Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I have never brought this up before on this site, but I have noticed this last year, this preason, and especially vs. the giants.
Landry's lack of maturity and aggressiveness is really hurting us. It was nice at first when he got the occasional late hit, to send a message. Now it seems he is always coming in late, leading with his head, etc. That may not be a big deal to you all, but he misses A LOT of tackles because of this. He goes for the knockout, rather than the sure tackle/pick. Also he gets too many penalties. I also feel Landry's coverage has gone done because of this. I know ST did the same, but I feel he def developed more disciple before he was tragically taken away from us all. The part that bothers me the most is how Landry talks smack after EVERY play. Even if they get a first, and he makes a crappy tackle Landry feels the need to get in their face all the time. It reminds of Smoot, who just celebrates and talks smack even when he gets burned. It is just bad to do IMO, especially if you are messing up and you have no right to talk smack. Don't get me wrong, I still think Landry is a really good player. I do feel however he hasn't really matured in a way that can help us more than he did a couple years ago(you except steady improvement each year from a first rounder) . Those steps need to take place for him to move into the elite category, which he is more than capable of doing. It is frustrating knowing he should be one of our strong points on D, yet he still hurts the D quite a bit. Thoughts? |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Dude seems like he is pretty much regressing and is just flat out angry at the world.
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
And to think we drafted LaRon Landry when we could have gotten Adrian Peterson. Oh well...hindsight is always 20-20.
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Yeah gotta agree on that one. I don't want to say he plays with too much passion but he needs to play smarter football, not harder football (bad analogy but w/e). He's always looking for the big hit or being dominant instead of going for the sure tackle, and he gets too many dumb penalties (I'd hate to count how many personal fouls he's gotten in 3 years, I'm sure its up there). I'd rather see him play smart football because I know he's capable of being an elite safety, but all the elite safeties play smart football and don't always play like everybody wronged them. He should've moved on from getting trucked by Brandon Jacobs as soon as that play was over, instead he dwelled on it and made it a point of emphasis to get back at him this game and that's why he got that dumb penalty. He's another one of those guys that needs to show more maturity and start progressing because I feel like he hasn't progressed much, if at all, since his rookie year.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
It would be nice to see Laron play closer to the line of scrimmage. He always comes running in like a missle to make a huge tackle but usually wiffs. How can he be a great playmaker lining up so far in the backfield that he isn't even on my tv?
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Ruhskins mentioned that his lack of maturity and discipline is hurting us and I totally agree. Let's hope he cleans his act and doesn't turn into a D. Hall (supposedly he is cleaning his act, we'll see) We don't need "me" players with their own agendas, this is a team.

Hard to disagree w/ this statement. I don't see the "aggressiveness" others see in Landry either or to be more specific I don't see it when there's actually a play to be made. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Sorry for more negativity.
I don't think Landry is bad, or the sky is falling. I just wish he controlled his emotions, gained maturity and used his skills to help us more. I mean, his closing speed is sick. |

I certainly hope that is not the case, because that would be really bad news.... |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I'm not taking up for Landry, he has some growing up to do, but has anyone seen how many times they show that play where he gets trucked by Jacobs? One day last week I watched a show where they showed it 6 times in a row. Over and over. And this is on a local "Redskins" station! I bet they don't show Fletch knocking Jacobs ass-backwards over and over. Some of the coverage by these shows who use the, "We cover the Redskins!" to gain viewers makes me sick. The way Blache plays him, Landry acts like when he does get a chance to make contact he wants it to be a kill shot but he ends up missing more than he makes.
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Landry does need to grow up. It is not just the penalty thing or the missed tackle thing, either. He has the talent to be a force in the middle of the field. But he doesn't work hard, thus squandering his talent somewhat, leaving the middle of the field a weak part of our pass defense. He has yet to play like a #6 pick because he hasn't grown up enough to work hard.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
this is a make or break year for him imo. 3rd year pro now, he needs to start showing true playmaking abilities. horton has been far better than him thus far in their careers.

