the voting bloc of other like-minded owners for getting some cold weather Super Bowls here in the US in cities such as Boston, NYC, Philly, Washington, Chicago ... Right there you have six teams (2 in NYC) that could be the start of a voting bloc; Toss in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincy and you are starting to develop a powerful voting bloc. Therefore, if you want to have the possibility of seeing a Super Bowl in FedEx, you should support this idea and encourage "Danny" to start politicking and making nice with some of the other owners.


This is still a longshot, but it is better than no shot...

Hell no. The Super Bowl is one of the greatest AMERICAN events of any kind...to allow a foreign country to host it, to get the revenues from it, and to restrict the availability of tickets to American fans who support the league all season long...it's a horrible idea in EVERY way.

Soccer will always be more popular than real football in Europe. We should just accept that and bolster the fanbase here at home. Doing this would lose many fans in my opinion.

I have never liked the rule that the SB has to be played in a warm weather city. Some of the most historic games in NFL history have been played in challenging weather. I understand that it can make the logistics more difficult, but, damn, ain't that why these TV execs make the big bucks? Think of all the memorable conference championship games played in inclimate weather. Yes, the game will be sloppy. Yes, it will probably lack firepower. That doesn't mean it will lack drama and, in fact, it may even heighten the drama.

Yeah, it kinda sucks you don't get to see the SB played anywhere but in a dome or warm weather. Money talks though and people with money, those who can afford the tickets, don't want to freeze their ass off. SB is not for the typical fan to attend anymore. I'm not even sure if it ever was.

I think it's time the NFL build a SUPER BOWL STADIUM. Which ever state gets it, they can use it for their own purposes, but the sole existance of the stadium is to host the Super Bowl. The walls can have the history of the game, and no matter what, it will always be neutral and in the USA. I orginally thought that Hawaii should get it every year, but they already get the pro bowl, and their stadium is too small. I'd still go for this, but they need to renovate the stadium.

The NFL would never do that as it would eliminate the fact that cities bid millions of dollars to get the Super Bowl. Paying to build a stadium as well as loosing the bid money would hurt the league financially.

No it wouldn't, cause the LEAGUE would own the stadium, so every super bowl would bring in BIG bucks. I get that cities bid millions, and that is a good answer as to why not, but I would wager that the NFL would gain more money if they owned the stadium.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the revenue the NFL would get from other teams playing in their stadium throughout the year. (whether it be college, high school or whatever)
