Need an NCAA team to follow...

Ok, short and sweet. I have always followed pro football, never really got into college sports. I went to a tech school so there's no allegiance or anything. I refuse to root for Penn St because everyone around here does. I want to start watching CFB this year but need a team. I don't want to root for any of the really heavy hitters (Texas, Michigan, Florida, etc) since that would be some front running b.s. Basically, I'm looking for a team that runs the spread or some other creative offense. Right now I'm thinking of Texas Tech or Boise St... I want to start researching early enough to pick a team for this year. Any suggestions?

You probably root for Afghanistan in the Olympics too, just to spite all those America homers you must run into. Seriously, I was so pumped up to open this thread and lay out my reasons for supporting Penn State...and then I read your third sentence. Now I'm wondering if you rooted for England during Braveheart :)

I'll plug my alma mater, the Richmond Spiders. Coming off their first NCAA division 1 AA national championship!

Yeah they're 1 AA, or baby D1, but they're good. And no other college has the Spider for its mascot.

I loved my racing swim suit, navy blue with a white embroidered Spider right on the right ass cheek. Well, I loved it as much as a guy can love a speedo, I guess.

LSU is really a fun team to watch/follow. The SEC is where it's at. Easily the best conference and competition, imo. I'm also a Michigan fan even though they're terrible now and I love Tulane because I went there, but they may get their program cut in the near future. So, I would recommend LSU, if you can ever make it to a game down there, I would highly suggest it. Their fans are crazy and really committed to their team.

Re: Need an NCAA team to follow...

LSU and OU are way too huge. I always liked Arizona State, plus Pat Tillman went there... When I've watched games over the last couple of years, it's always been fun to watch the smaller schools use the spread to close the gap.

If that's the case, when Dennis Dixon was the Q, Oregon was awesome to watch. I didn't have Fox Sports Pacific during last football season, but they're still an up and comer trying to use the spread to catch up to/bring down U$C.

How else did you think I got to be a Redskins fan in the middle of Eagles/Steelers country? :)

Do people really pick teams this way? Just seems like your choice needs to be a little more natural.

I know, it is a little weird, but I've never followed it and I have no allegiance whatsoever, which leaves something missing during watching the games. Like i said, if I had to pick right now, i'd say ASU, but I'm not entirely sure as to why. I liked the school and the fact that Tillman went there is very cool.

I was thinking the same thing. Just watch College Football and you'll end up liking teams. I just got into it a couple of years ago and I love watching it now, regardless of who's playing.

I cheer for both MD and Penn St. I too went to a school that doesn't have a football program. I cheer MD and Penn St. becasue one I live in MD and two my sister and BIL both went to Penn St. Actually instead of hating on the locals about their love for PSU join them. It is a lot of fun having local fans around. It gives you a lot of people to party with when you win and a lot of people to cry with when you lose. Plus PSU should be pretty good this year.

The U? You've never been to Miami a day in your life. How are you any different than a Cowboys fan from, say, Silver Springs?

I went to High School with Winston October, he was 3 years ahead of me at G-F. I looked up to him and I wanted to follow him to Richmond to play football, but it never panned out.

Edit: to stay on the Topic of discussion, I am a VT fan and have been ever sice I partied there while I was still in HS. The first college game that I ever went to was Homecomming 1996 at VT. The city and team just stuck with me. Frank Beamer helped too. I was a product of the VHSL and Frank uses mostly Virginia players with the belief that he can take a bunch of boys from VA and put them up against anyone using VA style of football and win a bunch of games.

West Virginia U. is an excellent choice and a rival of Penn State's. Another one of their rivals is Pitt. If you like offense, WVU is the way to go.

Calm down there cowboy. This thread has been all in fun so far so no need for you to be a grumpy gus;). Although I would be curious to know what reasonable connection to "The U" you have, and should none exist, how you are in anyway different than the aforementioned Silver Springs Cowboys booster who spurns the local team for no other reason than that he's a hater with a lump of coal for a heart.

And what's your favorite street in Miami?

i love that reference. and the only connection i have is/ was Moss, Portis, and Taylor. not really a big college football fan. and i just got back from south beach. my daughter played in a volleyball tourney there.

Okay, that makes sense.

As for the 30 pt whooping...that is true, however, they've alternated wins since Tebow got there. The last 3 years, the home team has won each game. They're playing at LSU this year ;)

Re: Need an NCAA team to follow...

my brother's been busting my balls on this for a week...arguing for PSU. They run the spread, I can actually go to the games, why can't I just root for the local team like everyone else.... etc. I'm going to try to follow that team, but good lord, they've traditionally been so damn boring to watch. I already get that on Sundays. ;-)

Silver Spring dude! Not Springs...sorry, minor pet peeve of mine :)

My favorite college football team is the Iowa Hawkeyes, though I've never stepped foot in Iowa. My dad went to "The U....of Iowa" so that's how I became a fan. But I'm not a diehard by any means, would rather just watch a good game.

Eh. Les Miles is the new Larry Coker. He did just fine with Nick Saban's recruits, much like Coker did well with Butch Davis' guys. They didn't look too great last year with Miles' first recruiting class at full maturity.
