Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
So here we are, the all-important 3rd preseason game is upon us. Suppose you were Zorn this week and had to plan for the game, how would you answer these questions?
1. How long do the starters play? 2. Who's the first QB off the bench? 3. Who's the second QB off the bench? 4. How would you manage the kicker battle? |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. Into the 3rd quarter unless they have been putting up alot of points. More than 2 scores(tds) and they dont start the second half. I also don't tell them how long they are gonna play. Portis, Moss, Haynesworth and a few others play most/all of the first quarter but sparingly after that. I also would like to see them start resting Orakpo. He is playing alot of snaps so far and we dont want him wearing down later in the season. Rookies are not used to playing 20 games a year.
2. Daniels. Why not?? Time to find out what you've got here. If Z pulls the starters after 2, I would really like to see what he could do playing against the 2s. 3. Brennan. I don't play collins at all. You know what you have there. 4. Rayner plays the whole game. Give him a chance to kick multiple times. His kickoffs were good, lets see him kick a couple of long fgs. SS plays all of the next game. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. How long do the starters play? Until they score a touchdown, or halftime. Whichever comes first.
2. Who's the first QB off the bench? Collins... I know. It's a boring and safe answer, but continuing to allow Colt to disappoint his followers could be a detriment to Pineapple Jesus t-shirt sales. And Colt Brennan II might not look as good against second teamers that may actually see playing time this year. 3. Who's the second QB off the bench? Colt. Maybe when he throws another goal line interception, we can finally end the infatuation with this one hit wonder... but probably not. 4. How would you manage the kicker battle? If there's not a huge difference in production, keep Suisham. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. Starters play the first half, maybe into the 3rd depending on how they are looking. Ideally I'd love to see at least 10 points on the board by the half.
2. Daniel is the first off the bench. I think based on last week's performance he deserves another extended look. Let him play most of the third and let Colt play the 4th. Collins has the #2 locked up, let him sit. 3. See above 4. Just keep alternating kicks |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. at least the first half. if you like what you see, that will be enough. if they aren't performing up to your expectations, then longer.
2. Daniel. you already know what you have in Collins and Brennen 3. Brennen. in my opinion, the 2 young guys are fighting for jobs 4. it really depends on how much kicking actually goes on. but Zorn knows what Suisham is all about. so i might go exclusively with the new guy |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. Through the first half and one series each after the half. Get them to go through a half and come out after to practice that first drive.
2. Chase. As others have said, let's see what he can do against better competition. Collins sits for the night. Colt comes in if for the clean up in the 4th. 3. See above. 4. Raynor - we've seen Suisham all last year. Let's see what Raynor can do. |

Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
Play the starters for the first half.
Colt has played cleanup the past 2 weeks. I believe he comes in 2nd. like you said we know where TC is. I mean lets face it, Chase made good throws but look at the situation. Mitchell 6-4 covered by a 5-10 corner who will be pumping gas next week. who wins? Mitchell has been giving our starters fits in practice, the guy can play. Fred Davis our 2nd round TE who is pretty good when he holds onto the ball ran right past the man in coverage on the td. He was pumped after forcing the fumble and had a point to prove after last weeks game. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
It's preseason remember, if Colt had thrown that TD you'd be going crazy. Give Chase his due a TD is a TD i don't care who you score it on if the DF puts a 5-10 DB on a 6-4 WR who's to blame. OF Starters have to play the first half or at least 10 points whatever comes first. We sit TC unless there's a chance he might get cut we already know what we have with him. Colt for the 3rd qtr & chase 4th qtr. Rayner kicks 1st half & Suishan 2nd half.

1. How long do the starters play? I'd play the offense til they look a little smoother. Im not really concerned about the whole scoring deal the ball movement is my concern. Chase, I want to see what we have in him. There seems to be some good competion ahead for the 3rd spot I'd like to see T.Collins cut and some youth. But the only way that happens is great playing by Colt and Chase. 3. Who's the second QB off the bench?Colt, No Collins I want to see this to young guys show us who is better with equal playing time. 4. I just question the secondary, but it is still pre-season. Right. |

Collins needs to be 1st off the bench cause he may need to play this year. He also needs reps. I don't need to see Daniels or Brennan. Let them play the last game. 4. Kicker battle? I'm not worried about the kicking battle cause the offense can't seem to move the ball to get into FG range. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
1. I'd give the starters the full first half
2. Colt 3. Chase We already know what TC brings. He's either good enough to continue as the #2 or he really has no place on this team. So I'm not worried about playing him. I don't really see the need of giving Chase more time against better competition. I don't think right now the question with Chase is can he be the #2 QB. I think, at best, he's the #3 this year. And that's not a bad thing, the #3 guy is usually a guy you think can actually be a starter in 2-3 years. But let's not rush him into even being the #2 quite yet Colt, on the other hand, is a guy who was expected to challenge for the #2 spot. So let's see if he can. |

If he can beat out TC, doubtful but possible, I believe they really want him to, I doubt they would keep TC at #3 and Chase could make the team if Zorn likes what he sees in him. Futurewise, this is probably the best case scenario. I don't think anyone in the organization is ready to write Colt off just yet and Daniel needs to prove he can do it again. |

I don't know that TC really needs any more work though. Plus let's see some more of what Colt and Chase can do, because if Campbell isn't here next year it won't be because of Collins. But it might be because of Chase or Colt |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
Let them play until they can atleast score a TD and like someone else said have JC drop back to pass 90% of the plays and tell him not to worried about int's but getting the ball out to some who is past the line of scrimage.
I'd like to see Chase get some more time. 2nd off the bench is Colt because I feel he is now in a fight to stay on the team. You have to split the time between the kickers. |