U could argue with that, I guess.. Although it's still little bit early to decide that Horton will have good year this year.. He did look good last sunday, though.. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Oh please, he's a football player. Get off of his nuts.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I've been bitching about his attitude and lack of discipline since he got here, and have been jumped all over because I am a big ST fan. They aren't the same. ST played football like a madman. He knocked out when appropriate and he arm tackled when he had to, and he played coverage like a hawk. Landry is too much a loose cannon. Between that and Moss getting into it I'm wondering if the leadership from the coaching staff may be lacking in the behavioral basics dept.

Bingo.. ST would have had him under control.. It looked like Laron idolized Sean, he cried when Sean died.. That says something.. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Zorn said in the presser that he was cool with the late hit even though it cost 15 yards. Said LaRon didn't know he was out of bounds and continued to play football. LaRon is a baller.
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
If you watched the Steelers vs Titans game , Troy Polamalu did the same thing when Chris Johnson had a 34 yard run and he hit him late out of bounds. Laron is not Troy P. but he is very agressive. He needs to become a better tackler and leader.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I was thinking, when he missed on the knockout shot on Boss, that he's looking a lot like the year Sean Taylor had that was a "down year." Sean had a year (I'm thinking the one before he was killed (not the one during which he was killed)) where he took a bunch of bad angles, only went for kill shots and never really tried to get any picks. That reminds a whole lot of Laron right now and I'm a little concerned. I just hope that a coach can get through to him that if he played more under control, he'd be an absolute monster.
I also think he'll always suffer because it's tough to lose a Sean Taylor and then have a perfectly good player replace him. He's not Sean Taylor and he probably never will be. That's difficult to accept. He can be very good, but Sean was well on his way to becoming one of the greatest safeties of all time. The year he was murdered, he was definitely coming into his own and it seemed like he was making every play. We all know what happened after that. Landry steps in and he's perfectly capable, if a bit undisciplined, but he's not Sean and he's going to have a tough time erasing/living up to that. He may never live up to it. None of this is to suggest that Landry can't play the game, I really like the guy, I just hope that he can start to play a little more under control. Also, let's keep in mind, that Laron was supposed to be the blitzing, down in the box SS, not the 25 yards away from the line FS, so that takes an adjustment as well. Laron can't really play to his instincts because he's always been down in the box with a FS to cover for him if he misses the big shot, he wasn't the last line of defense, now he is, he'd do well to remember that. |
And to think we drafted LaRon Landry when we could have gotten Adrian Peterson. Oh well...hindsight is always 20-20.
Missing on AP grinds my gears most about Landry. Sean Taylor, he is not, and will never be. Landry was supposed to be a Polamalu type at SS, but to be honest, I don't see that happening anytime soon either. There's a fine line between playing aggressively and playing out of control, and I feel that Landry crosses that line far too often still.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I think Landry will be a great player. He just needs to spend more time on film and study up on coverages. He's a free safety. His job this year and last is more about coverage and interceptions rather than getting the big hit.
As much as Jacobs running over him hurt his image and his pride, hopefully he can put it behind him and just learn that lesson. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Someone needs to pull that stud out of his lip and shove it up his ass.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
You know what grinds my gears? The Redskins waterboys. They've gotta be the worst in the league. I can't count how many times I saw thirsty Redskins and the waterboys just dragging their asses. C'mon hustle, get that water dished out! ;)

You notice that too? Some of those punks didn't even have towels ready for players as they came off the field. |

