Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
What do you think of this?
I thought we'd finally consider moving to a new punt returner. Especially with the amount of speed we now have on the team. REDSKINS NOTES: Defense dominates full-pads workout - Washington Times Despite a 6.5-yard average and a league-high 21 fair catches, Antwaan Randle El will remain the regular punt returner. "[Randle El] is going to be the guy, but you might see a little more by committee," special teams coach Danny Smith said. "Who that committee is going to be, let's see how the roster comes out. There are a lot of guys in the mix. My job in the preseason is to see if one of those guys can do it." Santana Moss returned six punts last year (including an 80-yard touchdown), and DeAngelo Hall has campaigned to be involved. A greater mix of Moss and Hall is a possibility. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I think we are seeing a change. Smith hints at waiting to "see how the roster comes out." I take that as meaning we'll see what happens with Alridge and Dorsey. Plus it mentions Hall and Moss being more involved.
We're only 3 days into camp, so basically all he's saying is ARE is the incumbent. Sounds to me like he's pretty open to that changing. That's a good thing. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
You figure if one of the 2nd yr WR step up that will mean ARL should be well rested. Hopefully his #'s will go up. I was hopeing they would find someone else to do it.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
If Devin wins the #2 receiver position so that ARE moves to the slot, ARE will not be on the field as much. This could help him to become a better punt returner.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
well at least he does'nt fumble the ball.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I'd be filled with rage if this happens. Our D is going to be too damn good to have it screwed up by a punt returner who gets no extra yards.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
i would rather have someone else better than ARE but not Moss or Hall either b/c i feel that will put them in situations to cause more injury and we really need them on the field
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I don't think this will stick, camp just started. We will see a change in our PR specialist (as ARE has not been very effective at that role).
ARE will find a good home as our #3 slot receiver. I look for Devin and Malcolm both to step up. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Devin should be our 2 WR and to be honest I think he could become the 1 through out the season!! So ARE should be fine at PR.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
There has to be at least 1 person on this team who can earn more YPC on punts than ARE. His good old days as a PR specialist are long gone.
I mean my great great old blind granny could do-se-do and then fall to the ground in a heap. And she's not getting paid millions to do it. |

Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
haha yea he sure does look graceful when he collapses immediately upon catching the punt 80% of the time
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Gonna be a long yr on special teams fellas.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
If we had the roster space, I think Hagans would make a good punt returner
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I am not going to sugarcoat this. This is absolute horsesh!t. If he has anything similar to the production from last year, whoever made this decision should be fired at the halfway point of the season.
There is no excuse to completely waste an opportunity that good teams capitalize on. When you score 16 points a game you need to take advantage of punt returns. This really pisses me off. Hall is begging to do it and they choose ARE?!?! WTF |

Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Moving ARE to the slot wont increase his punt return yards. He had all last season to prove himself. Its time for some fresh legs.

I know that owners shouldn't get involved in personnel decisions but this is one time that I beg Snyder to overrule the coaches. This is lunacy.... |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Yes Hagans the local product (Out of Hampton Roads) has really good potential as a PR or might work his way into the #5 WR spot.
Cool kid, was living in Hampton for the off-season. We work out at the same gym, really nice guy. Unless you struck up a conversation with him, you would have no idea he was a Redskin or football player for that matter, of course unless you followed him through High school, College, and into the Pro's. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Randle El's average returning punts for the Steelers: 9.35 with 4 TDs
With the Redskins, it's 7.13 with only 1 TD. The blocking has to be held in account too. What's Antonio Brown doing these days? |

Going by what I've read, Hagans is making a strong push for the fifth receiver position. Maybe he'll make the team. Zorn has singled him out for praise. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I heard Roydell got hurt today, don't know how serious but that helps Hagans
|

Thats why i didnt want him at the 5 spot. IMO The LAST thing we need is another WR coming off of a past injury. Id rather Marko or the local boy |

He hurt a finger. I haven't heard about the x-ray. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Randle El really hasn't shown me he is the man for punt returns. I'd like to see some young blood get in there. There is only one time that Hall needs to return punts or kick offs and that's when we play the ATL dirty birds. He's foaming at the mouth to do it, any other time no. Moss should get some more touches too. He knows, unlike ARE, how to take it to the house.

Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I don't care what the coaches are saying, if Dorsey or Albright do any good in preseason, they will be the new returner. My figurative money is on Albright, but the only way we have ARE as returner is if every other option fails out. And that would be a very bad thing.

Holy shit dude, if Ethan Albright can beat out ARE, then we've got issues.:) |

That would be a site to see, the red-snapper running over people on punt returns. |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Danny Smith is a motivated guy and I appreciate that, but sometimes he really chaps my ass when he is too stubborn to realize that changes should probably be made at least at the PR position.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Im not the Special Teams coached just a long time DIE HARD Redskins fan. I do not want Moss or Hall returning punts unless its in the playoffs and we need a big play. If ARE doesn't improve than we need to find a Punt returner and Kickoff Returner in camp. I hope to see some new faces back there this preseason like ( Aldridge,Dorsey,Hagans, Rock, and whoever else) We don't need to have a starter back there who could get hurt. ARE doesn't have the fire anymore to return punts, cause he makes to much to get hurt in his mind.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
you guys make me laugh. the same guys that cry for Moss or Hall to return punts are the same guys that will want Zorn fired if they get hurt back there. i think im in the minority , but i think A.R.E is OK back there. its the blocking. maybe time for a coaching ( Smith) change

LOL You are correct sir. Perhaps I meant Aldridge? maybe and/or could be |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
From what I understand Aldridge and Dorsey have really been struggling so far in camp, especially Dorsey
On another special teams note, Hunter Smith looks like a great pickup |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Sounds like the coaches are evaluating other guys but someone will need to step up in the preseason and take the job. Until then, ARE is the guy that is penciled in.
I do agree that if ARE moves to the slot and sees less snaps on offense he will be more fresh for returns so it's always possible that move could help. We'll see. |

It's possible Dorsey and Alridge were confused and it was just Alridge that had the fumble, not Dorsey |
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
Alridge has had a couple of nice runs where his speed was evident also.
|
Re: Randle El will still be our primary punt returner
I almost choked on my breakfast when I read this. My man A.R.E. must have some very compromising pictures of Danny Smith.:)
