Gibbs NOT a good loser

but then, who would ever want him to be. certainly not me. Norv was a good loser.

did you guys notice Gibbs COMPLETELY brush Parcells off at the end of the game with the handshake?

Gibbs looked away and made for the lockerroom just before their hands even met. he was PISSED. we watched it on slow mo Tivo repeatedly. i think Parcells understood, cuz he handled it pretty decently, but it showed just how much Gibbs wanted this game.

Parcells was happy with himself for getting under Gibbs' skin and Gibbs couldnt even look at him. it was SO painful to watch. ugh, Parcells still have Gibbs' number?? :screama:

SUNRA 09-28-2004 12:00 PM

Parcells doesn't have anything that belongs to Gibbs. This man will work day and night to get this offense in the high powered scoring numbers it is capable of. Gibbs still has a Superbowl more than Parcells and is already in the Hall of Fame. I know he wanted the fans to have this game more than himself. He sees and reads the medias's biased view of the Redskins and feels our frustrations.

memphisskin 09-28-2004 12:12 PM

I think he was pissed at himself because this was such a winnable game and he kinda blew it with the clock management and the attempt at the no-huddle. He'll get it together, there were two drives when the offense started to click and you can see how the timing in the running game was starting to come together.

I think Parcells does have his number in that he does some things that frustrate Gibbs. Gibbs wanted to get a big play desparately, hence all the deep balls early, and not being able to hit on any of them really ate at him. But it's coming, the longer these guys work together the more you can see them starting to gel. It will take time, probably up until the bye week, but we'll come together this season (provided Brunell can stay healthy).

I definitely feel better about the direction of the offense at this point of the season even being 1-2 as opposed to last year when we started 2-1.

MTK 09-28-2004 12:19 PM

He shook his hand, who cares if he didn't look at him.

First LaVar is having too much fun in the box and now Gibbs wasn't a gracious enough loser.

Yawn

illdefined 09-28-2004 12:28 PM

kinda opposite observations on them really. the point is NO ONE on our team should be taking losses well, its good to see that both LaVar and Gibbs don't.

MTK 09-28-2004 12:31 PM

I hear your point Ill, I guess I was just reacting to some things I've read on other boards where people were critical of Gibbs for not being a 'good loser'.

Sorry man, good point.

illdefined 09-28-2004 12:34 PM

aw no sweat. why in the hell would you want a 'good loser'? that just means they're USED to it.

Gmanc711 09-28-2004 12:53 PM

If there was a Cowboy fan watching the game with you last night, would you wanna go shake his hand and say good game. When the time expired, I threw my hat and banged on the wall. I think Gibbs handled it fine, EVERYONE really wanted this one.

redwagonskins 09-28-2004 12:59 PM

He's frustrated with himself because he's a professional and that is why we brought him back. He's not going to blame his players by rotating QB's evry two plays a la Spurrier. He sticks with guys and lets them break out of funks. You think Spurrier would have left Brunell in after his 0-7 streak? Gibbs blames himself and you can bet he'll be sleeping in Redskin Park this week watching tape and preparing for the Browns.
Who wants a good loser anyway? We've dealt with that for the better part of a decade now.

BIGREDSKINFAN63 09-28-2004 01:00 PM

jesus, mary, and joseph.what did you want him to do? give him a big fat wet one?they probably spoke before the game away from the cameras, and if they did'nt,i do'nt care.the only lesson you can learn from losing is the fact that you hate it like hell.can't say i'm much happier than gibbs now, especially after all those silly bullshit calls last night.but there are enough reasons the skins lost other than the zebras.poor clock management, and brain farts in play calling withstanding.the game is over,it's one of 16 time for the clevland browns.i can't wait till dec 26 in dallas.

the difference in being a COMPETITOR vs. a good SPORT. Parcells wouldve done the same exact thing. hope these guys battle it out for years to come.

