Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

We have put the whole article here.
Here is Smoot lays the Smackdown. In its second week as a original content article, SmootSmack, Moderator at theWarpath.net, provides post game analysis.

A quarter into the season and we're a .500 ball club. Judging by most of the discussion this past week you'd think we were seeking our first win in the last 19 games. Should we be calling for playoff tickets? No. Should we be thrilled with our two victories? Probably not. We've had to scratch and claw our way to these two wins, but such is life in the NFL. The difference between the best teams and the worst teams is really often just the matter of a play here or there. I'd love for us to blow out the Bucs, Rams, Chiefs and Panthers of the league. And it's disappointing that we have not been able to have a comfortable win in who knows how long. But until then I'll gladly take a W.

But with the win still comes the smack. So it's time to lay the smack down

Jason Campbell
Overall thought he played a pretty strong game. Yes, he threw 3 INTs. But he also had two big TD passes and made some key plays with his feet. Still, I loved the fact that for the first time all season it was put on his shoulders to make plays. You can't make mistakes if you're not trying to make plays. So, for now at least, I'll take the interceptions. What I won't take and what gets him smacked is yet another fumble. That's too many fumbles Jason. Protect the ball when you're getting tackled.

Malcom Kelly
Just not feeling Kelly on any sideline patterns. It's not like Campbell's throw was pretty (not a good throw at all in fact), but Kelly's effort was absolutely ugly on that INT. His timing was just sloppy. And if he can't get the separation he's going to have to fight the defender on those types of passes. But it also seems as those that's just not a pattern, a relatively simple pattern, that Kelly runs all that well. It's like those basketball players who are better suited with their back to the basket. Kelly's better suited it seems to receive passes with his back to the basket (or endzone). Send him over the middle in traffic. That's where he would do best. And yes I realize the first INT was on an over the middle pass. Didn't look as ugly as the second INT though.

Carlos Rogers
Catch the damn ball! He got abused by Bryant Johnson last week and fooled by Antonio Bryant this week, but maybe that could be forgiven if you made an interception every now and then. Hate on Hall all you want, but at least he'll do what good cornerbacks do...and that's make an interception

Todd Yoder
I think he knows why

Hunter Smith's Groin
Not since Clinton in '98 has there been such concern about a man's nether regions in the nation's capital. I'm not actually going to lay the smack down on his groin (I'll leave that up to DynamiteRave), but please please please get better quickly

Sam Huff
I don't usually think so much about who's announcing or commenting on the game. But Huff has become, to me, the worst color commentator in all of sports. It's painful to listen to him. "Big game today for Reed Doughty. Where was he last week?" Really?
If JC plays like that against any decent team in the NFL and its 21-0 at halftime and JC's a$$ is so tight he cant function. That said, it wasnt 21-0 at halftime and he was able to hit a couple big TD passes to win and that's all that counts.

re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

Agree with most of your assessment, but you can live with 3 interceptions? 4 total turnovers by JC, I cant live with that nor can most coaches. Im sure if one would have been returned for a pick-6 you would be stating something different here, so why be ok with the opportunity you give a bad team, on the road, showing more effort than the home team? Yes JC made plays, BIG plays threw the air and with his feet and I do like the fact he was let loose to do so, but all the Blache and D haters should be kissing his a$$ this morning because they won the game. Im not hating on JC, but that was not one of his better performances. Throwing into double coverage twice with both being picked showed poor judgement and very Romo-like, he needs to quit that dumb sh*t.

Well, what I said is I'll take it for now because it shows that he's finally trying to make plays. But of course I'm not going to like that week in and week out

Re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

Nice, but here's my issues:

Campbell- Does he look like he's commanding/leading anything or does it look like he's muddling through every play hoping something works?

Kelly/Thomas- Are they sidelined during games? I would sit Moss, ARE, and Cooley for one game and force Campbell to look at these other receivers. It does not good if he's too afraid to go to them and when he does he over throws them, under throws them, or leads them out of bounds. Make Campbell get used to them and use them.

Rogers- I like INT also but as long as he's keeping the WR from getting the ball is good enough. As long as he mans up and plays close to the line vs. giving his typical 15 yrd cushion.

Yoder- He's still on this team? Where's Davis? Yoder should only be used in case of injury. Play Davis more....he was a 2nd round pick for gods sake.

H.Smith- Too funny what you wrote but we are only a few games removed from the "Nether Region King" himself.....Sean Springs. ;)

I'm with you and I think that he's the least of our problems. If it's me, I'm giving him a 2-4 year extension, and work on building the lines.

People can talk about Zorn, talk about Campbell all they want, but then after that they want us to draft linemen. We can't have it both ways. If we end up drafting another QB (most likely a first round pick) then the cycle just begins again.

I want a highly touted OL with our first pick in the draft this year. I don't care what anyone wants to say, Campbell is a slightly above average QB and I'll take that any day of the week until our line has improved.

Yeah... I'd rather us really sell out on the line and keep JC around. At the end of the day no one can really argue we're where we're at because of him. He can QB an NFL team effectively...but not without at least decent protection. It's time to build some foundation.

Kyle Orton threw an AWFUL pass to Brandon Marshall that should have been picked off, however Marshall adjusted, caught the ball, and ran it for a TD (very sweet play against the Cowpukes). While I'm not going to defend JC on his picks, I do wish our tall receivers could use their height to go and get the ball.

