American Indians look to high court
American Indians group takes 'Redskins' name to U.S. Supreme Court - ESPN
|
Re: American Indians look to high court
They have a large group of seven trying to take this to court. Sounds like strong support.
|
Re: American Indians look to high court
They won't win! Are they going to take the Cleveland Indians to the Supreme Court? The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office panel ruled in their favor of Redskin's in 1999. The 7 have been handed a series of defeats from judges who ruled that the plaintiffs waited too long to bring their suit .
If it was another city outside Washington D.C. maybe! |
Re: American Indians look to high court
This is statutory rather than constitutional issue and on that ground they have no chance in hell of winning. They would be lucky if the Supreme Court accepts the case.
|
Re: American Indians look to high court
I dont think the group will win this one but I do think its only a matter of time until the Redskins change their name & logo.

Will the Fighting Irish change theirs? Redskin's should keep logo ... What will be their new political correct name? The RedStorm. |

Its not the name they are going after its the trade mark which they want removed. |

Once trademark is removed . What is next? |

If it was another city outside Washington D.C. maybe!
Actually this is a different 7. Young people filed so that they can respond that they weren't born in time to file previously, as a way of getting around the "waiting too long" judgment. |
Re: American Indians look to high court
My understanding is that they want the Redskins trademark, which was issued in 1967, canceled.
|

Anyone can use the name Redskins and Logo (i.e. mattyk will be able to use the domain name redskinswarpath.com SmootSmack is free to make Redskins jerseys in his basement without consequence). |
Re: American Indians look to high court
Right, and it's not like the Washington Redskins won't be allowed really to continue as the Redskins. Just that their trademark will be diluted, as I understand it
|
Re: American Indians look to high court
Thing is they think they can prove the term "Redskin" is .....slander ....a racist saying.Do I agree no and will be the first to say that sometimes things are carried to far but with that said ...lets not forget the Court is now different to ethnic case's then it once was(get my point).
If I was was Dan I do it.....look at all the money people would spend in 2 different ways. 1) Buy up as much old Redskin memorabilia as possible! 2) People will buy the hell out of the new stuff! |

This is just what I was going to say put I did not know how to spell diluted. |

Why not just be known as Washington, keep the same colores, even keep the headress...just insert a big W? |
Re: American Indians look to high court
don't they always bring us to court and always lose...come on it isn't offensive.
|

Snyder already owns trademarks on Warriors I believe. Just in case. |

We're not the Giants...I'd like to think we're more creative than that. |
Re: American Indians look to high court
Give it up already. The team is named after an American Indian that was the coach of the team. Isn't there a limit to how many times you can take someone to court? I can't see the supreme court accepting this case either way.
If not, Snyder already has Washington Warrior merchandise ready to go. |

I have always felt they should feel honored. |

maybe if we were playing like the steelers or patriots |

HAHA good point..Maybe they should sue us depending on how we do this year, if we win 8 or less games then sue us, if we win 9 or more then don't sue us cause we're making American Indians popular haha |

Maybe our new logo will be the Washington Redskin Potatoes? |

Could we be the Washington Mashers, with the Redskin Potato as the logo? |

I doubt it since I dont know of any Irish people protesting the name and logo. I have no idea what the Skins new name & logo could be but I am willing to bet they have something in the files that would be ready to go. |

Some Indian was at one of the first games against the Cowboys and as we kicked their a$$ he yeld out go Redskins and it caught on and before you knew it everyone was saying Hail to the Reskins. The rest is history. |

Good stuff! |
Re: American Indians look to high court
Maybe we could take a page out of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and be the Washington Skins of Red of Virginia of Maryland
|

Where do people come up with this stuff. Hail to the Redskins was written by GP Marshall's wife as a fight song because GP Marshall wanted Onward Christian Soldiers as the Skins fight song. |

I'm pretty sure firstdown was just joking |
Re: American Indians look to high court
Washington Redskins – The Boston Braves entered the NFL in 1932. The following year, they would play their games at Fenway Park in Boston and take the Redskins name. It is rumored that this name change was partially meant as a tribute to their coach at the time, Lone Star Dietz, an American Indian.
NFL Team Nicknames - National Football League Team Nicknames Not quite as solid as I hoped, but this is what I've always heard. |

Is "Bullets" taken?
|
Re: American Indians look to high court
lonestardietz.com
has the court documents from previous court findings, and the history of the Indian coach honored with the name |
Re: American Indians look to high court
I assumed he changed it from Braves to Redskins because it sounds more like Red Sox.
The fact that this filing was timed to the opening of the football season suggests to me that this is less about righting an injustice than it is about garnering publicity to help fund raising. |

I mean it's not like there aren't tall people in other states? or are they trying to slander only the New Yorkers? Just Kidding. but you need to stop with the whole DS should think about his pocket and change his name. We don't need anyone else outside of the DC area putting ideas in his head. |

Probably the greatest victory of the PC crowd. Or worst, depending on how you look at it. I concur with irish that one day, hopefully not in my lifetime, the nickname will be changed. |

Must be nice to reply to my post on a closed thread. I suppose there was no space left on "Name and logo"for my response. |

I didn't even notice it was closed But anyway, I disagree that he's not coach friendly. But don't feel like continuously rehashing old news. So I will bow out of the discussion |
