Portis is good
From Peter King's column today:
quote: Sweet music to Washington fans' ears: Clinton Portis, is his three seasons (one at the University of Miami and two with Denver) as a full-time starting running back in college or pro football, has averaged, per season, 5.5, 5.5 and 5.5 yards per carry. He also rags on TO and argues that the Raven's deal must stand. Right on! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/peter_king/03/05/mmqb/ |
Holy Crap! That is 16.5 yards per carry cumultively - that is Hall Of Fame material. I can't wait to see him suit up! |
Look forward to hearing Hail to the Redskins alot next year with him. We can only hope.

OMG....King said something good concerning the Redskins?!?!?
:p |
OMG....King said something good concerning the Redskins?!?!?
:p
i bet it made his hemmoroids act up big time saying something good about the redskins.the only reason he said something bad about TO is because his lips are permantley attached to the asses of the forty niner big wigs, walsh and terry donahue.i still hate the guy,he's should take a laxative and hope it blows his brains out. |
I can't wait for Portis to break of his frist 60+ yrd run. So long Bailey!
|
I too am excited at the prospect of Portis, but does anybody have a number as far as average carries per game on this guy? I suspect Gibbs will be banging him 20-25 carries a game, is he durable?
|
Portis had 290 carries in 13 games last year, a little over 22 per game. Plus he averaged 3 catches a game

With 29 games played, Portis has 563 carries for 3099 yards, which comes out to an average of 19.4 carries per game, for an average of 5.5 yards per carry. Keep in mind, however, that of those 29 games, Portis has started only 25 of them. The games he did not start were in the first four games of his rookie year, where he carried the ball 5, 4, 18 and 8 times, respectively. Toss out those games, and his average goes up to a slightly more rugged 21.1 carries per game. Doesn't sound like much, you say? Well, surprisingly, despite the reputation of Gibbs runningbacks as 25-plus carries per game types, Portis' career average is actually significantly higher than those of most of Gibbs' primary ballcarriers.

Earnest Byner averaged only 17.35 carries per game in his three years as the primary ballcarrier ('90-'92).
Gerald Riggs averaged only 16.75 carries per game in his approximately 12 games ('89) as the primary back.
George Rogers averaged only 17.8 carries per game in his two 1,000 yard seasons ('85 and '86).
Only the venerable old "Diesel", John Riggins, averaged more than 20 carries per game as the primary back (excluding the '81 season, where he and Joe Washington essentially split carries), averaging 23.75 carries per game.
One interesting thing to note about Portis' astounding rushing averages is that his average yards per carry actually goes up substantially when his team is ahead, to a devastating 6.0 yards per carry. That number was probably a big factor in Gibbs & Co's love affair with the young star. |
Great info JoeCrisp. Thanks.

I knew I could rely on you guys to put my mind at ease, thanks for the great feedback

Actually though it does bring me to another question, any of you guys have any good sites to research player stats and things of that nature?

Here are three of my favorites:

Active NFL player stats: http://www.nfl.com/players
Historical NFL stats: http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/teams.nsf
Redskins database: http://www.extremeskins.com/index.php
The second site is one of the most comprehensive collections of NFL historical stats I've found on any free site. It has season-by-season stats for every NFL team, and even has stats for now-defunct historical teams. They've even been adding box scores of NFL games to the site, and have compiled them all the way back to the '94 season. Hopefully, they'll continue to add to it. It's damn good for a free site. |
This is a decent site

awesome job finding all of that info. do you know if its possible to see what situations the team was in when he has had his fumbles the past 2 years? I only ask cuz I'd hate to see another Stephen Davis situation where he fumbles within 5 yards of the goalline(like he did in that last drive against us this year) or near the end of a game trying to wear the clock out (like in the cowboy game a couple years ago which was one of the worst game to watch in my life.)
|
I thought for a long time that Davis fumbled a lot, but actually he has a very low carry-fumble ratio.....one of the lowest in the league. Surprising huh? I guess it's just because he gets so many touches.
|
I think the more agonizing aspect of Davis' fumbles was the timing of his fumbles. Diving over the goal line against Arizona, while running out the clock against the Cowboys, among other heartbreakers
|
Another great post, Crisp.
And it's not impossible that Betts will have a nice year spelling Portis. Plus we have Rock and Morton, so we can take the heat off Portis at times. And he's oh so young. Also, having break-away big-play speed keeps defenses worried. On any given play, Portis can take it to the house. I'd love to see us run some screens and dumpoffs for him in the passing game as well. Get him in the open field! With Gibbs, Bugel and Zampesi crafting the plays, this should be a fun year, once everything gets clicking. |
Clinton Portis: by far the best RB in the NFC East, maybe even the entire NFC (apologies to Ahman Green).
|
I think portis is definitely the best in the NFC east but I'm not so sure yet about the entire NFC. I mean Ahman Green has been a monster for atleast 3 or 4 years hasn't he and until Portis catches the ball as much as him with the same productivity I don't know if I can put Portis up there, but I can't wait to see what he does in a skins uniform next year especially against the division.
p.s.(duece mccallister ain't too bad of a running back either) |
200 Yds & 3 TDs against Dallas will make him the best RB in the NFC in my book. Stephen who...?

The fact we are Skins fans and we diagnose every single play, every bad play sticks out like a sore thumb and gets seared into everyone's memories. There are plenty of backs that fumble a lot more than Davis, and it did seem that Davis would cough it up at the worst time (but is there ever a good time for a fumble?). |
i look for CP to have a long career as a redskin, but it scares the shit out of me that we are 1 hit away from disaster at the rb position.i would feel better if we had a more experienced backup than betts or cartright.

I am happy with Rock and Betts backing up right now....you can't have a pro bowler backing up each position. If Portis needs a game off, I would have no problem handing the rock to The Rock
|
what if portis got injured in the first quarter of a game the skins needed to win to get in the playoffs?i would feel a whole lot better if antwoian smith or even terry allen were signed as a backup.i know they can play in the clutch.
|
If there wasn't a salary cap, I'd agree with you, but don't you think we need more help elsewhere than back up RB
|
I think Rock Cartwright could take over in the clutch too. Especially since the line will be much improved this year due to coaching. |
i'll put it this way,i would feel better giving it to rock or morton than i would to betts or canidate.i wish we had a more vet type of back though as a back up.

Betts is alright. He hasn't had much of a chance to show what he can do. He's been hurt most of the time, which doesn't reflect on his abilities.
|
well,to be honest he has'nt shown me $hit.i liked him even less when i heard of his work ethic.i forgot we have sultan too,he's gonna be CP's #1 backup eventually i think.
|
Betts is alright. He hasn't had much of a chance to show what he can do. He's been hurt most of the time, which doesn't reflect on his abilities.
In my opinion all of Betts' injuries do reflect on him and his abilities...badly. If he has another injury filled year, he needs to go. Give him one more chance, but you can't take up a roster spot and salary on a player that plays four games a year. |
i say trade him away for draft picks, which is what gibbs will do if his work ethic does not improve.we need rock, morton, and sultan.canidate and betts we could do without.
