Betts!?!?
I was at the game and only saw it once, but it sure looked like Betts did a horrible job blocking Reed and is to blame for that defensive TD? Portis blocks much better. How bad was that block?
|
what block? i didn't see a block... i saw him stand around while reed destroyyed brunell though, and then sit there why reed got the fumble, and then watch in awe as he took it into the end zone :(
|
I just saw the replay on Sportcenter!
Betts missed the block then missed the tackle. Um. What good is the guy? Holdover from previous coaching staffs... He'll be gone, not too worry. Terrible football by #46! |
Betts should be inactive next game. seriously. in his sweats. or better yet, watching the game from home. like he did on that play.
|
As I said in another thread, Betts' effort on the play that gave up the touchdown was horrid. There is no excusing his lack of effort on the "attempted" block or the lack of effort to go for the ball or the player who recovered the fumble. If teams were allowed to fine players for horrible plays during a game, this would merit the largest allowable fine...
But if you sit him down for the next game, you will probably see Rock Cartwright as the #2 running back. And let's not forget Rock's abjectly awful displays of blocking all last season. Remember his lunging at a blitzing safety and missing him completely leading to Patrick Ramsey winding up in a heap? It happened a couple of times... Or maybe someone here thinks that Sultan is an outstanding blocker in the backfield in addition to having Hall of Fame level skills as a running back??? What you need to hope for is that the coaching staff will jam a hot poker up Betts' butt just before he hits the field next week and that he will retain that motivation for 60 minutes of football. He has physical tools to be a decent RB; he just hasn't found it worthwhile to utilize all of those skills on every play yet... |
or keep your #1, Portis in. he's been more than holding his own at pass protection. he's fearless and always throws his 200lb body at somebody, only this time with no ball to fumble.
|
Betts looked awful on that play I agree, and it was a HUGE play that swung the game to the Ravens in my opinion. But should we cut the guy like some suggest? Let's try to keep a sense of realism in all of this.
That's not how you build a team, one mistake and you're done. If that was the case we wouldn't have anybody playing for us right now. |
Betts was so pathetic on that play. I lost all respect for him as a football player last night. I probably would not cut him becasue it will only bring other less talented players to the forfront. However, cutting him is not an outlandish suggestion. This is the NFL and many players have been cut for a lot less. That lame lack of effort play is the single biggest factor in the Skins losing that game. No one would deny that. And Gibbs also said in postgame that that play had the potential to be a huge play for the offense if it was blocked properly.
|
So we cut him and now Rock is the backup, and as SC pointed out is an even worse blocker??
Oh that's right we have Bo Jackson Jr. on the practice squad, Sultan McCullough. Not sure why we haven't activated him yet, he's the answer to all our problems. LOL |
This is why I just said I probably wouldn't cut him. My only point was that players wave been cut for less in the NFL so thinking it is not stupid. I would not cut him though becasue he is more talented than the players behind him. I really don't understand why Betts plays on 3rd down to begin with since Portis is a better blocker and pass receiver.
Maybe they are trying to rest him so he is not playing every down of the game, I don't know. or maybe they disagree and don't think Portis is a good blocker, who knows. |
I would love to be in the meeting when the offense looks at the tape and the run that play in slow motion. Betts is going to get some serious s**t and will probably take a few extra hits in practice.
|
I say bring Portis in on passing downs and Betts in on running downs. Portis isn't running the ball in our system well and gets nothing play after play. He can block and catch though. Betts isn't blocking well but runs the ball with power and would be a better back to move the chains for us.
Yes, I said it, let Betts run and Portis block and catch. Let the flaming begin... |
I'm not cutting Betts any slack but its really not all of his fault. Brunell needs to check the defense at the line. They ran that play 2 times and not once did he look over the D. Just looked over the line at Ray Ray. Ed Reed came in at full speed both times. Kind of hard to pick someone up that quick and that strong.

Yeah, God forbid you be in the NFL and not pick up someone quick and strong! |
If your in the NFL you should be able to do your job, thats why you get paid all that money. I dont care if Ray Lewis had a 20 rush right at you, you're expected to stop him, no excuses. If you cant do your job, get the hell out. Its not high school, your in the NFL.
|
On a CB or safety blitz, it is not that uncommon for them to come in unblocked, or barely touched. That's no excuse for Betts, but I do remember seeing our DB's blitzing and either taking a bad angle or just whiffing on the tackle on more than one occasion last night. Unfortunately, Reed just did it the way it is supposed to be done.
|
what about maybe running for the fumble, or god forbid stop Reed from scoring after let all that happen???
Gibbs should bench him one game out of prinicple. not even let him be on the sideline. |
That could be the worst attempt by a professional player I have ever seen. You are being paid to be a NFL player, you have to forth more effort than that. Betts completely blew all aspects of that play. All he had to do was chip him, go down low on him, anything to buy one second, and he did nothing. I have seen kickers make better attempts at plays than that. Then, he makes another half-ass attempt at tackling Reed. Except, Reed was gone from the spot that Betts was running too. Aweful. Due to injuries, I had Betts on my fantasy team. I prayed he did not come back in last night, even though it meant I could get no points out of him. Brunell should rip him a new one for that.
|
why in the hell is he(betts) the 3rd down back anyways? you and i both know we're not going to run it on 3rd and long! so, why not get morton in there? someone who can catch the ball coming out of the backfield that's fast enough and can make the moves necessary to get to the sticks! why can't we just do a draw with CP up the middle, why the slow developing plays to where he never gets his motor going and thus we abandon the run game and go with mr. "i was good a decade ago" brunell....?!
|
Betts didn't even get in Reeds way. He almost moved aside for him. Awful awful awful! Also if he couldn't block why not just tackle him and take the 10 yard penalty? He was an absolute train wreck on that play. And on replays it didn't look to be a 100% effort. It is impossible to do a worse job in that situation than he did.

But I have to say that was one of the worst performances I have EVER seen by a pro. He stood and WATCHED as Reed went after his QB!!!!!!!! HORRIBLE!!! At a MINIMUM, he should have clipped the guy and taken the penalty. Once Reed ran around him, he just became a spectator. I was completely shocked. |
every time reed started within 5 yards of the line, you knew he was blitzing... brunell should have been more aware, but betts really really needed to slow him down in anyy way possible... and side stepping isn't going to get it done.