I was 100% certain after yesterday's game, that all the same people that blasted Campbell for not taking chances were going to use this game as a chance to blast him for throwing interceptions. I'm not at all happy with the picks, but Campbell did something that all the haters said he couldn't do, which was make the plays to win the game. He overcame a terrible first half and battled back.

A three interception game by Jason Campbell is an anomaly, and not at all the norm. If I have to read three pages of crap today about how bad he is because of one poor outing, I'm going to punch my monitor.

JC will never take this team anywhere even with a good line but your last point is 100% correct, no QB can be great behind this O line.

Yeah seriously Yoder. That could have cost us the game. I can't believe any pro would let someone come in unblocked like that.

Terrible stuff by him.

Re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

^I'm not a hater of JC, I just think you either have an excellent QB with simply good talent around him like the Patriots or you have a simply good QB with excellent talent around him like Pittsburg. I think we are in the later, but we don't have excellent O-line players and our skilled positions need a lot of work.

I still say our failure to get any production out of Thomas and Kelly is due to our lack of NFL quality WR coaching. Hixon must go. These guys are 2nd rounders and some slated them to go in the 1st round.

Davis needs better training or he needs to step up.

Whatever run blocking scheme were using teams are clogging it.

Why aren't we spreading out defenses? again the O-line gets in bunch formation, I presume to create a nice pocket for JC, but when we try running plays the defense can keep all the runs between the tackles better and clog the lanes. Which is why the Giants, and Dallas are running the ball better then us. Can someone tell coach Zorn that Alridge is on the team?

Re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

JC..I was watching a little bit of Balt NE and this guy Flacco is already better than JC. He just looks more comfortable out there, looks more like a polished NFL QB in his 2nd year. Just an observation. But glad to see JC bring us back and play a nice 2nd half.

Kelly....Where is Marko Mitchell? I'm tired of both Kelly and Thomas.

Rogers...His job is to cover the other teams WR, not catch the ball. So as bad as he is at catching the ball, let's all remember he's a DB, not a wr.

Sadly, this may happen. Marko got in the game some v. the rams as I recall. I didn't see him yesterday or in Detroit.

Kelly just cannot get separation, yet JC continues to go to him. I know he's tall & JC is trying to get him in the game by making a play in tight coverage, but it seems the guy is never open.

Thomas' routes look very lazy, at least on the few occassions where they replayed the coverage. I don't have good feelings about the guy developing. I'm afraid we still have the problem we've had for a few years, lack of a #2 wr playmaker.

Yeah -- I wonder if there's anybody here who still thinks these guys need more time, that we're expecting too much from second year receivers.

Shouldn't we be seeing something by now?

Huff is my man! He always played like he wanted to win, and I love to hear him and Sonny as color commentators. They've got their hearts into the game because they really care about the Redskins. If only some of the players would play with their hearts in games. I'd like to see Marko get into some games because all he did during the preseason was make great plays.

Re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

I hear the frustration about Kelly and Thomas. I'm am with Thomas especially cause he supposedly worked out with JC over the summer. What I wonder is how much of their not doing so well is Hixon's fault. I know some have the attitude that they are professionals and should already know the little things like getting seperation, route running, hand placement and so on but I also keep hearing how some colleges don't go into those kinds of things.

Secondly how much of it is Hixon saying "you will run the route like this or you will sit on the bench." No different then what Zorn said in regards to changing certain plays at the line of scrimmage? These WR's were supposed to be the elite of their class taken in the 2nd round and yet we have trouble getting the ball to them. Thomas looks slow on some routes. Heck just give Thomas go routes either toward the seam or up the sideline. That alone would utilize his speed and pull a couple of defenders out of the zone.

Also put Thomas on KR/PR if they are not going to use him elswhere. We need his speed. You can teach when to field a ball and when not to but you can't teach exceptional speed.

Re: Smoot lays the Smackdown (Redskins vs. Bucs)

We are bad on offense (in case you haven't noticed). Our receivers and o-line are useless. We only have TWO plays that get us positive yardage:

1. Campbell running for his life, scrambles for an 8 yard gain.

2. Campbell running for his life, finds Cooley downfield.

Don't take my word for it. We are 2-2 and playing an 0-3 team this week. Yet we are 5.5 point underdogs. We can spin it anyway we want but Vegas says we suck, and Vegas knows best.

I completely agree -- Thomas and Kelly have not shown a nose for the ball or that they can do a lot with it after the catch. I would give Marko Mitchell a shot and see what happens. At this point, what do you have to lose? I was also surprised we weren't throwing to ARE is the slot -- when you don't have great protection, a quick slant should produce 4-5 yards, which seemed to be the amount we needed on most of our 3rd downs, coincidentally.

that's really out of nowhere! By "standard mid-week workout" do you mean that throughout the season this is done quite often?

I am still disappointed that Betts doesn't get any carries. Has he lost a step or do they just want to get CP in a groove? Betts has got to have as much or more burst than CP at this point.

I was a big Betts supporter and thought the Skins should have platooned him and Portis instead of giving Portis 342 carries last year. But I have to admit, he doesn't look good right now... not that Portis looks all that great either. But even the few times Betts has gotten the ball in space, he hasn't looked good trying to elude tacklers. As bad as the O is, no one is beyond being benched, with the exception of Moss and Cooley.
