Met Norv Turner the other day!
Apparently Norv Turner is a regular at the Starbucks I manage. I heard he frequents there, but haven't seen him until a couple days ago. I heard a voice say "I'll have a Venti Americano" and when I looked up, there he was with his Chargers shirt on...no doubt heading off to practice...it was around 5:15-5:30am. I looked at him and said, "this will be the only time I say this, and I apologize for bringing it up, but it's great to meet you Mr. Turner. I've followed your career for a long time, and as an avid Skins fan, I thank you for what you did for us". He chuckled and said "Skins fan huh"...with a slight shake of the head as if to say "I hate that team" haha. We then started talking about random things including my staff at Starbucks and how he enjoyed 1 of them in particular, and we started talking about customers and told him his wife Nancy (whom I met a few days before) was a great customer and we appreciate their business.
All in all, seems like a great guy. Two things struck me about him (other than the fact he was friendly) 1- he was taller than I expected, and 2- he has a VERY quiet demeanor. I expected him to have a louder presense. There are some other regulars I'm waiting on to come in, including Trevor Hoffman, but since Norv was an ex-skins coach, it was the highlight of my day. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Sorry, but I can't help thinking that if I ever met him, I would ask "How come you can't win close games?" before I could stop the question from coming out.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
i think the quiet demeanor has something to do with his lack of success as an N.F.L head coach. there are definitely times when you have to bring it. just listen to some of the older skins, and coach Joe would let loose when needed

I doubt that. Thats in public, not on the field. I remember him well in DC and still as a Charger HC, looking like his face was gonna explode from going nuts during a game. He just doesn't appear to be able to manage man that well as a HC. Kinda like Marty, just can't get over the hurdle. Norv has a great OC mind, just don't think he's suited well in the HC role. |

I really wanted to ask him what he thought of Snyder, but as the manager representing a huge corporation, I didn't think that was appropriate. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
I'm not sure that you would have gotten an honest answer.
Cool for you. I'd like to meet Norv. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
You should of treated him like a step father that abused you emotionally, and spit in his "Venti Americano".

LOL...Norv did nothing to us...he was merely a pawn in Snyder's fantasy football team. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Why does he hate the very team that he led for so many years? If he has a problem with the owner that's cool, but to say that he hates the team just brings so many doubts to his work ethic.

Jsarno didn't say that Norv said that, just that that was the look Norv had. I saw a sideline highlight of Norv during the playoff win over Detroit in '99. After a 3 and out, Norv went off on the O-line. Though it doesn't appear to happen very often, he lights it up from time to time. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
I have that date marked on my calendar and it better be a win for us. We have played him once as a coach of another team and that was when he was coach of the Raiders. We lost that game and are now 0-1. We need to even the score.

Norv could have done much better if the ownership question was not in doubt in the early to mid 90's. Jack Cooke should have left the team to John Cooke and maybe the ownership could have focused more on actually rebuilding the team. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Also, the Heath Schuler bomb itself pretty much messed up Norv's tenure from the get go. He got stuck with going with Frerotte as his starter, not much more you have to say. I liked Gus, but he wasn't ever going to be a HOF caliber type.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
he would frequent Starbucks...

John Cooke did not want the team in the passionate way that his father did., and if he had become the owner, he would not have cared two hoots. Jack Kent Cooke did us a favor. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
My store is a hot bed for athletes and celebs...in the past 2 days I have met Jeff Garcia, and met Kirsten Dunce. I didn't expect to meet either of those two.
Jeff was a top notch guy. Didn't seemed phased by his celebrity, he even told me his name was Jeff, then I looked at him (because I was wondering what Jeff Garcia was doing in my starbucks in the SD area) and he said "Garcia". I laughed and said "what are you doing here?" Which in hindsight sounded rude, but I knew he was in Oakland so I asked if they were playing SD and he said no, he was in town to see family. Had a short conversation with him, and you got the impression he was a great guy. Dunce on the other hand...well let's just say I don't have a high opinion of her now. I always thought she was pretty, but TV really does a lot for you. Keep in mind my store is right near the beach so she had no make up on. She was way too skinny too, and shorter than I thought. If Jessica Alba, or Jessica Beil comes in, I might lose my job from staring! haha. |

He seemed to do pretty well. Leadership is more about inspiring others than about being loud.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
I was working at a restaurant in Reston and he was in there right after he got fired. A few people bought him drinks and he seemed appreciative. I doubt he has any problems with Skins fans, but must have a huge chip on his shoulder in regards to Danny Snyder and rightfully so...I always felt so bad for the guy. The way Danny treated him was offensive...making him wait outside his office for hours after a loss. His post-game interviews were painful, knowing that he had to go face Danny Boy. Admittedly, it was tough to watch his teams. They put points on the board, but as someone posted earlier, he couldn't hold onto a lead. Looking back, the late game chokes were more of a Mike Nolan problem than a Norv problem. It's good to see Norv doing well in San Diego.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
My buddy's company just scored a big contract with starbucks. They provide some wrapping products for the sandwhiches. As for Norv does his face look more pitted in person or less pitted?

Man, Norv has had late game issues at every stop he's made. his record is putrid for that. If I had one person in Washington history that I couldn't stand at all it was Norv. DS should have fired him the minute he stepped in the building instead he let Casserly go. MAYBE HIS BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER. Snyder should have started with a new head coach, whoever, even Spurrier(not cuz he was good, but to get it out of his system) instead, Norv got a free ride here. Now he has taken a 14-2 SB team in SD and brought them to an 8-8, needing help to make the playoffs. HE IS TERRIBLE. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I hope he had a good time at Starbucks. |
Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Norv had another stroke of bad luck in the preseason game against Seattle. They had they game-winning play, but the receiver stretched out his hands too early, which slowed him down, and the ball sailed over his head.
