CB Play
We all know Smoot is a good CB but does anyone in here think he can handle someone Like TO or Moss? Who would you guys put on TO? Smoot or Springs? Or would you zone them to death? Or double cover them with safety help?
|
You gotta put springs on them. Smoot may be the better overall cornerback, but Springs is alot more physical in coverage. I dont know though, Smoot has bene pretty agressive latley too. My nod would be Springs.
|
Springs definately has to cover TO (he's far stronger than Smoot), but I'd double him with safety help.
|
anyone remember who covered toomer in week 2? hes prolly the best reciever we have faced
|
Heck put Taylor on him and let Taylor knock out TO!
|
Taylor is probabbly a little inexperienced to cover TO. In other words, he would probably get worked. Now Smoot with help from Taylor would do the job. Our LBs can cover Westbrook and their TE's and Springs is solid one on one with their other WR.
Plus, I would love to see the smack flying! |
Whoever is on guys like Moss and Owens will need a ton of help no doubt.
|
You have to double team Moss. Not a bad idea for Owens, too.
|
Right now, you have to kneecap Moss to cover him. Of course it depends how serious his hamstring is.
|
You have to double either of them just like any other team in the league does
|
I'd put Springs on Owens. When Springs was in Seattle, he had to see Owens twice a year in San Francisco.
|
yeah unfortunately some people only think of Springs as the guy who got burned by TO in the famous sharpie celebration play
I'd put Springs on him as well though, he has the size to do it |
I would put Smoot on T.O with Sean Taylor punishing him if he catches the ball. Smoot has done an acceptional job at covering big WR's like Toomer and Keyshawn Johnson this year. I believe he is one of the best CB's in the league, so why not put him on the best. I told Smoot at the Fan Appreciation Day that, "this is your year." He replied, " you already know that." He wants to make it to the ProBowl.
|
In either case you would have to go with Springs. As some have already pointed out Smoot is smaller & these are two of the bigger recievers in the league. In moss's case you could make an arguement that Smoot would be more effective because he's quicker, but I think his height would be exploited. We've all seen the plays, culpepper throws it up for grabs & moss goes up to get it. In owens case it's clearer, Springs physicaly is the better matchup. With all the focus this year on the 5 yard rule I think the smaller corners in the league are at a disadvantage. And we all know that owens is the most physical receiver in the league. Owens along with moss, are also notorious for getting away with pushing off & I think Smoot would have trouble trying to be physical with owens without getting flaged. I also think Smoot matches up better against their 2nd receivers & I think he'd be able to shut them down one on one, allowing Springs to get most of the help in coverage. Bottom line is we have to contain them. They're going to get their receptions and we have to keep their yards after to a minimum.

who yet this season has been able to cover TO or Moss? i think u gotta double both those guys
|
That goes without saying. My point is that you have to make a choice, help or no help.
|
anyone remember who covered toomer in week 2? hes prolly the best reciever we have faced
Smoot covered Toomer and Keyshawn Johnson very well I might add. |

Before we give these guys too much credit, let's remember Dante Culpepper and Donovan McNabb rush alot of passes under pressure. With the Redskins defensive blitzes, it makes their job a lot more difficult. I still see Smoot on these WR's no matter how big they are because what Darrell Green was able to do for 20 seasons at 5"8, he passed on to Smoot and Bailey. Smoot is one the best solo tacklers on this team. He also doesn't make the mistake a lot of young CB"s make which is play the receiver rather than the ball. |

Talk about something you know about like boning your sister. |
wuz up with the personal attacks? im not attacking anyone yet most response to me are out of line, maybe it makes you feel like a big man?
lighten up gosh |
you should also remember the iggles and vikes both have great lines that protect the qbs very well
|

lighten up gosh
If you can discuss issues concerning the Redskins like a normal person then no problem, but if you play with fire............. |
so you suggest i have relations with my sister and yer the normal one?
yeah ok |
I think you have to go w/ Springs and double at times.
|
Attacking the Skins, for most of us, Is a personal attack.

Especially when he's not bold enough to name his team. I have an idea what team he's rooting for. |
I agree VT....there hasn't been anyone able to cover those two straight up man. Will need to double with a safety and punish him early, even if they don't touch the ball lay them out so they bring out the aligator arms!
|
They will most likely switch up. Some for Smoot and some for Springs. Either way Double them up with a Safety and mix in a few zones. The only one I have ever seen shut down Moss is, Darell Green. Everybody says Moss is unstoppable but Green shut him down, period. So it can be done. As far as Terrell containned preasure from blitzes on McNabb will sut that down.
|
I think the key will not be who covers the WR but how much pressure is on the QB. Moss was uneffective agianst the iggles when they played this year because the "phreak" was in Dante's ass the whole game.
If the opposit qb's on his back the reciever can't get the ball. when ever we play the eagles it's McNabbs legs that kills us not his arm. Hell I'd put Jimoh on either one if smoot or springs are open to blitz the qb and put him on his back. I hope we blitz more of a combination Taylor/ Arrington, with stunts getting griffin free to get the qb. Mark my words if we have any problem with either wr it will be from a sreen, reverse or trick play thats all. |
Smoot on Moss, Springs on Owens....speed for speed and size for size. Of course this probably won't be for EVERY play, considering Williams scheme. And of course, whoever is on them will have safety help.
But I agree with everyone who says the key is pressure on the QB. We play both of these teams late, so our defense should be even better by then. And HOPEFULLY, our (passing) offense will have their sh!t together by then! |
We haven't heard Mr. Springs name too much this year. That = good. Bailey was exactly the same way. He'd go the whole and get mentioned like 5 times during games sicne no team would throw at him. Nobody thinks Springs or Smoot are as good as Bailer but I think they are quality starters and within the scheme our secondary has BEEN better than it has in years. Wait until Taylor wakes up and starts playing like he did in pre-season. WRs be warned! Springs ahs been the better of the two simply since he doesn't get thrown at as much. But I could live if Smoot HAD to cover them.
