Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Wow. This is definitely the toughest one yet. I think Lachey might be the most talented but his body of work with the Redskins is limited compared to say Jacoby and Samuels. I think I have to go with Big Jake. Jacoby, in many ways, redefined the position and the importance of a strong left-tackle. He was a man before his time

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Definitely a tough one but I went with Lachey. In his prime he was unbeatable, had his career lasted a few more years he's probably a HOF player.

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
They ask for the top one, instead of ranking them.
My ranking: 1) Joe Jacoby 2) Jim Lachey 3) Chris Samuels Those three are incredibly good. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
This has been a strong position for the Redskins and practically all of the guys listed are deserving. I will have to go with Joe Jacoby because of his longevity and versatility. He pretty much dominated most defensive ends. Jim Lachey would have been my other choice but Jacoby was a Redskin longer.

I agree. |

Jacoby

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Lachey probably was the a top 10 tackle of all time. but wasn't with the skins long enough. big Joe really revolutionized the position. Samuels is headed towards the hall with his stellar play. Starke, one of the original hogs( enough said) and May was a pro bowl caliber tackle. im not sure people realize how blessed the skins have been with offensive tackle play. i vote big Joe

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Lachey was awesome! As Matty said, if his career had lasted longer he's a HOFer. By the same token, I don't remember Jake getting beat too often. He exemplified what the Hogs were all about. Jake was blood and guts and he gets my vote.

My thoughts exactly. One of the best trades in franchise history. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
I couldn't have said it any better than Dmek25 , 53Fan and Mattyk72 , Thanks guys , your pal , Joe Jacoby :)

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
I don't remember Turk Edwards so i will speak for my generation.
1- Lachey and Jacoby tied for 1st with a slight edge to Jacoby being that he was FA and played his whole career for the Skins. The worst and I can't believe he's on the list is George Starke, he was the king of holding penalties. He got better when Grimm, May and Bostic showed up. |

I do remember as a kid hearing " holding number 74 " a few times, ... drive killer . He did however improve and become a guy I liked as a Skin during the 80's SUPER BOWL CHAMPION WASHINGTON REDSKINS !!! |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Over the years we have been very blessed at the Tackle position. If I pick one it's Jake.
1 - Joe Jacoby: Started in all 3 SBs. All-Decade 1980s. 4 Consecutive Pro Bowls, 2 1st Team All-Pros. One of he first 300+ pounders who was also athletic. Could maul in the run game and was excellent in pass-pro. 2 - Turk Edwards: Started in 2 NFL Championships for the Skins. All Decade 1930s, All NFL 1932-39. Member of HoF. 3 - Jim Lachey: Started in 1 SB. 3 Pro Bowls, 3 1st Team All-Pros as a Skin. Technique second to none. Probably better than Jacoby in pass-pro. As far as the DCPSR List so far, IMO should be: Green, Ken Houston, Olkewicz, Hanburger, Mann, Butz. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Tough call...went with Jacoby tho'.

Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Jacoby. I'm surprised Mark May has no votes, he's in my top 3 probably, behind Jacoby and Lachey. Tough to count Samuels out though. We've always been solid at this position.

Mark May played the majority of his career at RG, not Tackle. He did not have the quick enough feet to be a very good pass rush protector, so they protected him at guard. He did eventually play some OT. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
No way I can comment on Turk Edwards. His career ended before I was born.
Since a team needs two OTs, the two best on this list are Joe Jacoby and Jim Lachey - - in whichever order you might prefer. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Jim Lachey (1988-1995) This guy was a freakin studd
|
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
I'd go with Jacoby first but I have to say Samuels is a close second.
Samuels has basically played at a very high level, for years, on some losing teams with a revolving door of offensive lineman around him and not one Pro-Bowl caliber quarterback, though Campbell is close. I also think Jacoby played during an era when defensive lineman/ends and outside linebackers were greater. You had your Lawrence Taylors, Reggie Whites and many, many more. All of them didn't line up across from big Jake, but you get my point. Lachey, I'd say he's third on my list. |
Re: Redskins Best Ever series: OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Definitely Turk Edwards. I remember how he used to dominate DE's like they were schoolgirls. He went 8 seasons without giving up a sack. (I'm not 100% on that stat, but it sounds about right). He also had a clubhand and ate sardine sandwiches before every game so his breath would intimidate the D-Line. I remember how opposing defenses would give up on rushing him and would just send everyone to the other side of the line. He was a stud.
