PS3 Slim

I picked this up a couple weeks ago when I got my new 1080p TV, I wanted a Blu Ray player and the the guy talked me into the PS3, really didn't take much arm twisting. =)

I am very impressed with it and I have only played one game on it, LittleBigPlanet. the Playstation store is nice for getting the latest HD movies for rent and I purchased PlayOn a service that allows me to watch Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, CNN, CBS, Amazon On Demand, and some other stuff through the PS3 to the TV.

My only let downs are no front display (think DVD player "clock") and it will not resume movies when you just stop the movie you have to bookmark your spot.

I also bought the DVD remote for it which works really well.

Overall very good buy for $299.

how much is the PlayOn service for PS3? Thinking about getting one for the family for Christmas

$40 one time shot but Netflix is coming to PS3 shortly. So if you want it for Netflix I would not bother but the CNN, Hulu, ESPN, and CBS are nice to have as well.

This is a relatively new feature to me. I got a DVD player about a year ago, and was surprised when it did this -- even after I changed discs. I'm not sure how big the memory is, but it will resume every DVD I have from the last place it stopped. Pretty cool, but it can sometimes be annoying.

I've been thinking about getting a PS3 for a while now, but I'm not a big movie buff, and I still play original XBOX. :)

Re: PS3 Slim

Yeah I bought the 160 gb PS3 back in Feb. and I'm very happy with it. I've played a bunch of games on it so far and there are very few I wasn't satisfied with. I'm hooked on online as well, the only thing I haven't been playing online is Madden yet because I'm still relatively new to playing Madden on my PS3 and I'm not as good as I once was. The dvd stopping thing must be a feature not included on the $299 one because I can stop dvd's on mine and it'll go back to where I stopped it at. The online browsing thing is a nice feature as well but I don't use it because I have internet on my computer already. Overall though I'm satisfied with it, and I've bought a couple Blu Rays to watch on my new HDTV and I'm loving the picture quality and sound so far.

I was wondering why HULU stopped working on my PS3! They must have done that a few months ago because back in June I was able to watch Hulu without any upgrades.

Peep the PS3MediaServer:

PS3 Media Server

This is app is ridiculous... it will transcode video on your computer's hard drive, straight through to your hi-def via PS3. I even use wireless, so no cords. Totally free and when you've got x264 rips, it's totally sick.

I've got the Netflix app on my PS3. I've had it a couple of months now.

Also have Playon for the PS3 as well. Love it, except the picture quality isn't THAT great.

I swear my PS3 always resumes without bookmarking. It's not a PS3 Slim but they should have the same OS.

I "broke down" and got the PS3 and Move bundle as my gift to myself. "Yay me" :). Now I have to try and be good and not play it till Christmas. I'm really not thinking I will make it all the way there.

I don't have a HD TV tho, so, I don't know what to expect from the video. I assume it will still work, I just won't get the full awesomeness of it. True?

Bro you got to splash on a HDTV. What kind of TV connection cables does the Slim come with? Probably an HDMI cable so the question is does your TV have HDMI connectivity and can you connect your PS3 to it without HDMI input? Blu-ray videos are worthless unless you have an HDTV.

Encourage JoeRedskins to get you an HDTV for x-mass, that's what brothers do for each other.

I am assuming you bought a slim which requires you to use a HDMI cable to hook it up to your TV. Most non-HD/SD TV's if not all don't have HDMI hook up. You might be SOL.

it said it has av out. Well guess that gives me a reason to open the box!! :)

edit: other web pages say that it comes with a HDMI to Composite connector - which is what I thought the box said.

The AV out is for digital audio if say you want to run the picture to your TV but the audio to your audio receiver. I am 99.9% sure you can only get video to your TV from the PS3 Slim through HDMI.

Plus talk about feeding jet fuel to a Pinto.

You can still keep it but you would need to use something like this to make it work.

Walmart.com: Mad Catz 6' Universal S/AV Cable: Accessories

I literally shutter thinking about using something like that!

Yeah, I know, but I am fine with the Pinto for now, but I wanted some of the jetfuel fun.

Maybe we can all chip in and get him one and then we can all chip in and get me a new car. I think that would be the coolest thing that has ever been done in an online forum.

Wow, sorry I just got back to this question after a year.

Anyway, you just open PS3Media server on your computer and turn on your PS3. The PS3 will detect the app automatically (assuming you've got the network connection set up correctly in the PS3's settings).

Go to "Video" and you'll see the PMS application- it basically reads all the video files directly from your computer's hard drive (you can tell the app where to look on the computer if you've got your movies under one root folder).

Can't comment specifically on how to get content... just google "usenet" and "11/month astraweb special." Trust me, you'll save tons of money in the long run and your movies/tv shows/apps are boundless... not to mention safe behind ssl.

Well now I don't feel as bad. I got home looked at my tv again and it is in fact high definition. From 2003 and no hdmi interface but it has component in so maybe its not quite a Pinto :-)

Wrong. They come standard with the av cables like the PS3's always have, with hdmi and component being an optional purchase. To get the full bang for your buck on both the graphics and audio it's pretty much a required secondary purchase though.

I am quite happy to report that yes, in fact the PS3 worked fine on my TV, with the in the box cables. I will get some component cables later, but the composite they provided were ok. Watched Star Trek through Netflix, and the picture was good for me. Also, the Move controller is pretty cool, but I haven't played the Wii or Kinect, so I have no comparison. I only did some of the Ping Pong, and beach volleyball, but both responded great to the realistic motions. No doubt that if you have the PS3, you would want the Move controller at some point.

FYI, if you have cable tv you can get component cables from your cable company for free...well, with Comcast you can.
