How to stop smoking?
Yeah, since I'll not have the Redskins to piss me off this weekend, I think this will be a good time to quit.
I've quit twice before: Once in boot camp, and the second time when I lived in Cali. What's the best way to quit when everyone's blowing smoke in your face? I'm not hip to the patch, but I'm not closed to it either. What Sayeth the Mob? |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I quit 11 years ago. No magic formula, I just quit cold turkey, suffered through the first 2 weeks and was a real ass to be around, but I got through it. If you really want it you can do it. It's all about will power.
C'mon Trample make a play! |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I quit smoking by avoiding the bars for a few weeks. Then as fate would have it, I started chewing tobacco as my crowd of friends were into that. I quit both now by just saying no.

One morning I got up to have my morning cig, and it made me sick. Literally. I stopped right then and didn't touch another cigarette for a long time. Nowadays if I'm out drinking I'll have an occasional smoke, but I never smoke at home. Plus it helps that my finacee says her biggest turnoff is guys who smoke. I'd say I probably have 4 or 5 cigs a month. I'm not too worried about that health-wise, but I told her when we get married in June I'll totally drop it. Why is everyone blowing smoke in your face? Do you work in a bar or something? |

Do any of your people have any desire to quit? Maybe a team effort would help as far as supporting each other. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I know of a few people who used Chantix and have not picked a cigarette up since.
|
Re: How to stop smoking?
I got sick with the flu when I was about 20, and couldn't even stand to be around cigarettes. When I recovered, I decided not to continue. That only lasted for 5 years, and I am smoking again. So, for me, getting sick really helped me quit.
Drew is right ... I was filling out an application for personal health insurance and of course it asked if I was a smoker. At the time I wasn't, but it said if you have smoked within the past 10 years, then you are classified as an "Ex-Smoker". So, the choices were: Smoker, Ex-Smoker and Non-Smoker. |

I'll probably have to move away from them. |

Chantix works. I stopped for about a 1 1/2 months using Chantix and when I went on a guys week golfing started back (yea I'm a dumb ass). I have some now and I'm going to quit after the football season. I really don't smoke much durn the week unless I'm drinking and my biggest hurddle is on the weekends when I enjoy a few adult drinks. Last time I quit I also quit drinking for a few weeks to help with the urge. I'm not one of those people who plan their life around smoking and most of the restaurants we go to are smoke free which does not bother me. I actually perfer going to a smoke free restaurant when going out for a nice dinner. |

Re: How to stop smoking?
I smoked about a pack a day for 8 years. Thats was 12 years ago when I quit. IMO, quit cold turkey, don't get anything that makes you think it's going to be easier. If you think it's going to be easy you've lost. Pick a day in advance and go for it.
I substituted exercise. When you are exercising you most likely don't want to smoke. You don't have to avoid bars, alcohol, etc b/c you are eventually going to be put in that situation at some point and you are going to have to say no. Might as well say no now. It's hard but after a few weeks everyday will get a little easier and easier. I'll never smoke again but still occasionally feel the urge. It's fleeting though. |

Not suicide attempt or anything crazy, but was very very nausea, couldnt sleep sometimes, and would have hypervelated breathing attacks...it was kinda scary and consulted a doctor. They said it wasnt anything physical and pointed to the Chantix. I had a friend in Florida have similar issue with Chantix as well. Been trying to quit for a couple years and have really cut back. I may have a pack a month but I do compensate by smoking black and milds to get me through a weekend. I can go a couple days without smoking...but having a drink I find it impossible to not to smoke |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I quit partying years ago and I quit drinking about two years ago. Smoking is my last bad habit.

Who says drinking is a bad habit , hell , I drink beer and Im almost 200 years old :) . I never smoked , but my father did , he went to a " quit smoking " event . They made my father and a few others sit in a non-ventilated room all smoking one cig. after another until they hated the smell or got sick . Very crude method , smoke till you get sick ... then you lose the urge ..... good luck !! |
Re: How to stop smoking?
Break the habits that you did when you smoked. Nicotine addiction is over with after a week of no smokes. The habits are what you have to get away from, triggers as we call them in the medical field. Avoid anyone who smokes for at least a month or so if you can, give yourself time to set some better habits in place. If you do have to be around a bunch of heavy smokers chew lots of gum, drink lots of water and walk around a lot. Good luck! You can do it.

Re: How to stop smoking?
Easier said than done I know, but just stop. It's nasty, it's gross, and it's going to kill you. Lung cancer isn't a pretty way to go. Alright, off my soap box.

Re: How to stop smoking?
You have gotten good advice.
I quit using the patch...it works. It makes it....bearable. After three weeks, I quit the patch. Never looked back. HOWEVER, I still enjoy the smell of someone else burnin' one. I smoked two packs a day and quit 12 years ago. You will feel significantly better IMMEDIATELY. Break the old habits, coffee, booze, daily use of prostitutes, etc Good Luck! |

Those were some nasty pictures Saden, but effective. I haven't smoked today and I had only two yesterday. When I was in the service, I only smoke one a day. The difference between then and now is about 6-3 miles every other day. With that said, I think I'm going to start jogging across the Manchester Bridge on my lunch break. My people bought two boxes of patches. If they want to use them then that's cool. I can't stand drugs. My smoke buddies is going nuts, poor bastard. He's trying to quit too. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
I want to quit smoking too. I smoked at least a few cigarettes a day almost every day since i was 17.
The thing is, i can still run just fine. Two nights ago i ran 3 miles as part of my training and i felt just fine. I wish i could just stop, but i have night-time anxiety and for some reason i want to smoke before i try and lay down to sleep.... |

Re: How to stop smoking?
I broke down on Saturday and had about 5 cigarettes. On Sunday I didn't have any, nor have I had any today. The smokes I did have on Saturday tasted awful. I usually go through two packs on the weekend.
That effing patch itches like a mother. I remember now why I don't like them. The last time I quit I was on a bus in the Northern Bay area. I forget what stop it was, but they let all the convicts from San Quentin out there when they've done their bids. Well the first thing they do is fire up smokes when they get out. On the bus they smelled of cigarettes and it made me sick. When I get back to that point again, I know I'll have made it. |
Re: How to stop smoking?
It's ok to fall off the wagon, just get right back on it.
You know it's funny, most of the time when I smell a cigarette I'm like wow that's gross. But once in a while I'll catch a whiff and it's the best thing ever and the craving comes back, but it's easy to squash at this point. You'll get there, take it day by day. |

Ok. I know I should quit but I don't think I'm ready. Is that bad?

Re: How to stop smoking?
I never really even started. Like, I've smoked plenty of cigarettes, but by never purchasing a pack myself, I've never have developed even the most minor desire to have one.
Completely different from quitting, I realize. |
