Quick Hitters: Booing in Week 2
TE Chris Cooley and some other Redskins [1-1] have voiced their irritation over the boos that came raining down on the team -- specifically, the soporific offense -- during and immediately after yesterday's 9-7 win over the hapless St. Louis Rams [0-2]. I'm not a booer myself [I don't recall ever booing the Redskins or any specific Redskins player], but I don't have a problem with booing, particularly in this circumstance. It may be tough for millionaire athletes like Cooley to understand, but mostly middle class fans paying enormous ticket prices and parking fees that ought to inspire a Congressional investigation do eventually become exhausted and annoyed with an offense that, year after year is not only bad, but extremely boring. The Rams lost by 28 points last week to a Seahawks team that won't be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl, but the Redskins barely hung on to win that game. Last night, ESPN's Chris Berman opined that the Rams and Redskins game set the NFL back 30 years. I think he was being overly generous.
Read it all.

Im a big Cooley fan but he is dead wrong here. The fans absolutely have a right to voice displeasure and frankly Im glad to here it. First I dont think he understands most of the booing is being directed at Zorn and his weak ass excuses since the end of last year and his bullsh*t playcalling. Cooley get over it and do something about it...how about a little leadership in clubhouse? Look at the bottom line, the offense hasnt scored a touchdown this season (end of game against the Giants doesnt count, garbage time) and that is unacceptable with the talent we possess. Simply saying we are "working on it" gets old. Cooley you dont like the "voice of fan?" YOU AND THE OFFENSE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. The part in the article about Reinhart is a legitimate question, im worried but would love to see him step up.

good stuff. the coaches and the players have to realize that this isn't jacksonville. the media and fan pressure is intense around here so too bad if you get your feelings hurt. sonny confronting zorn on a horrible call is so freakin awesome. zorn made a bad call but it seems like he can never take accountability for it like gibbs did. you'll never hear him say "it's on me, this is my fault." the fans booing at the end of the game is very understandable. if cooley, henson or anybody else doesn't like it then do something about it.

I think that article pretty much sums up how I feel right now.

If you can't score more than 3 FG's against a pathetic team, you're gonna get booed. This goes back to last year too, fans are getting tired of these nail biters.

Will Montgomery isn't actually an undrafted rookie. 7th round pick, has started about 8 games (I think) in the past three seasons

Montgomery is in there over Rinehart simply because he plays center and guard.

I'm not sure it is fair to say, as the article indicates, that Cooley's lack of understanding for the boos is connected to his "millionaire" status versus the predominantly "middle class" status of the fans. In fact, I think that idea is silly. I do, however, agree that the boos the team heard were well deserved and that not a single player ought to be complaining about them. I also like the analysis of the problems with the Redskins' passing offense.

We're heading toward a 20 year mark of being a predominantly bad/mediocre team each and every year with the exception of about three playoff years. I think fans have finally gotten tired of having their team meet low expectations year after year. I've defended Snyder ever since he hired Joe Gibbs back, but I am so tired of the Redskins under performing.

I think, though, that was the first time I have ever heard the Redskins being booed by their own fans after a home victory!

I have no problem with fans booing the home team. I have booed several times and I was even cursing Gibbs on the way out after they blew it against Philly in Taylor's last game. However, the crowd as a whole was a joke yesterday. If you care enough to boo, you damn well better cheer them when they need it. The crowd was embarassing minus the last 4 and out. The Washington fans were a joke and for them to be non-existent for all but one series and then boo after a win? The players have a gripe in this instance.

I was embarassed to be a Redskins fan yesterday (as opposed to being a fan of the Redskins).

Yeah I'm not buying that either, kind of a cheap shot.

A W is a W but we need to start clicking or we're not getting 6 wins this year.

I tend to think Montgomery was active over Rhinehart because of flexibility. The question will be, do they battle it out to see who starts, does it get handed to Rhinehart, or did Montgomery play well enough to get a look. Either way, if Montgomery plays and Rhinehart stays inactive, then you would have a definitive answer on whether Rhinehart was a wasted pick.

I'm a diehard fan and pay an absurd amount of money to have season tickets so I can cheer the Skins on in person. If the players and coaches don't understand why we are booing, they are so far removed from the reality of football that I don't think they'll ever be able to be a competitive team in the NFL. All of us are tired of mediocrity (or worse) year after year.

I understand that its a long season and they need to work out their redzone issues. I agree that fans should voice their displeasure. Its great that fans know we have talent and have some knowledge of playcalling. With that said, I prefer Zorn ball over Spurrier ball. Also, his playcalling is more aggressive than Gibbs 2.0. We are going in the right direction.

I'm thinking they're going to battle it out from what I gathered from Zorns PC. But I would think Rinehart is expected to win that spot. Montgomery did play pretty well but Rinehart may have too if he was active and given the chance. We'll see, it may be a gametime decision according to Zorn.

Re: Quick Hitters: Booing in Week 2

Someone from Wilbon's weekly WaPo chat nailed this issue perfectly:

I was at the game. I would like to comment on the boos.

The first three instances were absolutely reasonable. You don't throw HB Options from the 8 after running 4 times in the last 5 plays inside the 10. You don't drop passes.

However, the booing during the kneel down was crazy. But, I think there was more to it. It was, we just paid big bucks to get in, have zero parking options below $40, can't tailgate like before, and now, we are leaving without a touchdown. It was a visceral reaction, even though not logical. I tried to tell people kneeling to win the game was obviously correct, but they just seemed to want to boo to get it out of their system.

Leaving the stadium, it was so quiet you would have thought we just left a memorial. It has been 3 times louder after LOSSES.

People were just stunned. In the end, Snyder no longer has a safety net. You can't treat fans like dirt, and the not put out a quality product.