See, that right there is totally the fault of Vinny and Lil' Danny with a little help from Zorn. Did you know that we traded three young waterboys that we had been developing to New England for Brady's personal towel washer? Then, Zorn has the guy sitting in the locker organizing towels rather than keeping Jason's hand's dry. You know what happened - Jason's hands weren't "Brady soft & dry", Osi strips the ball, game over. Epic, epic fail. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Anyone here notice that one INT was due to Landry's hustle?
Anyone here think Landry makes WR's hesitant to come through the middle? I'll take the somethines bad with the very, very good. Landry is a great Safety, one lax game won't change that. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Landry is a very good player. A lot of what he does fails to show up on the stat sheet; he's asked to play deep center field and he generally prevents teams from going deep on us.
However, I agree he's not producing like a top 10 pick and needs to play with more discipline and maturity. He shouldn't go for the kill shots unless he knows he's going to take down his man; he missed tackles far too often. He also needs to stop talking trash right in players' faces after a tackle, or we're going to get burned one of these days. |

yeah thats my view on landry too. last year it seemed like we pretty much played 1 safety, and that was landry, 40 yds from the line of scrimmage, asked to just sit back there and go sideline to sideline if a deep ball is thrown. id like to see him closer to the LOS but then who do we have on the roster that we can trust to do what he does which is basically patrol the deep end of the pool by himself. . . . landry has crazy closing speed. go skins!! |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Nownownow, that's some high quality...H20.
I think the excuse about learning has become invalid, as Landry played all of 2008 as Free Safety and spent his 3 years at LSU as a free safety. The mistakes should be becoming less and less, and overall he had been a solid player for the Redskins. Meanwhile, you have a game he's been thinking about for almost a full year, trying to exact revenge. Adrenaline got the best of him. If it further becomes an issue, Blache should address it. However, a week at practice and in the film room will show him the mistakes he made and he should make the necessary adjustments. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I like Landry's intensity. I don't want him to lose his aggressiveness but I would like him to play smarter, especially with the late hits.

I saw one miss the guys mouth and squirted water right in the players face. Not sure if was because we were loosing or he was just a bad shot. |

Probably lack of focus. That and they get paid crazy money, I heard they make $8/hr. The money goes to their heads. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
Fair or not, I'm just never going to forgive Landry for getting steamrolled by Jacobs. That has to be one of the nastiest hits of the decade, and the clip is going to be shown for the next twenty years (at least) whenever these two teams play. It's hard enough living in Giants country and having to watch the Skins lose nearly every time they play (6 of the last 7), but getting embarrased in the process is just too much.
|
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I'll give him a few more games before I throw him under the bus. His play to cause the INT was sick. I wonder if he went up to London after he absolutely plastered Jacobs and said "thanks dude".

Just rebut it with Fletcher's hit on Jacobs Sunday, along with his stat line. |
Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
right now, like as of last game, I would have liked either Adrian Peterson, or Michael Griffin over LaRon Landry. When we got LaRon I was like thats great we're getting the next Ronnie Lott, He's definitley shown flashes of potential greatness, but the other two I named above have played a lot better and are already pro bowlers, which I thought LaRon would have been right now. If LaRon wants to be a pro bowler he shouldn't always play so deep, and move around more like Polamalu, and he shouldn't go for the kill or fiestyness that he did last game, cause he just leads to 15 yard penalties stupid hit after stupid hit. He's got 15 games to straighten up and start playing like a man and not a killer..especially if he wants to go to the pro bowl this year.

Re: Laron Landry Grinds My Gears
I thought I was gonna get a lotta crap for this thread. Guess I am not the only one with a bit of concern.
Also for those who said it was a one game thing, I think it has been an issue in the past annd now it is getting worst/no improvement. I am not losing sleep lol, but I just hope the coaches see this too and help correct the issues. He has crazy potential. Like I mentioned before, his closing speed is just crazy. |

If this team wants to win games, they have to stop making these easily avoided penalties. |

Landry was not a SS "until he got to Washington" like i read every friggin time someone starts a thread about him. He is used to playing the "center field" role...his troubles have absolutely nothing to do w/ him being suited for a different position blahblahblah. :) Thank you Mr. BDBohnzie for the clarification. |