I agree, CB had a nice drive until the pick. but it was 3rd down and he just watched Chase score 2 tds. after seeing that do you think he wanted to settle for 3 even though thats what he should have done and thrown it away? the play wasnt there and he tried to force it. It would be like if this week TC comes out with the starters first and leads the team to 2 scores and has a nice half. you think JC wouldnt come in with more of a sense of urgency? he would do anything he could to get a score---not saying scenerio that will happen --- These guys know it is a competition where the loser goes home, they will find themselves in a position where they know they may have to take a chance to outdo the other. |

Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
One thing I thought was pretty interesting was Zorn's reaction. Zorn is pretty candid about what he thinks, so you have to assume there are no motivational tools in play necessarily when he speaks of his players.
Zorn was pretty quick last summer to temper all the excitement about Colt, talking about his mechanics were ugly and he has to show better discipline. He seemed to have nothing but praise for Chase on Saturday, touting his poise, and mechanics |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
I'd also like to see a lot more of Jarmon, Wilson and Jackson. Sorry guys, I know I'm probably in the minority but I just don't think Wynn, Daniels and even Carter are any good. I want to see some of the younger guys get a look.

Really? I mean I think Wynn won't make this team, but Daniels brings a lot to the table as a run-stopping DE, though it wouldn't surprise me if the season ends with Jarmon starting over him, and I think Carter can have career highs in sacks (so I guess that's like 15?) with AH and Griffin in the middle. I think either Wilson or Jackson gets a roster spot, not sure both will. |

Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
Well, if I understood right Zorn said today that Collins will be the #2. That he expected Colt to battle for that spot but Collins isn't giving it up.
So it really does look like Colt is battling to stay on the team. Crazy. Would've never imagined this so soon. We should trade Colt (quick, someone work out a trade plan) for a RT. But anyway, I have this feeling that Zorn is kind of pissed at Colt. And maybe at himself in a way. Colt was supposed to be his guy, his pet project that he drafted and was going to develop. |

It's a match made in heaven. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
Just for the hell of it lets pass every single play this game and then next week lets run every single play.
|
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
play the starters into the 3rd.
colt-he needs to redeem himself. let him do it against better competition. chase-let him do clean up work. pick a kicker and let him play the entire game. last pre season game. starters-just a couple series collins-plenty of work chase-the rest of the game give the other kicker the entire game. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
Id like to see Jason play until he can lead the team to a TD, even if he has to play into the second half....

Carter was not double teamed at all last year and he still couldn't get to the QB. He doesn't have explosion or power coming off the edge. He only has one move and that's try and run around the tackle. Orakpo is about the same size as Carter and you can already see he is strong enough to bull rush a 300lb tackle and fast enough to run around him. Wynn and Daniels are just too slow and not athletic enough. I watched Daniels and he looks so slow out there. What the younger guys lose in experience and assignment responsibility they'll make up in some playmaking. I just think it's time to move on. It's a young man's game. |

Only Monty drew double teams on our interior line, so when he wasn't in, Carter was getting a left tackle and a running back when applicable.
Jason Taylor was the one who was rarely double teamed, and even so, most of our one on ones came in blitz situations, which sort of defeats the purpose of the one on one pass rushing match-up. I'd call Carter a "power" player because a majority of his moves are power moves, but the only really effective pass rushing move seems to be that speed rush. I'm not the biggest fan of speed rushers, but I think he does it pretty well. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
JC plays at least a whole quarter to shake the rust off and get himself into a rhythm hopefully.
Brennan and Daniel split the rest of the time to see if Daniel is the real deal and to settle the #3 QB spot or at least get a clearer picture about it. The kicker battle is almost a moot issue. Like Skins says, why care since you can't get the damn thing in the redzone anyway? |

He can't be as bad as he has been ater last year. Let him get some reps with a good line and some game planning and see what happens. At this point the biggest question that remains is him. 3. Daniel of course. Let him get a long look in the 2nd against the seconds. 4. Who knows... it depends on how much work they can get which depends on the offense being good enough but not too good. |

Vs the Steelers CB had a nice drive until the pick. CB has to learn to take what the defense gives and when in the redzone to take the 3 if the 6 isnt there. |

It almost feels as if Zorn is giving up on Colt, or he's at least very close to it.

That would be a mistake. Chase was nice, but like the more levelheaded guys in here have said it is one game either way. Game #3 will be very interesting about how Colt responds and how Chase responds being the one that is 'hot" right now. |
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
It's not like Zorn's opinion of Colt is based on one game though. He's been saying the same things going back to last year. Let's say this week Colt bombs again while Chase shines. I think there's a serious chance Chase wins the job. We'll see.
|
Re: Game Plan the 3rd Preseason Game
If Chase continues to meet challenges and look like the pro prospect that people believe Brennan can be, I don't know how we can cut Daniel. This is more about Chase than Colt. My eyes tell me that Colt is perfectly capable of hanging around on an NFL roster and he can make a nice living doing so, but Chase is like 3-4 years younger and already sees a field as well if not better.
So if Chase isn't a fluke, I think he gets it. If he struggles in one of the last two preseason games, then you probably try to sneak him onto the practice squad and try him again next year. |

I agree about Chase. He was a marquee college QB playing in the Big 12. He played great at very high level in the collegiate game. Sure Colt tore it up in the WAC, and his college career was impressive, but IMO he's no better of a prospect than Chase. May the best man win. Boy oh boy, the PJ5 stuff would sure look silly should Chase make the team.... Maybe Cooley will let Colt live in his basement and the Cult of Colt can camp out on his property. |
