Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

If we accept that the only player on our roster that's attractive enough for another team to give up a first and third round draft pick is Chris Cooley, would you trade him?

Assuming that we could use both first round picks for offensive linemen, along with regaining the third round pick we lost for Jarmon, I would probably be in favor of it. Doesn't mean I don't like Chris Cooley -- he is a world class tight end, no doubt. But if there isn't a quarterback who could be kept upright long enough to find him, what good is he?

I think we could all agree that O-line should be the priority. If this was the only way we could stockpile extra draft picks to rebuild the line, would you jump? What if this could be our 'Hershel Walker' trade?

If someone was dumb enough to offer us that, uh, HELL YEAH! In a heartbeat you make that trade.

Love Cooley, LOVE him, but I love the Redskins more and if they could improve for the long term you have to take that offer.

Yeah Pain is right aside from personal feelings about Cooley this would be a good move.

You'd be stupid to turn this down but it would depend on the cap hit.

It is. We've seen some of the elite teams trade away or let go some of their more popular players when it's in the best interest of their long term success. Moves that come to mind are Joey Porter in Pittsburgh and a bunch of guys for the Pats (Seymour this year). Can't let personal feelings get in the way of sound business moves. The team comes first. If we could get a 1 and 3 for Cooley, I'd say do it. Not sure we could though, and not all that confident the FO would make good with the picks. Tough call.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

Absolutely not. Then what, stuck with Fred Davis and Yoder?

You have to replace him with something. He's not only our Pro-Bowl TE, but a premier WR.

To bad we don't have something in Davis of worth so we could send him packing. It appears that #2 pick is a useless tit.

How do you know if Fred Davis is any good or not? You can't judge him by the limited playing time he has received. With 2 first rounders, a second, and a third. You could fix our Oline and some other needs pretty quickly.

Pretty simple. I've been watching him the last year and a half!

During Gibbs 1.0, there wasn't a pass receiving tight end on the level of Cooley. Those offenses did okay. While guys like Cooley are nice to have, they aren't necessarily a must for prolific offenses.

I guess it would depend on what type of offense you bring in. If we go with another coach who's a West Coast guy, you'd have to find a capable replacement. But again, going with the premise of the original question, if you're on your way to building a solid offensive line that can give your QB plenty of time, and pave the way for bruising running game, it wouldn't be that hard to find a tight end that could get the job done.

As weŽd draft only receivers anyway... NO.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

If the Skins could definitely get a 1st and 3rd for Cooley, I would pull the trigger without hesitation. I like the guy, but getting two nice picks for him outweighs my desire to keep him on the team.

No one will offer that, and any team approached by the skins with that deal would laugh Vinny off the phone.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

Yes. We're not close. A draft with 2 first rounders and 2 3rd rounders could overhaul our o-line and get us a RB. With Davis in the fold I think Cooley is expendable given your parameters.

I would do it, but I have to ask myself, who do I have on the roster who could come close to matching his production? We don't know yet what kind of player Davis is going to be. Traditionally, TE's do not fetch 1st rounders in a trade but it would be nice work if we could get it.

SouperMeister 10-17-2009 03:28 PM

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

Fred Davis still thinks he's playing against PAC 10 defenders with less athletic ability. Is there ever a play where he has the ball that he doesn't try to juke or hurdle the defender, who often is just as fast and athletic? At least with Cooley, he runs great routes, but after the catch, he puts his head down and bulls his way for an extra 3-5 yards. The premise of this thread also assumes that the Skins would draft starting caliber players with a 1st and a 3rd, which looks highly doubtful when you just look at the disastrous 2nd round of 2008 when Vinny whiffed on Thomas, Kelly, AND Davis. Just. Say. No.

Yes and no.

Yes if had people that would actually draft based on need, not man crushes. So no.

Our roster is going to be so overhauled this offseason it's not going to matter whether Cooley is on our team or not.

Since it's such a blocking role this year who knows. You have to take that trade it seems, would hate to see the guy go though.

That's what I thought about Chris Samuels but now we all have to deal with losing him.

Of course you take that trade. The fact that no team would ever actually offer that shows that we would be getting a great deal.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?

then if we were to pull the trigger on that deal and our 2 first round picks and the 3rd turn out to be complete busts (which would probably happen with our luck recently)
You would hear all over that the FO was stupid for even thinking of trading Cooley.. So I wouldn't do this. cant compare him to Gonzalez yet. he hasnt been in the league that long.

That would be good move, I believe.. I would also try to dangle either Doughty or Horton, just to see what they are worth and if it is worth to trade one of them..

Like I said in other thread, no way would I trade Cooley.. He's our only reliable weapon, without him - our offense would only go worse.. Beside we haven't really seen what Fred Davis could do.. He's good at blocking but obviously JC don't have any bond with him, like he did with Cooley..

Were this offer on the table you would pull the trigger in a minute. But the Raiders already have a decent tight end so I don't think Cooley is going anywhere.
