I'm surprised it wasn't shannahan

Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Really interesting move. He's been out of the league for a while but he's a proven offensive coordinator. I mean I'm not jumping to any conclusion here...but he was Holmgren's OC in Green Bay.

MS isnt ready to get off the couch for less than HC and maybe more. This can't hurt, Zorn is in WAY over his head, and needs all the help he can get. And if I'm a betting man Zorn has 12 games left in DC...best case. Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Wow. I remember Lewis back in the 90's as one of the top black assistant coaches in the NFL and he never got a head job. He worked under Holmgrem if I'm correct. I don't know who was behind this but who ever it is I want to say THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

This is so weird cause I was watching NFL Network yesterday or the day before and Lewis was coaching under Mariucci. Anyway he was coaching up Charles Rogers and Lewis was on the video. And I was just thinking, "what ever happened to that guy?" |

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have hired longtime NFL assistant coach Sherman Lewis as an offensive consultant. Lewis, a 22-year NFL coaching veteran, brings a history of success and a vast knowledge of the West Coast Offense, in addition to four Super Bowl rings. “Sherm Lewis is an outstanding coach who has been an instrumental member of four Super Bowl championship teams,” Redskins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato said. “Sherm’s history started with the innovator of the West Coast Offense, Bill Walsh, and over the past two decades he has directed some of the best offenses, and coached and developed some of the league’s premier players. He has a diverse NFL background, having coached running backs, wide receivers, and serving as a coordinator. Jim and Sherman share a common bond in that they both worked for Mike Holmgren at different times in their careers. Sherman’s overall experience and expertise will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff. His track record humbles us all.” |

He might end up being Zorn's replacement..lol. Oops did I say that. this make sme think we might bring Holmgren in also. Because FO doesn't want to blow up the team. They dont believe in rebuilding. They know us as fans heads will explode. lol |

yeah, Sherman Lewis is one of the reasons we have the Rooney Rule. He's no spring chicken so he's probably not a long term answer. Supposedly, and I don't have confirmation right now, this was Vinny's call. So ,again not to speculate, but it's hard not to think this isn't Holmgren scouting the roster via his buddy Sherman Lewis so the off-season changes (or non-changes) move smoothly. |

Yeah in the long run it may make a difference. Reminds me of, ummm, Bill Arnsparger. |

Yup, if I remember right Joe Bugel also was brought in as a consultant in 2003 |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
is holmgren getting his staff ready for next year? possibly keep zorn for qb coach?
|
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
well he may have been out of football a while be his resume is better than the head coaches and the oc so I'm glad he's here. if holmgren was behind it then so be it.

You guys act like Holmgren is sitting up an DS office.

maybe we will all be guessing untill the last game of the season (maybe sooner if we dont improve) |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Ok now I'm maybe being a conspiracy theorist, but why specify a "history with Holmgren"
“It’s not a threat at all,” Cerrato said. “Jim welcomed the idea if it was the right guy. So we came up with a list of people that had a background in the West Coast offense and a history with Holmgren. Nobody’s job on offense changes. Jim still calls the plays.” Cerrato: Lewis 'Another Set of Eyes' For Zorn Interesting note about the experience coaching receivers. He can replace Smith and Hixon at once! |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Get Hixon out of here.
I'm all for it. |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Not a good sign if your boss tells you he is bringing in a consultant to see why you suck.

Good point. They didn't want to give Art Shell a chance at one point either. Eventhough they let him go after a year. But he was one of those who broke the glass ceiling so to speak.Let's not go to the college ranks where in all the hundreds of colleges in Division 1. There are only like 3 african american head coaches. Sad. Luckily pereceptions have changed in the NFL now with Dungy, Tomlin & Lovie Smith. |

LOL. Sig worthy |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Biggest issue everyone noted to an in-season firing of Zorn, he's the HC, playcaller and QB coach. Well, now you can promote Blache to HC, make Lewis the play caller and Meidt the QB coach. Zorn gets fired after the Philly game. I'm just saying.
Lewis was OC for Holmgren, but also coached with Shanny in SF. Hope he's got a solid calling plan because his minutes are going to be increasing. |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Haven't looked at the thread, please let it be Holmgren please let it be Holmgren. Now let me go see what we have wrought!
Edit: Ok, very interesting, just like this team to make that one move which can get your hopes sky high again! Yea I am easy, so what about it ;) |

Let's be honest, if JZ can do any self evaluation, and team evaluation, he already knows the offense sucks. |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
2 words THANK YOU!!

Thanks for that....can't stop laughing now! I don't think there is a better way to describe it! |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
I'm good with this! It may be the best compromise for replacing JZ during the season. I'm am all about having a proven OC in the house. And if the Conspir....ists are correct and the groundwork is being layed for Homgren....so be it. It should lead to a smoother transition
|
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
Very good time for this. Let him come in, see how the team practices and plays against some basic competition, and then start making recommendations either before Philly, or over the bye week. I think if JZ takes it the right way, this could be a move that gets him, and therefore, the team over the proverbial hump.

Totally agree. This is a solid move. I am impressed. At the very least like you said we have the ground work laid for a smooth transition to Holmgren and to add to that someone with experience on the staff. GOOD MOVE!! But even saying that. What if we make Lewis our HC at the end of the season and move Zorn to Sherman Smith's position. Sherman Smith might get the boot instead of Zorn..lol. That might be too many Sherman's in the house..lol |

Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
The more I read the more giddy I get about this move.
Lewis began his NFL coaching career in San Francisco. As the 49ers’ running backs coach from 1983-88, Lewis tutored the likes of All-Pro Roger Craig and Tom Rathman. As a wide receivers coach from 1989-91, Lewis helped his pupils, Jerry Rice and John Taylor, mesh with Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana to form one of the most potent passing combinations in NFL history. The 49ers won three Super Bowls during Lewis’ time in San Francisco. |
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
I like this move. The positive in me hopes that this is a sign that Snyder is showing patience, and the team is finding a way to get some things off Zorns plate.
And the pessimist in me hopes this lays the groundwork for a new coach. Regardless, I'm fine with this move if it improves our offense. |

Jason Reid said he asked Vinny if this move would have been made if Zorn was against it. His answer....no. If this is true, good for Zorn. Lewis has been involved in the WCO for years and having him see things from upstairs during games can only help. Hopefully he can do what Hixon can't, and teach the receivers how to get separation and how to play in the WCO. Hopefully he can also iron some things out in the redzone, like having Portis run straight ahead directly behind Sellers instead of stretching it out down the line. Remember, most of Zorns assistants are new to the WCO and Lewis knows it inside and out. I think this is a good addition. |

Almost like he has the opporunity to help. But also study the situation and see what needs to change if Zorn isn't kept as the HC. Probably would be a smoother transition than Holmgren. 3 might be a crowd (Smith, Zorn & Holmgren). |

At 67, I would be amazed if he wants to coach. I think that's more the wise counselor time of life (age bias I know) and so I think this could be a perfect fit. |

Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
The offense is going to be know as the Sherm and Sherm (Lewis and Smith) or Sherm˛.
|
Re: Redskins hire offensive consultant
I'm confused as to what exactly he is being brought in to do but whatever, can't hurt I suppose.