Brute44 09-28-2004 01:46 PM

I think we can take a lot from this loss. First off Gardner IS a deep threat when the game is on the line. Secondly our offense is beginning to come together almost all around from Brunnel throwing a nice tight spiral, to Portis busting up the middle for 10, to our tight ends becoming desperately needed weapons. Our offensive line took a step back as did our defense, but you could argue that our best athletes weren't on the field for both units, Jansen= an extra second or two for Brunnel every down and Arrington= a tremendous pass rush threat at any time during the game and possibly even a big time play that could have won last nights game.
As for Gibbs being a sore loser, he and Parcells go way back. Remember 56, LT, of the Giants was the one who ended Theisman's career and because of that it took an additional two years to find the right QB in Doug Williams to win Gibbs next superbowl. Well we have a number 56 now, LA, and if he played last night would have been sent hunting after Vinny boy. Also Gibbs lost the NFC championship against Parcells in early 87. Gibbs said that he used to hate going up to the Meadowlands to play the Giants, from the fans to facing Parcells in his own back yard. I believe that Parcells is the only coach to have a winning record against Gibbs. So there is a lot of history between these two guys. Both Gibbs and Parcells have admitted to being friends off the field but when its time to coach the two wont speak to each other for years at a time. Put all that together overtop of the Skins Vs. Boys and you have one hell of a game. So just because Gibbs didn't look Parcells in the eye after the game, don't consider that sore, consider it a burning fire in the pit of Gibbs stomach that has been raging ever since he came back in January to win so bad and turn this franchise around that losing is not an option. And you better believe Gibbs has been waiting for this game ever since the schedules came out and to lose it knowing that it should have been won is hard to swallow. At least he shook Parcells hand after the game, not like Buddy Ryan who would run off the field after a loss not looking or talking to anyone. Now thats a sore loser. :thumb:

Who said LaVar was having too much fun in the box? That's retarded.

MTK 09-28-2004 02:03 PM

Gibbs takes losing hard, I can't blame him.

I can relate to a point, losing just isn't something to be accepted. I've walked away from games before without shaking hands with opponents, it's not meant to disrespect the opponent but at that moment I'm so furious with losing I can't stand to put on a happy face and shake someone's hand.

If you want to see a diss check out Gregg Williams, he jogged by Parcells and patted him on the shoulder, didn't even stop to shake his hand.

SmootSmack 09-28-2004 02:24 PM

The one thing I was kind of wondering about though is why was LaVar in the box in the first place. Barrow was down on the field with his teammates, why wasn't LaVar?

MTK 09-28-2004 02:33 PM

Maybe he was invited up there?

Maybe he's supposed to stay off his feet?

Who knows

JWsleep 09-28-2004 02:38 PM

Everyone on the team should hate losing as much as Gibbs. You have to hate it more than anything else; that's what drives a winner.

celts32 09-28-2004 03:03 PM

I was to mad to talk to anyone after that game last night so why would I expect anything different from coach Gibbs? He is the one who poured 7 sleepless nights into preparing only to watch a completely winnable game slip away. Anyone who yucks it up after a loss like that obviously does not have the same emotionaly invested in the team as I do.

SkinsRock 09-28-2004 03:33 PM

They said he was on crutches this week, so I'd guess that was it...

Hail to the Redskins 09-28-2004 03:45 PM

I have to say, when I saw it live, I was taken back... like .. WOW. It was clear, the fury and inner anger Gibbs had goin on.

but the reason is perfectly clear... on the Monday Night Countdown shows, I picked up some things about our fearsome leader...

1) The Dallas Cowgirls.

He LOVED making and carrying on the true HATRED that fueled this rivalry in the 80's. He wants to get the team back to that (it still is clearly in him). He knows it can be the ultimate motivational tool for a season, much less 2 games each year... wanting to be better than Dallas. For Dallas to beat him at home, especially due to a couple of "oopses" in his game-calling... makes him burn inside, just like us.

2) Bill Parcells

When Gibbs was hired, Parcells left him a message that said, "Does this mean we can't talk for 5 years?" Well, I guess he has his answer, seeing as how Joe hasn't answered him or spoken to him (including last night) yet. He knows you can't be friendly with the enemy... you'll lose that edge, that fire to beat them... and trust me that's how he sees Parcells as the Cowgirls coach.

Also, when asked what he thought of Parcells, one of the first things he said was, "He thinks he is a great coach, and I guess he has shown that he is." Now, I think it's prety obvious that there is something beneath the surface there impying he thinks Billy Tuna is a little inflated when it comes to his ego. I mean, you KNOW there is a HINT of animosity there for Gibbs just because Parcells has "had his number" during his career. He knows that his legacy is on the line this time around... and that Parcells could step past him on that top 5 list of all-time coaches if he continues this trend.

So... all in all... it is really clear why Gibbs would HATE having to shake his hand after the game, DEFINTELY not wanting to conceed that he had been beaten by the Chicken of the Sea... but as the class act he is... he at least went through the motions and met him at midfield... I guarantee you boys, no matter how angry we are about last night, the man in the black hat with a red "R" emblazoned on it... is BURNING UP over this one...

skins009 09-28-2004 06:03 PM

Shit i would be pissed too if the refs spotted the other team 14 points like they did on monday night. We deserved to win that game.

MTK 09-28-2004 06:16 PM

Check out this video clip to see how overblown the Gibbs handshake stuff is, he looks right at Parcells before they shake hands, it was hardly the big blowoff that some people are saying.

Gmanc711 09-28-2004 07:30 PM

Anyone remember losing a high school football games. Then you get in the two lines and slap hands and everyone who won is like " good game , good game " and when you lost you didnt say a word just walked through?
